Activity 2.8: Research Design

RESEARCH DESIGN
This part of the research paper talks about the research design that you have chosen, either quantitative,
qualitative, mixed methods, or action research. Furthermore, you describe the method you will use in gathering
your data as well as what tool you will use, either an interview, survey, etc. Provide the approach that you will be
using as well.

Example:
This descriptive study will use both quantitative and qualitative methods in gathering the data. In addition, it will
use the pretest-posttest design to determine the effect of oral corrective feedback on students' oral proficiency.
Furthermore, an individual semi-structured interview will be conducted at the end of the program.

Activity 2.9: Research Environment
RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT
This is where you discuss where you plan to conduct your study.

Example:
The study will be conducted in a public school in Sibonga, Cebu. Since the school is already implementing limited
face-to-face (F2F) interaction, discussions will be given during F2F interaction. The students will have one (1)
hour of face-to-face class per week for Oral Communication. The respondents will use Flipgrid to submit their
extemporaneous speaking performance and give online peer feedback.

Activity 2.10: Research Respondents

This is where you discuss and describe your planned respondents, include details about your
respondents.

The research respondents who will be the data sources will be 15 selected Taiwanese students. The students will
be adults with varying levels of oral proficiency and with different sex and gender.

Activity 2.11: Research Instrument
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
This is where you present and discuss the instruments that you will be using in your research. It could be
made by you or adopted from an existing study. If it is made by you, you need to test it for reliability and validity
and have it checked by experts. This is where you also discuss how the instrument will be scored or measured.

Example:
The instrument to be used is a research tool developed to measure perceptions on SHS curriculum
implementation (Dacanay, Panares & Cutamora, 2018). The instrument is a semantic differential appraising the
preparedness, comprehensibility, easiness, completeness, organization, excellence, sufficiency, systematization,
timeliness, simplicity, alignment, integration, precision and clarity of the curriculum in the lens of the students,
stakeholders (parents, industry partners), and education authority (teachers, school heads and supervisors). The
instrument has undergone content, construct, face validity tests and reliability test with Cronbach’s alpha .938
which index means that the instrument measures very consistent results.

Activity 2.12: Data Gathering Procedure
This part of your paper presents your plan on how to conduct your research. It starts with the permission,
actual conduct or data gathering, up to the analysis and interpretation

Example:
Before conducting the experiment concerning students, a letter asking for approval will be sent to the
school principal. After sending the approval letter, a parent’s consent will be sent to students aged below 18.
Once the letter of approval and parent’s consent are secured, Phase I will commence. Two (2) heterogeneously
grouped sections - Section A and Section B - will be the subjects of the experiment. Section A will be the control
group and Section B will be the experimental group. The 23-item Mathematics Anxiety Scale-UK (MAS-UK) will
be given to both of the groups to measure their math anxiety level before the intervention - this will serve as the
pretest. After collecting the data, the control group will have traditional instruction as medium of their learning,
while the experimental group will be exposed to game-based learning. After this process, the math anxiety of
both groups will be measured by the same scale again - this will serve as the posttest. When Phase I is done, Phase
II will follow. In this phase, the same sections will still be the subjects; however, these sections will have different
roles. Section A will be the experimental group and Section B will be the control group. The same process will be
conducted - pretest (MAS-UK), game-based learning on the experimental group and traditional instruction on
the control group, posttest (MAS-UK). When Phase I and Phase II is done, a focus group discussion will be
conducted to both grouped sections.
In the research process, data gathering is in two methods - quantitative and qualitative method.
Quantitative data are collected from the math anxiety levels among the learners. Qualitative data are collected
from the response and comments of students exposed to both traditional and game-based learning. Quantitative
data will be analyzed using t-test and qualitative data will undergo data saturation. Results and interpretation
will be discussed with the research adviser and presented to the panelists.

Activity 2.13: Data Management Plan
This is where you will discuss how you will collect your data, where to store it, who have access to the
information, discuss the consent forms, waivers, and privacy.

Example:
Letter will be sent to the school principal seeking approval to start the research process. In this letter, it
will be highlighted that this research will be beneficial in producing quality education as it is the core of the
Department of Education. Consent letters will be sent to the parents of students aged 18 below asking for their
approval in letting their children be involved in the process. It will be in a Bisaya dialect addressing the common
concerns of parents. Like the approval letter, the consent letter will also contain the benefits that the students
can gain in participating in the process.
Quantitative data are collected through Mathematics Anxiety Scale-UK (MAS-UK) and qualitative data are
collected through focus group discussion. These data will be analyzed by the researcher, and will be observed
with utmost confidentiality. Results will be shared exclusively to the research adviser and panelists.

Activity 2.14: Research Ethical Considerations
This is where you discuss the ethics you, as a researcher, must equip.

Example:
Honesty and Integrity
The collected data will be analyzed in raw form. These will not be altered or changed. Results coming
from these will be presented without fabrication or falsification.
Confidentiality
Data concerning students will be taken with utmost confidentiality. Personal information and
identification of students will be protected. Quantitative data - in the form of math anxiety level - and qualitative
data - gathered from the focus group discussion - will be kept in a locked cabinet. Digital data will be kept in an
electronic file requiring a password - only the researcher knows - to access. After data analysis, hard-copied data
will be shredded or burned, and digital data will be deleted.
