Effects of Eggshells vs. LEF on Soil Fertility

The study examines the effectiveness of crushed eggshells and liquid egg fertilizer (LEF) as organic fertilizers to enhance soil fertility and plant growth, specifically using lettuce as a test species. Preliminary results indicate that LEF provides immediate benefits to plant growth due to its direct bioavailability, while crushed eggshells improve soil structure over time. This research contributes to the understanding of recycling eggshell waste into sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract
The need for sustainable agricultural practices has created a
market for organic fertilizers that enhance soil fertility and
reduce waste. Eggshells consist mostly of calcium carbonate
(CaCO₃), which can be used as a source of nutrient; crushed
eggshells act as a soil conditioner and can be used as a slow-
release fertilizer while AWF has a more direct and immediate
effect. On the other hand, eggshells have been used as a source
of calcium. Calcium in eggshells acts as a soil conditioner and
improves soil pH levels therefore enhancing soil fertility. LEF
on the other hand increases soil fertility quickly.
This study will help assess how effective each of the two
applications focusing on shell along with lettuce, the resistant
plant species. Using a randomized block design, we tried the
following factors: (1) bare soil, (2) soil with eggshells, (3) soil
sprayed so LEF. From the preliminary results, there is a
significant increase in fertility and plant growth with LEF use
obviously owing to more direct bioavailability. Jawed eggshells
on the contrary do not immediately change bioavailability and
hence do not disturb the growth rapidly but eventually slowly
improve soil structure. Therefore, this study adds to the
knowledge on the recycling of wastes eggshells into organic
fertilizers further suggesting that while LEF may fasten growth,
CA in crushed eggshells ameliorate soil structure in the long
term.
