A REVIEW OF THE GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS, ADAPTATION,
AND SUSTAINABLE MITIGATION MEASURES
Abstract
Climate change is a long-lasting change in the weather arrays across
tropics to polls. It is a global threat that has embarked on to put stress on various
sectors. This study is aimed to conceptually engineer how climate variability is
deteriorating the sustainability of diverse sectors worldwide. Specifically, the
agricultural sector’s vulnerability is a globally concerning scenario, as sufficient
production and food supplies are threatened due to irreversible weather
fluctuations. In turn, it is challenging the global feeding patterns, particularly in
countries with agriculture as an integral part of their economy and total
productivity. Climate change has also put the integrity and survival of many
species at stake due to shifts in optimum temperature ranges, thereby
accelerating biodiversity loss by progressively changing the ecosystem
structures. Climate variations increase the likelihood of particular food and
waterborne and vector-borne diseases, and a recent example is a coronavirus
pandemic. Climate change also accelerates the enigma of antimicrobial
resistance, another threat to human health due to the increasing incidence of
resistant pathogenic infections. Besides, the global tourism industry is
devastated as climate change impacts unfavorable tourism spots. The
methodology investigates hypothetical scenarios of climate variability and
attempts to describe the quality of evidence to facilitate readers’ careful, critical
engagement. Secondary data is used to identify sustainability issues such as
environmental, social, and economic viability. To better understand the problem,
gathered the information in this report from various media outlets, research
agencies, policy papers, newspapers, and other sources. This review is a
sectorial assessment of climate change mitigation and adaptation approaches
worldwide in the aforementioned sectors and the associated economic costs.
According to the findings, government involvement is necessary for the country’s
long-term development through strict accountability of resources and regulations
implemented in the past to generate cutting-edge climate policy. Therefore,
mitigating the impacts of climate change must be of the utmost importance, and
hence, this global threat requires global commitment to address its dreadful
implications to ensure global sustenance.

RESEARCH ON THE APPLICATION OF HETEROTROPHIC NITRIFICATION-
AEROBIC DENITRIFICATION BACTERIA IN MEMBRANE
BIOREACTOR (MBR)
Abstract
Inoculating heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacteria (HN-
AD) to enhance membrane bioreactor (MBR) efficiency may result in the loss of
functional bacteria. Therefore, this study compares the application results of
enhancing MBR with a self-designed biological amplifier coupled with HN-AD
against the performance of conventional MBR. After enhancement, the MBR
achieved a removal efficiency of 96.7% for NH 4+-N (100 mg/L) and 96.4% for COD
(400 mg/L) in synthetic wastewater. There was a 33% increase in TN (100 mg/L)
removal efficiency. The dominant bacteria in the MBR were Alcaligenes (48.4%)
and Thauera (15.2%). Additionally, the abundance of denitrification genes
(nirK, norB, nosZ) increased in the enhanced MBR, contributing to improved TN
removal efficiency. The use of a biological amplifier effectively solved the
problem of HN-AD loss in sewage treatment.

ADVANCING CANCER RESEARCH THROUGH ORGANOID TECHNOLOGY
Abstract
The complexity of tumors and the challenges associated with treatment often
stem from the limitations of existing models in accurately replicating authentic
tumors. Recently, organoid technology has emerged as an innovative platform
for tumor research. This bioengineering approach enables researchers to
simulate, in vitro, the interactions between tumors and their microenvironment,
thereby enhancing the intricate interplay between tumor cells and their
surroundings. Organoids also integrate multidimensional data, providing a novel
paradigm for understanding tumor development and progression while
facilitating precision therapy. Furthermore, advancements in imaging and genetic
editing techniques have significantly augmented the potential of organoids in
tumor research. This review explores the application of organoid technology for
more precise tumor simulations and its specific contributions to cancer research
advancements. Additionally, we discuss the challenges and evolving trends in
developing comprehensive tumor models utilizing organoid technology.

INCLUSION OF THE GENDER EQUALITY SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
GOAL IN ENGINEERING TEACHING AND RESEARCH
Abstract
This work explores how gender mainstreaming can be included in the
teaching and research of engineering, a framed discipline belonging to Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (known with the acronym STEM), an
area of knowledge known for having (especially in the Western countries) a low
proportion of female students. There is little research and manuals that address
gender-specific issues in this area of knowledge and how they could be
addressed. During the 2018/2019 academic year, a pilot project on gender
mainstreaming was carried out at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya –
BarcelonaTech (UPC) as part of these actions. For this purpose, 41 voluntary
teachers from 8 Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees of the UPC have been
recruited. Social and gender relevance of the subjects, inclusive methodology,
classroom management and assessment have been considered in this research.
One of the tools obtained from this study is a guide of recommendations to be
used by the teaching and research staff to introduce the changes that make
possible the effective incorporation of the gender equality Sustainable
Development Goal (SDG) in engineering teaching and research. The
recommendations proposed in this work derive from the research carried out for
this project. The work, therefore, paves the way for further insight into the
specific gender bias in engineering and is an essential tool for people involved in
teaching and research in the engineering field from a critical spirit.

MEANING(S) OF A STUDENT PERSPECTIVE IN MATHEMATICS
EDUCATION RESEARCH
Abstract
This systematic literature review explores meaning(s) of a student
perspective in mathematics education research by investigating the
internationalities of research texts that use a student perspective. The study
views research texts as being produced in and influenced by the context and the
discourses in which they are submerged. In exploring the meaning(s) of a
student perspective in mathematics education research, we draw on
Skovsmose’s intentionality interpretation of meaning. A total of 98 unique
research texts were explored, resulting in three meanings of student
perspectives in mathematics education research: ‘feelings, experiences, and
views’, ‘evaluating interventions’ and ‘validating effects.’ The results show that
student perspectives in mathematics education research predominantly
consisted of studies with the internationalities of evaluation and validation
having a “regular” student in mind. Perspectives from students with certain
characteristics, like underserved students and students in different performance
levels, are scarce. While the findings might not be surprising, this literature
review nonetheless calls for rethinking student perspectives in mathematics
education research to include research with students that recognize students’
diverse backgrounds. We end the article by suggesting a desire-based research
approach to seriously address students’ hopes, wishes, aspirations, and desires
in mathematics education research.

THE CONSTRUCT OF ATTITUDE IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION RESEARCH:
CURRENT TRENDS AND NEW RESEARCH CHALLENGES FROM
A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW
Abstract
The crucial role of attitude towards mathematics in the processes of
teaching and learning mathematics is now recognized by both school
practitioners and researchers in the field. However, “attitude” is a construct
borrowed by disciplines other than mathematics education, and it is still
conceptualized in various ways within the broad body of research about the role
of affect in the teaching and learning of mathematics. In this context, developing
a systematic literature review is particularly significant to characterise the recent
trends—through the critical description of studies, foci, and approaches—and to
guide future research by highlighting new possible research challenges in light of
the current state of the art. Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for
Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, this paper describes
the systematic literature analysis of 180 papers published between the
beginning of 2016 and the end of 2023, sourced from the Web of Science and
Elsevier’s Scopus databases. The review confirms the worldwide interest and
production about attitude towards mathematics, highlighting new remarkable
findings and interests, such as the critical discussion about the translation of
validated scales, as well as the persistence of some typical critical issues related
to the “quantitative domain” in methodologies and to the widespread absence of
precise definitions for attitude or of appropriate theoretical frameworks.

EFFECTIVE SUPERVISION FOR ENHANCING QUALITY OF DOCTORAL
RESEARCH IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
Abstract
This article reflects on effective supervision and possible guidance for
enhancing quality of doctoral research in the computer science and engineering
field. The aims of this study are (1) to understand supervision and the role of
supervisors in the quality of doctoral research, (2) to elaborate on effective
supervision in the computer science and engineering field and challenges in
effective supervision, and (3) to identify key indicators for evaluating effective
supervision with a view to improving the quality of doctoral research. After
studying various pieces of literature and conducting interviews with experienced
supervisors and doctoral students, the article concludes by describing important
characteristics in effective supervision. Some of the features for effective
supervision are common to other areas of research; however, in computer
science and engineering and similar fields, it is important that a supervisor takes
the role of a team member by giving proper advice on the reports, algorithm and
mathematical modeling developed in the research, and demonstrating the ability
to provide advice on complex problems with practical approaches.
