Post depositional changes(lithification and diageneiss)
• A lithification is a process that converts newly deposited sediment into a indurated rock.
• A Diagenesis refers to the reactions which take place within sediment between one
mineral and another or between one or several minerals.
• The reaction change take palace at the lower temperature and pressure.
• If temperature, pressure elevated metamorphism may be introduced.
• Diagenesis is in fact, the beginning of metamorphism ; it leads to the modification of the
textures and structures and mineral composition of the sediments.
• The chemical rearrangements and replacements that take place on the sea floor is termed
as halmyrolosis.
• The principal diagenetic processes are 1. Cementation 2. Diagenetic reorganization,
[Link] defferentiation and segregation 4. Diagenetic metasomatism 5. Intrastratal
solution and
6. Compaction.
• Cementation is the process of precipitation of mineral matle in the pores or void of a
clastic sediment, the end product of which is rock induration.
• Most common cementing materials are chalcedony.
Textures of cements
• Cement found as crystallographic continuity on the detrital grains producing interlocking
mosaic.
• As fringe- like deposit on the borders of the sand grains.
Paragenesis of Cementing Materials
• A definite order of precipitation of cement could be established.
• This order is quartz followed by calcite (qtz-calcite).
• If there are three cementing materials- quartz followed by dolomite, in turn followed by
calcite .eg (Quartz ------ Dolomite ------ Calcite)
• Four cementing materials, the three last named would be followed by [Link].
(Quartz-----
Dolomite ------ calcite ------ anhydrite)
