CHAPTER I

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a set of technologies that enable computers to perform a

variety of advanced functions, including the ability to see, understand and translate spoken

and written language, analyze data, make recommendations, and more. Artificial intelligence

(AI) applications are software programs that use AI techniques to perform specific tasks.

These tasks can range from simple, repetitive tasks to complex, cognitive tasks that require

human-like intelligence. ChatGPT is OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot that answers questions

and prompts in any format you request. It can carry out a humanlike conversation or write

various content such as articles, social media posts, essays, emails and even code. ChatGPT,

released in November 2022, is just one form of generative AI. The generative AI tool can

answer questions and assist you with composing text, code, and much more. It’s currently

open to use for free.

Academic results refers to an overall academic achievement by students based on the

multiple assessments’ results such as quiz, test, assignment, attendance & participation and

final examination.. According to Brew, E.A., Nketiah, B. and Koranteng, R. (2021), It is

highly significant to note that a human being’s entire existence is commonly based on the

amount of knowledge he or she acquires, how much this knowledge is utilized in developing

himself, his country, and the world at large. This explains the reason underlying the need for

education. The basic thing that one gets from education is knowledge

7
Investigating how AI-driven tools and approaches affect learning outcomes and

student performance is the aim of the study. Aspects of AI applications in education,

including their advantages and disadvantages, will be examined in this paper. It will look at

case studies and actual data from various learning environments to comprehend how AI

applications affect students’ motivation, engagement, and general academic performance.

Through examining the subtleties of AI applications in education, this study seeks to

shed light on their efficacy and pinpoint domains in which they might be most usefully

implemented. It is anticipated that the results will aid in the creation of more potent teaching

methods that use AI technology to improve academic performance and student learning.

Due to the need to improve educational outcomes and technological improvements,

artificial intelligence (AI) incorporation into educational settings has grown in popularity.

Numerous tools and methods made possible by AI applications have the potential to

completely transform how teachers and students learn. The purpose of this study is to

investigate the effects of using AI applications on academic performance, with an emphasis

on student learning.

The requirement for individualized instruction, a variety of learning needs, and a lack

of resources are some of the issues that traditional educational approaches frequently

encounter. By offering individualized educational experiences, AI applications such as

intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive learning platforms, and automated grading tools have

8
the ability to address these issues. Still up for debate, though, is how well these technologies

work to enhance academic performance.

This research aims to fill this gap in the literature by exploring how AI application

affects student learning and academic results. By analyzing the current state of AI in

education and examining the various ways it is being used, this research will provide valuable

insights into the potential benefits and challenges of using AI to enhance student learning.

The findings of this research will be of importance to educators, policymakers, and

researchers interested in the use of AI in education.
