Participant 1 1. Can you describe your overall experience with group assignments?
- To me, I can say that my overall experience with group assignment is
good because working as a group provides me many opportunities to
improve myself. I can improve my communication skill and my Benefits of
problem-solving skill and working as a group also provide the groupwork
opportunity for me to learn from my group members as well.
2. How would you define fairness in the context of group work?
- To me, in the context of group work, I would say that fairness refers
to when all members in the group are treated equally and have equal Participant’s
perception on
right and opportunity to contribute, share idea, involve in decision
fairness
making, share responsibility and benefit from the group success
equally.
3. How does your group divide the assignment when you start working on it?
- When my group and I start working on the assignment or the new
The process of
assignment, we usually read and try to understand the guideline or the dividing the group
instruction of the assignment first then we start to list down the point work
that we have to completed and then we assign the task and share
responsibility with each other in the group, and lastly we set the
deadline for each task to make sure that everything will be completed
on time.
4. What process do you typically follow to divide tasks among group Group work’s
members? divided methods
- Mostly when it comes to divide the tasks or share the responsibility in
group, my group usually use the spin wheel to assign the responsibility for
each member or sometimes the leader of my group design the task or
responsibility for me and other members.
5. How do you ensure that everyone agrees on the division of tasks?
- Based on my experiences working with many different groups, to ensure
that everyone agree on the division of the task, I think firstly we should have
a meeting where all members in the group can share their idea and references
about the task and then we should make adjustment meaning that if someone
in the group is not happy with their task they should openly talk with group
members to find the solution and to make change until everyone in the group
feel good about their roles.
6. What factors do you think contribute to a sense of fairness in group
assignments?
- I think the factor that contribute to a sense of fairness in group assignment is
that: the first factor is getting an equal opportunity which mean that all
members should have equal opportunity and right toshare or contribute their
ideas or skills and the next factor is to respect other member’s ideas. Even
though, some idea that other member in the group provided are not good
enough, we should respect and value their idea as well because by doing this I
believe it will enhance the overall fairness of group assignment.
7. Have you ever felt that the distribution of work was unfair? If so, what
made you feel that way?
- Right now, I’m studying at two university so I have worked with many
different groups, and I can say yes, I have felt that the distribution of group
work was unfair sometimes. The things that make me feel that way is the
unequal workload, sometimes, I got a bit difficult tasks to do than other
members in the group.
8. Can you share an experience where you felt that some group members did
not contribute equally? What happened?
- Back then when I was in year 1 at another university, my lecturer assigned
us to work as a group for debate. At that time, there were four members in my
group; we received a topic for debate and then we assign and share the
responsibility and the tasks with each other but there was one member who is
not much active with the group until the debate day is becoming she has not
sent her part to the group yet and at that time this was a big concern for other
members in the group and this problem was solved by my group leader, so my
group leader responded and helped doing the part that she has not finished
andalso help her to write a script for debate as well.
[Link] challenges do students encounter regarding unequal participation and
contributions within group assignments?
- The challenges that students will encounter regarding the unequal
participation and contribution in group assignment include
these. The first challenge is the unequal workload distribution
when one or two members in the group do not equally
participate or contribute to work in the group, some other
members in the group may have more work to complete or to
do. Another challenge is having a conflict within the group
when there is unequal participation or contribution there will be
more work for others to do which lead them to feel stress and
have conflict among group members and can also slow down the
progress of the group as well.
10. How do you address situations where one or more members are not
participating as expected?
- From my perspective, I think there are three main solutions to deal or
address the situation when one or more members are not participating as
expected, so for the first solution is to communicate openly which mean that
we should encourage everyone in the group to share their ideas, thought or
feeling about the group, and we should ask if they are they facing any
challenges or difficulties that can affect their participation for the group. And
for the second solution is to set the clear role. When we start dividing the task
for each member in the group, we should establish clear role and
responsibility and also set the clear deadline for each member as well. And
for the last solution I think is to motivate team members by motivating,
encouraging and supporting each other to achieve the goal together.
Participant 2
1. Can you describe your overall experience with group assignments?
- Talking about my experience, working with group assignment is
not really easy to me because I also face with challenges and
easiness working on it as you have known already, we have
many different subjects with different groups, so working with
group, I also face with challenges and easiness. For challenges, I
feel like it was about the corporation with us sometimes since
my team and I didn’t spend time checking on each member’s
work which led the overall of our assignment look not very well
and for the easiness is that when group members try to spend
time checking each member’s answer and corporate very well
by tryingto suggest, advice and help each other find the answer
too.
2. How would you define fairness in the context of group work?
- In the context of group work, I think that fairness is about the
division that we try to divide task for each member in order to
make sure that all of our team members agree with the division
that we try to separate and work on it.
3. How does your group divide the assignment when you start working
on it?
- To divide part of our assignment, we sometimes use the spin and
sometimes we try to ask each member to choose by themselves,
and sometimes we try to divide the task base on our ability and
free time because some of our members are not available every
time, so they are more likely to do the part that spend less time
and easier than others.
4. What process do you typically follow to divide tasks among group
members?
- In order to divide the tasks among my group members, firstly, I
always try to discuss a little bit more about the assignment in order
to find the easiness or the challenges of our assignment and try to
ask each other opinion in order to get more idea, then we try to
divide the works and work on them. This can help avoid the
unfairness of division in group assignment.
5. How do you ensure that everyone agrees on the division of tasks?
- In order to ensure that everyone in my group agree on the division
of tasks, after divide the part we also try to ask each member
whether they agree or not. If they don’t, we can try to discuss or
suggest something and find the easiness to working on it
because not all of them and all the times, but sometimes after
they see the division of the tasks, they might disagree with their
responsible part so we might need to redivide the tasks
sometimes.
6. What factors do you think contribute to a sense of fairness in group
assignments?
- To me I think there are two factors to contribute a sense of
fairness in group assignment. The first is about the
understanding of each other and the second one is related the
corporationbecause whenever we have these two factors we will
work on the assignment really well although it is not very easy
but it can facilitate our assignment as well.
7. Have you ever felt that the distribution of work was unfair? If so,
what made you feel that way?
- Honestly, I have never felt that way of the unfair distribution of
work in the group because base on my experiences of working
in group assignment, I can say that it was really fair in dividing
parts, working on it, and completing our assignment fairly.
8. Can you share an experience where you felt that some group
members did not contribute equally? What happened?
- To me honestly, I felt that some group members did not contribute
in the group equally base on the deadline that our leader try to
put in order to collect the data or the work. Let say whenever we
got the assignment to work on, we also got the deadline from the
lecturer. However, in our team, our team leader always put the
deadline within the group member tooand one case is that some
members of our team didn’t complete the task on time by
sayingthat they do not have enough time to complete due to
their work, or the busy of their jobs.
9. What challenges do students encounter regarding unequal
participation and contributions within group assignments?
- To me, I think there are three challenges that students might
encounter regarding the unequal participation and contribution
within group assignment. The first one is up how time
management, the second one is about the conflict between team
members in the group, and the last one is about the low quality
of the overall work of the assignment.
10. How do you address situations where one or more members are not
participating as expected?
- For this question I think it a bit complicated to answer and find
the solutions, but when one or some group members in my team
are not participated as expected or they have lack of time to
complete the work, other members and I try to suggest and help
finding the answer or source of the question and answer on the
Participant 3 part that they are taking the responsibility on which can help
them easily access to the answer or complete the tasks; although
but it is not 100% perfect but it can help or carry our whole team
to succeed in completing our assignment together.
1. Can you describe your overall experience with group assignments?
Since I was in year 1, I have never had the problems with the group
assignments since everyone respect each other and contribute equally to the
assignment.
2. How would you define fairness in the context of group work?
Fairness refers to the perception that all members are included and they can
contribute fairly. At the same time, everyone should feel great, and nobody
should be left behind.
[Link] does your group divide the assignment when you start working on
it?
When we first get the assignment, we need to have a meeting, physically or
online to discuss for the agreement to divide the parts for every group
members to be responsible for.
4. What process do you typically follow to divide tasks among group
members?
Have a meeting online or physically then decide to divide the part for every
members. Also noted that, one need to be aware of the level of the difficulties
of the parts being assigned in order to be more fair.
5. How do you ensure that everyone agrees on the division of tasks?
We have to randomly select by using the wheel to spin randomly. Then
discuss if everyone agrees to be responsible for the part they got. We have to
agree together in order to proceed.
6. What factors do you think contribute to a sense of fairness in group
assignments?
Collaboration and agreement. When we all agree, then it is fair. It’s not
always about the amount of work being assigned. It’s also about if everyone
agrees and feel happy about it or not.
7. Have you ever felt that the distribution of work was unfair? If so, what
made you feel that way?
Personally, I would say no. But I think if one just sits in the meeting and have
no chance to say or express their feelings regarding the assignment, this one is
unfair.
8. Can you share an experience where you felt that some group members
did not contribute equally? What happened?
At that time, there was a member of my group who didn’t pay attention to the
groups and work. He didn’t pay attention to the quality of the work at all. He
did get the work done, but the quality is unacceptable so I feel uncomfortable
with it.
[Link] challenges do students encounter regarding unequal
participation and contributions within group assignments?
The challenge that the students encounter is that the students who have done
the work well are going to feel depressed since if his or her members doesn’t
get the work done, then their overall score will be affected at all. And
everyone will feel so bad about it. And later on, he or she won’t wanna work
with that person anymore.
10. How do you address situations where one or more members are not
participating as expected?
The thing that I can do is that I will host a meeting and discuss with everyone.
We have to ask the one who doesn’t contribute to the assignment for the
reasons why he or she can’t contribute to the assignment. And we will decide
if he or she should continue doing the work or should we call for the
volunteer to be responsible for that part. Regardless of what, we have to get
Participant 4
the part done. We cannot actually do anything to that person. The important
thing is that we should know before the deadline of the assignment so we can
get the work done.
1. Can you describe your overall experience with group assignments?
I tend to experience a mixed blessing. Some groups are random so we may
encounter some group members whose working style and work ethics are
ambiguous to us. I also encounter some free-riders who neglect the
responsibility and accountability of their tasks. So it leads to under the
deadline of the assignment or the worse is the downturn of the assignment as
a whole.
2. How would you define fairness in the context of group work?
In my definition, fairness is the perception of group work referring to the
equality, responsibility, and accountability of the group members toward their
tasks or their assigned tasks by their group leader. They need to pull their legs
to contribute to the output both quantity and quality of the assignment as a
whole.
3. How does your group divide the assignment when you start working
on it?
Mostly, the tasks allocation is the responsibility of the group leader. So the
group leader will divide the tasks. After that, each member will be asked to
select their preferred tasks democratically or the rule of first come first serve.
4. What process do you typically follow to divide tasks among group
members?
It depends on the group environment. If I am familiar with the group
members, we don’t do much of the process. The group leader will just divide
the tasks drop them in the telegram group, and let the members select their
parts accordingly. As for the new group each memberhasn’t encountered each
other before, it might require a formal process like a formal meeting for the
tasks allocation. It can be through online meeting through google meets,
google classroom so that each members can share their views or their
opinions on the tasks distribution.
5. How do you ensure that everyone agrees on the division of tasks?
The leader would seek the opinions from the group members to see if the
tasks allocation is acceptable. If there is one oppose opinion, then the group
leader would reassign it. This is based on the principle of consensus.
6. What factors do you think contribute to a sense of fairness in group
assignments?
It lies in the responsibility. Because when you are responsible for the task,
you put effort into delivering the quantified and qualified outputs. Another
one is the Accountability. It means that we are accountable for the outcome of
our tasks. Meaning that if the output is not up to standard o the desired result,
then the one who responsible for that task will make change and adjustment in
order to get right on trend.
7. Have you ever felt that the distribution of work was unfair? If so, what
made you feel that way?
Sometimes because in a group, it is bound to meet some challenges. I a group,
there is a mix of people. Some are smart and able to responsible for many
tasks with a good quality while some might not do the tasks well or not do at
all. So the task allocation will be decided based on that factor as well. The one
who is perceived as qualified and smart may receive more work to do than
those who are considered not qualified enough.
8. Can you share an experience where you felt that some group members
did not contribute equally? What happened?
During my assignment last semester, I wouldn’t say they didn’t contribute at
all. They did contribute but they were careless with the output. They just got
the work done without considering the quality, so I had to redo it again.
9. What challenges do students encounter regarding unequal
participation and contributions within group assignments?
It will lead to putting more burdens on the other group members and also
might lead to severe consequences on the overall tasks or result or the score
because when one member doesn’tcontribute equally, then their parts will
need to be redone again. And as you know, not everyone has the time to redo
it again and again. So sometimes if we have no choice or no time to do it, we
submit unqualified tasks to avoid the overdue deadline, so the score of the
overall assignment will be lower than expected, or even can fail.
10. How do you address situations where one or more members are not
participating as expected?
I don’t have a solution to fix it, but I do have a way to avoid this kind of
scenario. I tend to have a sequential group meeting with all members to
determine the progress of their work to ensure that they all understand what
they are doing and ask for help if they have any concerns. This helps me to
ensure if any member neglects their responsibility. If this method doesn’t
work, I will have to complete the work by myself to submit the tasks because
I have no other choice since due to my nature, it’s hard for me to not put their
names on the assignments and just go on and submit it. I don’t entirely blame
my teammates because I want the work to be done according to the standard
defined by me so if the members' work doesn’t satisfy me, I will get their
Participant 5 work done or redo it again.
1. Can you describe your overall experience with group
assignments?
-So first, let me greeting and I'm currently a year 4 student at IFL University
in majoring in English teaching. Yes, thank you. To my own experience, I
have met different type of group project. Yes, I would say that mix of
experience I have encountered. On the positive side, I will say that group
work is much better than individual work because in a team, we can see our
work to each member so we could finish one by one to include together so it
will make the work [Link] we have different perspective, idea and we
can choose various of ideas into one into our project so we'll make our project
better if we only do individual work. But for another side, challenges will be
encountered in every group assignment or project. For example, first thing is
each member have their own busy schedule so somehow coordinating
schedule or uneven effort can be frustrating. I remember back in my year one
at another university that I study IR one of my members, she study and work
at the same time so her schedule is tight that she couldn't finish her
assignment part. So we are member, other member have to rush in and do her
work part in the last minutes to meet our deadline. So that one of my
experience I have encountered.
2. How would you define fairness in the context of group work?
-To me, regarding to fairness, means splitting up tasks in a way that take
everyone stream time and outside commitment into account. I mean fairness
in a group project is have to encounter and to mean only the hard work from
every member into one that can make the project better. Yes, and it about
everyone contributing their fair share. For example, in group project or
research paper if you feel based on someone is better than for some part in
another part, while other will handle document or testing depend on their own
skills to be fairness for each individual.
3. How does your group divide the assignment when you start
working on it?
-Since year one till year four studying, I would say that the only way to have
that been effective for a group assignment is we randomly selected by
spending wheel. So it would be fair for everyone so we couldn't know which
one is better on each part and another will be good for this part or something
else. So we would just be random and selected for each member to handle on
their own part. Yes, and for example can be a literature review or handle data
collection, we will be random selected for each member.
4. What process do you typically follow to divide tasks among
group members?
-First things first, we have to review all members in the group we have to
review the assignment to understand the structure, the concept that teacher
provided us to do our assignment or to be done. And then after we understand
well, we start to looking through our tasks in a textbook or do research
regarding to that to break into smaller task for example research, drafting or
editing. So that we can know how many point that we can break into smaller
task and write for our members. Moreover we would randomly selected by
spinning wheel for our member to handle each task or one more thing we can
assign role based on who best suited for each task for somehow that one task
is difficult for everyone in the member they couldn't do it alone or individual
but somehow another one they have experience with that so we could assign
that task for them because this is suitable for them the best. And finally is we
have to set the deadline before the actual deadline we have to set a deadline
for our group to have to do to drop our draft to have enough time to check our
work before submitted to teacher.
5. How do you ensure that everyone agrees on the division of tasks?
-When we work with various people in a group, there can be four to six
people in each group. We have to be open-minded and keep our
communication open for everyone to share their thoughts about our task.
After dividing the task, we check in to make sure everyone is okay with their
role and workload. Is it too much? Is it overwhelming for them? For example,
we divide for members to have their interview part where they have to do
both finding and discussions. We're trying to make sure the task is not
overwhelming for them, so we divide it between two to three [Link]
members must agree with what we have divided for each one.
6. What factors do you think contribute to a sense of fairness in group
assignments?
-This is similar to the previous question about fairness. It depends on a few
key things. First is clear communication. We need clear communication in the
group to have the correct task division so it won't be messy when they are
submitting their draft. Everyone needs to understand what they have to do on
their task. Tasks should be assigned based on people's understanding, and we
have to understand their challenges. Last but not least, everyone has to follow
through on their part to ensure each part follows the criteria that the lecturer
provided.
7. Have you ever felt that the distribution of work was unfair? If so, what
made you feel that way?
-Yes, I have encountered those experiences. When work was not fair for me or
another member in the group, there was one time when a group member didn't
do their share of the work, which left the rest scrambling to fill in the gaps.
That member was careless and didn't try their best to meet the criteria that
teacher provided for the assignment. It was frustrating because we all agreed
on the task split at the start but they didn't follow through. It was unfair
because it added extra pressure on the other members and affected the quality
of our final project.
8. Can you share an experience where you felt that some group members
did not contribute equally? What happened?
-Since this is similar to question 7, I'll be brief. I worked in a group project in
high school where one member kept missing deadlines because they had other
commitments or tasks to [Link] first, we tried working around it by
taking some of their tasks to avoid falling apart. When it kept happening, we
decided to have an open conversation to understand what was going
[Link], things didn't improve. We kept missing deadlines, and he
kept his part lagging behind schedule. He was also missing from class,
making it difficult to contact him when we had group problem
[Link] challenges do students encounter regarding unequal
participation and contributions within group assignments?
- I'll highlight a few common challenges. The first is communication issues
since people in a group have different perspectives on parts of the project.
They can disagree on the final version when they don't clearly understand the
structure they need to follow for their part before submission. Next is unequal
effort when some group members don't pull their weight. Some are careless
and just copy paste from the internet without providing clear information. The
next is conflict resolution, which can be tricky to address without causing
tension.
10. How do you address situations where one or more members are not
participating as expected?
- For the last question about addressing situations where members aren't
participating as expected: I rarely meet this experience, but I would approach
the person directly or ask the group leader to talk to them personally about
what's happening. For instance, in one project, a member wasn't completing
their tasks because they were struggling with time management or their
schedule, but we tried to adjust our schedule and support them to catch up
with the group. If problems continue, the group leader should bring it up with
the whole group, and if that doesn't work, involve the instructor to ensure
everyone stays accountable and solve the problem quickly.
That's all from me, thank you
