Design/Analysis Summary
Name: ___________________________________________
In class we talked about various types of independent design issues. These include the following:
Correlational vs. Experimental
What I want you to do is pick a topic that has a clear IV and DV that is specific to attitudes, aggression, or
prejudice. For instance, if I focused on prosocial behavior, I would pick the effect of prosocial music
exposure (IV) on helping behavior (DV). Then, I want you to find two articles – one correlational and one
experimental. The articles have to be empirical and have been published in the past 10 years.
What to turn in:
1. Indicate what the research topic was.
2. Summarize both articles in two separate paragraphs (5 sentences maximum per article). Don’t forget
to cite
Correlational study- This research article explores the relationship between violent video games and
aggression in adolescents. It investigates how normative beliefs about aggression mediate this
relationship, and how family environment moderates it. The study involved Chinese middle school
students who self-reported their exposure to violent video games, family environment, beliefs about
aggression, and aggressive behavior. The findings suggest that violent video game exposure is positively
correlated with adolescent aggression, and that normative beliefs about aggression play a mediating
role. Furthermore, a poor family environment strengthens the link between violent video game
exposure and aggression, while a positive family environment weakens this link.
Experimental study- This study looks at whether playing violent video games makes kids more aggressive
than just watching them. Children aged 10-13 were divided into groups: some played a violent game,
others watched someone else play it, and a third group played a non-violent game. Their aggression was
measured by how often their peers reported real-life incidents at school. The results showed that boys
who played the violent game were more aggressive than those who only watched, suggesting that
actively playing may have a stronger impact than just watching violent content. Interestingly, this
pattern didn’t appear for girls, pointing to the need for more research on gender differences and other
factors that might shape this connection.
3. Finally, write a summary paragraph in which you tell me: (a) which article was better (in your opinion)
to answer the primary research topic and why, (b) compare and contrast the results of the two studies –
do they both come to the same conclusions or not, and (c) what you think the next step would be
