III CASE STUDY QUESTIONS
CASE STUDY 1
In your school’s Science laboratory, you have a cylindrical container filled with water. The
container has a height of 15 cm and a radius of 7 cm. Your teacher asks you to investigate
different properties of the cylinder, including its volume and surface [Link] on the
above information answer the following questions.
i)What is the volume of the cylindrical container?
ii) Calculate the total surface area of the cylinder.
iii) If the container were instead a cube with an edge length of 7 cm, what would its volume
be? Compare this with the volume of the cylinder you calculated in question (i). Which
container would hold more water and why?
iv) If the radius of the cylinder were reduced to half its original size (from 7 cm to 3.5 cm),
while keeping the height the same, how would the volume of the cylinder change?
Calculate the new volume and compare it to the original volume.
CASE STUDY 2
A housing society consisting of 5500 people needs 100 L of water per person per day. The
cylindrical supply tank is 7 m high and has a diameter 10 m.
i) What will be the volume of the tank?
ii) What will be the volume of the tank if the height is halved?
iii) How many cubic meters of water is required by society in one day .
iv) For how many days will the water in the tank last for
the society?
