7. Procedure
A. Column Starter Preparation
1. Marking and Alignment:

Mark the column locations on the foundation or slab as per structural drawings.

Ensure alignment with grid lines using a theodolite or total station.

2. Shuttering for Column Starter:

Fix formwork to a height of 75mm to 100mm (starter height) from the base level.

Apply shutter oil to the formwork for easy removal.

Ensure the formwork is watertight to avoid leakage.

3. Concrete for Starter:

Use M20 grade concrete (or as specified).

Compact the starter using a needle vibrator.

Allow the starter to set for 24 hours before proceeding.

B. Reinforcement Work
1. Cutting and Bending:

Cut and bend bars as per the bar bending schedule (BBS).

Label and organize reinforcement for ease of placement.

2. Placing Reinforcement:

Place vertical bars as per design spacing and tie securely with binding wire.

Install lateral ties (stirrups) at the specified spacing:

Closer spacing near beam-column junctions (100mm to 150mm).

Wider spacing (150mm to 200mm) in the middle.

Ensure proper cover using cover blocks (40mm to 50mm for columns).

3. Quality Checks for Reinforcement:

Verify bar diameter, spacing, and lapping length (50 × bar diameter as per IS 456:2000).

Ensure lapping is staggered and not located in high-stress zones.

Check hooks on ties (135° hooks with 10-bar diameter tails).

C. Column Formwork Erection

1. Formwork Preparation:

Use cleaned and well-maintained formwork materials.

Apply shutter oil to prevent concrete adhesion.

2. Erection of Formwork:

Fix formwork panels tightly around the reinforcement to avoid gaps.

Use spacers to maintain alignment and dimensions.

Check verticality using a plumb bob or spirit level.

3. Stability of Formwork:

Secure the formwork with clamps, ties, and props.

Ensure sufficient bracing to resist lateral pressure during concreting.

4. Inspection:

Verify dimensions and alignment with structural drawings.

Check the formwork for tightness to prevent concrete leakage.

D. Concrete Casting
1. Concrete Placement:

Use a pump or manual placement method.

Pour concrete in layers of 300mm to 500mm thickness to avoid segregation.

Vibrate each layer thoroughly using a needle vibrator.

2. Compaction:

Ensure no honeycombing or voids in concrete.

Avoid over-vibration to prevent segregation.

3. Top Surface Finishing:

Finish the top surface with a trowel and ensure it is level.

4. Curing:

Allow concrete to cure for at least 7 days (use water sprinkling or wet gunny bags).

For high-strength concrete, curing may extend to 14 days.

Quality checks ensure conformance by verifying the compliance of materials and processes with standard codes and specifications. This includes checks on bar diameter, spacing, and lapping length per IS 456:2000 standards, ensuring formwork alignment and stability, and conducting tests like slump and cube tests to assess concrete quality . These mechanisms help detect and correct potential deviations from the design, ensuring the construction meets safety and performance standards .

Safety guidelines mitigate risks by ensuring all workers wear personal protective equipment, securing formwork and scaffolding to prevent accidents, and advising caution while operating machinery like concrete mixers and vibrators, thereby preventing injuries and ensuring a safer construction environment .

The inspection process ensures effective removal of formwork by verifying dimensions and alignment with structural drawings, checking formwork tightness to prevent concrete leakage, and confirming that shutter oil has been applied which facilitates smooth and damage-free formwork removal .

Using specific shutter oil in the formwork preparation is crucial as it prevents concrete from adhering to the formwork surfaces, enabling easy removal after setting and minimizing damage to the formwork and concrete surface .

The Quality Inspector enforces compliance by inspecting and certifying that the work complies with the applicable IS codes and project specifications, ensuring that all construction activities meet the set quality standards .

The critical steps in the concrete casting process include placing concrete in layers to prevent segregation, vibrating each layer to avoid voids, finishing the top surface with a trowel to ensure levelness, and curing the concrete for at least 7 to 14 days for strength development. Each step ensures the integral and structural strength of the concrete, preventing potential defects like honeycombing and ensuring the concrete achieves the desired physical and chemical properties .

The thumb rules for column construction, such as providing 40mm to 50mm cover to reinforcement as per IS 456:2000, using a lap length of 50 × bar diameter, spacing stirrups between 100mm and 200mm depending on their location, and ensuring proper development length of 40 × bar diameter, help in maintaining structural integrity by ensuring proper concrete coverage, appropriate reinforcement, and adequate anchorage which prevent corrosion, cracking, and structural failure .

Placement and spacing of reinforcement are ensured by cutting and bending bars according to the bar bending schedule, organizing them for easy placement, securing vertical bars with binding wire, and installing lateral ties at specified spacing, with closer ties near beam-column junctions and wider in the middle. Proper cover is ensured using cover blocks .

Necessary equipment for column construction includes bar bending machines for preparing reinforcement, measuring tools for ensuring proper dimensions, shuttering tools for erecting formwork, vibrators for compacting concrete, and mixers for preparing concrete, each playing a crucial role in ensuring precise construction with structural integrity .

The primary responsibilities of a Site Engineer during the column construction process include monitoring and verifying the work at every stage to ensure compliance with the SOP and structural drawings .
