Introduction
In the modern retail environment, retailers must deal with increased competition both
domestically and globally through both traditional and nontraditional channels.
Changes in customer expectations about product assortments and service, regulatory
pressures for accurate data and business demands for “more for less” all drive efforts
to deliver improved business performance and customer service. As a result, retailers
look beyond their organizational boundaries to evaluate and integrate the resources
and capabilities of their suppliers and customers and thus create superior value and a
competitive advantage that they might sustain over time. Our discussions with retail
managers in various conference sessions have underscored these concerns; in
particular, managers name three major supply chain trends that appear to be
transforming the retail landscape: global sourcing practices, multichannel routes to
market, and relationship-based innovation. As a result of these trends, various
improvements are emerging in terms of brand image, reputation, sales and profits,
innovation, and relationships.
HamroBazar is one of Nepal’s leading online marketplace platforms, operating as a
classified site that enables buyers and sellers to engage in transactions for a wide
range of products and services, including electronics, automobiles, fashion, furniture,
and real estate. Over the past decade, HamroBazar has contributed significantly to
digital commerce and consumer-to-consumer (C2C) trading in Nepal. The platform
operates on a zero-commission model, making it a preferred choice for individual
sellers and small businesses looking for a cost-effective way to sell their goods online.
Since 2014, Nepal has witnessed a rapid transformation in its digital economy, largely
driven by increasing internet penetration, mobile banking adoption, and evolving
consumer behavior. As a result, platforms like HamroBazar have become essential in
bridging the gap between traditional retail and digital commerce, especially in a
market where many consumers still prefer physical interactions when making
purchases.
Despite its steady growth and increasing user base, HamroBazar faces several
challenges, including logistics inefficiencies, cybersecurity risks, lack of regulatory
clarity, and growing competition from global e-commerce platforms like Daraz,
Alibaba, and Amazon. These challenges, along with opportunities at global, national,
and local levels, will shape the future trajectory of the platform.
This report provides an extensive analysis of HamroBazar’s 10-year growth trend
(2014–2024), along with its challenges, opportunities, and long-term sustainability
prospects.
Growth Potential of HamroBazar (2014–2024)
HamroBazar’s growth is driven by various macroeconomic, technological, and
consumer behavior trends. To understand the platform’s potential, it is essential to
analyze its expansion at global, national, and local levels.
Global-Level Growth Potential
At the global level, the rise of e-commerce, fintech innovations, and cross-border
trade has influenced Nepal’s online marketplace. Even though HamroBazar operates
in a local market, its growth is linked to the global digital commerce ecosystem in the
following ways:
a) Influence of Global E-commerce Trends
The global e-commerce industry has grown at an average annual rate of 14%
since 2014, with major companies like Amazon, eBay, and Alibaba expanding
their operations globally (Statista, 2024).
The increasing adoption of AI-powered search, automated chatbots, and
recommendation algorithms has improved user engagement, encouraging
platforms like HamroBazar to integrate similar technologies.
b) Impact of Digital Payment Solutions
The introduction of global payment systems like PayPal, Stripe, and
cryptocurrency payments has allowed digital marketplaces to expand beyond
national boundaries.
However, Nepal’s foreign currency restrictions and limited payment gateway
access prevent local platforms like HamroBazar from scaling to an
international market.
c) Cross-Border Trade Opportunities
Nepalese small businesses can leverage global demand for handmade crafts,
garments, and artisanal products.
HamroBazar could potentially expand its export-oriented classified listings,
allowing local businesses to sell to international buyers.
National-Level Growth Potential
Nepal’s domestic economy has experienced significant digitalization, driven by
factors such as increasing smartphone penetration, digital payment expansion, and
evolving e-commerce regulations. HamroBazar’s national growth potential can be
analyzed through the following key factors:
a) Rising Internet and Smartphone Penetration
In 2014, Nepal’s internet penetration was only 30%, whereas in 2024, it has
surpassed 82% (Nepal Telecommunications Authority, 2024).
The increase in affordable 4G and fiber broadband services has improved
access to digital platforms, boosting online consumer activity.
b) Growth in Digital Payment Solutions
The adoption of digital wallets like eSewa, Khalti, and IME Pay has grown
from 10% in 2014 to over 75% in 2024, reducing dependency on cash-on-
delivery (COD) transactions.
The Nepal Rastra Bank’s support for QR-based transactions and mobile
banking has further strengthened the e-commerce payment ecosystem.
c) Expansion of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
Nepal’s retail and SME sector has embraced digital commerce, with more than
60% of small businesses using platforms like HamroBazar to sell their
products.
Government initiatives supporting digital entrepreneurship have encouraged
local businesses to adopt online platforms.
Local-Level Growth Potential
At the local level, HamroBazar’s classifieds-based model has been particularly
successful in urban and semi-urban markets, where consumers seek a cost-effective
and informal shopping experience.
a) Increasing Demand for Second-Hand Goods
The popularity of buying and selling used goods, particularly electronics,
automobiles, and furniture, has grown.
Younger consumers prefer affordable, second-hand products, contributing to
sustained engagement on the platform.
b) Growth in Real Estate and Rental Market
HamroBazar has seen a steady increase in property listings, especially for
rental apartments and land sales.
As Nepalese urbanization increases, the demand for online property
marketplaces is expected to rise.
Challenges Facing HamroBazar
Global-Level Challenges
Despite its success, HamroBazar faces multiple international challenges, including:
a) Competition from Global E-commerce Giants
Platforms like Daraz (owned by Alibaba) and Amazon are expanding into
Nepal, offering fast delivery, brand partnerships, and better logistics
infrastructure.
HamroBazar’s lack of direct product fulfillment services makes it less
competitive in structured e-commerce.
b) Cross-Border Payment Limitations
Nepal still lacks access to global payment systems like PayPal and Stripe,
restricting businesses from selling internationally.
Nepalese government restrictions on foreign currency exchange for e-
commerce transactions further limit growth potential.
National-Level Challenges
Regulatory Uncertainty: Nepal’s E-commerce Bill (2022) is still in its early
implementation phase, creating legal ambiguity for businesses.
Cybersecurity Risks: Cases of online fraud, fake listings, and identity theft
have increased, reducing consumer trust in digital platforms.
Lack of Product Authenticity: Unlike Daraz, which has a seller verification
system, HamroBazar relies on user-generated listings, leading to concerns
over fake products.
Local-Level Challenges
Logistics and Delivery Limitations: Nepal’s poor road infrastructure and high
transportation costs make delivery expensive.
Limited Consumer Trust: Many Nepalese consumers still prefer physical
transactions over online payments, slowing down e-commerce adoption.

Conclusion and Future Outlook
Retailers must revise their supply chain structures, strategies, and management
practices to adapt to the changing environment. We address three notable trends that
affect retail supply chains and practices today, as well as their impact on retailers’
brands, relationships, and innovations. The widespread shift to global sourcing can
have adverse effects on a retailer's brand image, especially as retailers shift to more
private-label brands.
The growth trajectory of HamroBazar over the past decade highlights its increasing
dominance in Nepal’s e-commerce landscape. With a 27-fold increase in revenue, a
surge in active users from 0.5 million to an estimated 13.5 million, and a steady rise in
digital payment adoption, the platform has capitalized on rising internet penetration,
smartphone usage, and evolving consumer preferences.
Despite this growth, challenges remain—including logistical inefficiencies, digital
payment constraints, regulatory uncertainties, and increasing competition from global
and regional e-commerce giants. However, with improved infrastructure, policy
support, and continued digital adoption, HamroBazar is poised for further expansion,
deeper market penetration, and enhanced technological integration in the coming
years.
Going forward, AI-driven personalization, improved logistics, cross-border e-
commerce, and enhanced trust mechanisms will be critical to sustaining
HamroBazar’s growth and shaping the future of Nepal’s digital marketplace. If these
factors align favorably, the platform could see exponential growth, potentially
crossing NPR 5 billion in revenue by 2030 while continuing to revolutionize Nepal’s
retail sector.
