Understanding Electrical Substations

A substation is a critical component of an electrical network, connecting generation stations, transmission systems, receiving stations, distribution systems, and load centers. It consists of various electrical components like bus bars, circuit breakers, and transformers, and serves essential functions such as maintaining supply continuity and optimizing efficiency. Additionally, it regulates voltage and frequency variations to ensure stable power delivery.

What is Substation?

An Electrical Network is Comprises of Followings

1. Generation Station
2. Transmission system
3. Receiving Stations
4. Distribution systems
5. Load Centre( All these are interconnected through Substation)
Basically a Substation is an Assembly of
different electrical component such as

1. Bus Bar
2. Isolator
3. Circuit Breaker
4. Earth Switches
5. CT & PT
6. Surge / Lighting Arrestor
7. Transformer
Basic Functions:
1. Maintaining supply continuity
2. Minimizing fault duration
3. Optimizing efficiency of plant and Power System
4. Maintaining voltage variation within +/- 10 % and
frequency variation within +/- 3 %
