Title: Student-Friendly Natural Hand Sanitizer Using
Lemongrass, Calamansi, and Neem Extracts.

Introduction
Background of the study

Hand Sanitizer is a well-known antiseptic. It is known for its

capability to kill bacteria. The most common ingredient in
hand sanitizers is benzalkonium. This effectual ingredient has
a broad spectrum of anti-microbial properties against
bacteria, fungi, and other viruses. With the natural
properties of local plant extracts, our natural hand sanitizer
will be created to be effective while taking into
consideration those who have sensitive skin—forming a chemical
that may kill bacteria—using the natural qualities of local
plant extracts. The focus of the idea is to provide users with
skin-friendly sanitizer that will easily eliminate bacteria
while also considering the use of fewer chemicals.

Statement of the Problem

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of hand

sanitizers has become a daily necessity. However, the
widespread use of chemical-based hand sanitizers has raised
concerns about their potential side effects, such as skin
irritation and long-term health risks (Erdemir et al., 2017).
Moreover, the environmental impact of synthetic ingredients
and plastic packaging adds to the urgency of finding eco-
friendly alternatives. There is a growing demand for natural
hand sanitizers that are safe, affordable, and environmentally
friendly, especially among students who seek convenient and
sustainable hygiene products. Despite the increasing awareness
of natural alternatives, there is a knowledge gap in
developing effective formulations using locally available
plant extracts that can be easily produced by students.
This study aims to fill this gap by exploring plant-based
ingredients with antimicrobial properties that are readily
accessible in the Philippines. The research will focus on
creating a natural hand sanitizer that is easy to make,
effective against common bacteria, and safe for daily use by
students. By addressing these issues, the study will
contribute to promoting health and environmental
sustainability in schools and communities.

Hypothesis

H2: The plants mentioned will not provide significant

antibacterial properties, and therefore, they will not lead to
a successful product
H2: The plants mentioned will provide abundant antibacterial
properties, leading to a successful product.

Significance of the Study

To develop a safe, effective, and eco-friendly hand sanitizer

formulation that is suitable for student use. The formulation
will focus on natural ingredients that minimize skin
irritation and reduce environmental impact.

Promote the adoption of natural hand sanitizer within schools

and communities as a healthier and more sustainable
alternative to chemical-based products.

Scope and limitations

This study primarily examines readily available household

plants to create gentle, skin-safe hand sanitizers that are
affordable, organic, and more sustainable for daily use. In
other words, it focuses on how to transform common plants into
sustainable and useful products for everyday human use. While
these plants have various applications, such as in gels, food,
and more, this project mainly concentrates on their
antibacterial properties.

Methodology:
Ingredient Preparatio
To create the hand sanitizer, the following ingredients will
be prepared:

Aloe Vera: The leaves will be sliced to extract the gel,

which serves as a natural moisturizer and antibacterial agent.
Calamansi: The fruit will be cut in half, with 1 teaspoon of
juice extracted, known for its antimicrobial effects and
refreshing scent.
Neem Oil or Extract: Five drops will be added for its
antibacterial and antifungal properties, further enhancing the
sanitizer's efficacy.

Through combining these natural ingredients, the study will

work towards developing a sustainable and effective hand
sanitizer suitable for student use while also being kind to
the environment.

This report outlines the objectives, significance, and

methodology for conducting research into creating a natural
hand sanitizer, utilizing local botanical resources, while
emphasizing safety and environmental sustainability. The final
product aims to be user-friendly and accessible for students,
promoting healthier hygiene practices.

Common questions

The study acknowledges limitations such as the variability in the antibacterial effectiveness of different plant extracts and the potential issues with the scalability of the formulation. Addressing these limitations could involve conducting further research to optimize extraction processes, standardize formulations, and perform extensive testing to ensure consistent antimicrobial efficacy across different conditions and bacterial strains .

The project aims to be student-friendly by focusing on creating a hand sanitizer that is gentle on the skin, easy to produce, and affordable. It uses simple, natural ingredients that minimize irritation and harm, aligning with the needs of students who are often required to sanitize their hands multiple times a day . The ease of preparation and accessibility of the ingredients make the product convenient for student use, promoting regular and continued hygiene practices .

The study can contribute to promoting environmental sustainability by encouraging the use of natural hand sanitizers that are made from sustainable and eco-friendly ingredients, reducing reliance on chemical-laden products. By demonstrating the efficacy and feasibility of these alternatives, the study can inspire schools and communities to adopt more sustainable hygiene practices, thereby reducing the environmental impact associated with plastic packaging and chemical runoff .

The main focus of the study is to develop a natural hand sanitizer using locally available plant extracts, such as lemongrass, Aloe vera, calamansi, and neem, that is effective, safe for students, and environmentally friendly. This research is significant because it aims to provide a healthy alternative to conventional chemical-based hand sanitizers, which often cause skin irritation and pose environmental risks due to synthetic ingredients and plastic packaging .

The potential benefits of using local plant extracts include promoting sustainable production practices by leveraging readily available resources, reducing costs, and supporting local agriculture and economy. These extracts, such as calamansi and neem, provide natural antibacterial properties, thus eliminating the need for synthetic chemicals. However, challenges may include ensuring consistent supply and quality of plant materials, potential limitations in efficacy against a broad spectrum of pathogens, and the scalability of production methods to meet demand .

The study addresses concerns associated with chemical-based hand sanitizers by proposing a formulation that uses plant-based ingredients known for their antimicrobial properties, such as Aloe vera, calamansi, and neem. These natural ingredients aim to minimize skin irritation and reduce environmental impact while maintaining effectiveness against bacteria . By using sustainable and local resources, the study also seeks to mitigate the ecological footprint linked with synthetic additives and non-degradable packaging .

Plant-based ingredients play a crucial role in mitigating safety concerns due to their natural origin, which reduces the likelihood of skin irritation and adverse health effects compared to synthetic chemicals often found in hand sanitizers. Ingredients like Aloe vera, calamansi, and neem have intrinsic antibacterial properties, which contribute to the effectiveness of the sanitizer without introducing harsh chemicals, aligning with the safety needs of frequent users such as students .

The methodology ensures the hand sanitizer is effective and environmentally sustainable by utilizing natural, locally available ingredients like Aloe vera, calamansi, and neem, which have recognized antibacterial and antimicrobial properties . The use of plant-based extracts reduces reliance on chemical additives, thereby minimizing environmental impact. Additionally, the local sourcing of ingredients supports sustainability by decreasing the carbon footprint associated with transportation and packaging .

The study proposes two conflicting hypotheses regarding the antibacterial properties of the plant ingredients: H2 suggests that the plants will not provide significant antibacterial properties, while H2 suggests that the plants will offer abundant antibacterial properties, leading to a successful hand sanitizer product .

Developing a hand sanitizer suitable for students is important because students are frequent users of these products, particularly in school environments where hygiene is crucial. A product tailored for students would ideally be gentle on their skin to prevent irritation, affordable for regular use, and sensitive to environmental concerns, which resonate with the increasing awareness among young people regarding sustainability .
