Water Jet Force and Pelton Wheel Calculations

The document consists of two tutorial sheets containing various problems related to fluid mechanics and turbine design. It includes calculations for forces exerted by water jets on plates, work done by jets, and performance metrics for Pelton wheels, such as horsepower and efficiency. Each problem provides specific parameters and asks for various engineering calculations based on fluid dynamics principles.

Tutorial sheet no.

Q.1) Water is flowing through a pipe at the end of which a nozzle is fitted. The diameter of the nozzle is
10 cm and the head of water at the centre of nozzle is [Link] the force exerted by the jet of water
on a fixed vertical plate .The co-efficient of velocity is given as 0.95.

Q.2) A jet of water of diameter 5cm moving with a velocity of 40 m/sec,strikes a curved fixed
symmetrical plate at the centre. Find the force exerted by the jet of water in the direction of the jet,if
the jet is deflected through an angle of 120 degree at the outlet of the curved plate.

Q.3) A jet of water of diameter 10 cm strikes a flat plate normally with a velocity of 15 m/[Link] plate is
moving with a velocity of 6 m/sec in the direction of the jet and away from the [Link]:

i) the force exerted by the jet on the plane.

ii) work done by the jet on the plate per second.

Tutorial sheet no.2

Q.1) A pelton wheel has a mean bucket speed of 10 meters per second with a jet of water flowing at the
rate of 700 litres/sec under a head of 30 meters. The buckets deflects deflect the jet through an angle of
160 degree. Calculate the horse power and the efficiency of the [Link] co-efficient of velocity
as 0.98.

Q.2)A pelton wheel is to be designed for the following specifications:

Power=16,000 BHP;Head =380 metres;Speed=750 rpm;Overall efficiency=86%;jet diameter is not to

exceed one sixth of the wheel [Link]:

i)The wheel diameter,

ii)The number of jets required, and

iii)Diameter of the jet . Take Kv1=0.985 and Ku1=0.45.

Q.3) A pelton wheel is working under a groos head of [Link] water is supplied through penstock of
diameter 1m and length 4 km from reservoir to the pelton [Link] co-efficient of friction for the
penstock is given as [Link] jet of water of diameter 15 cm strikes the buckets of the wheel and gets
deflected through an angle of 165 [Link] relative velocity of water at outlet is reduced by 15% due
to friction between inside surface of the bucket and [Link] the velocity of the buckets is 0.45 times the
jet velocity at inlet and mechanical efficiency as 85% determine:

i)Horse power given to the runner

ii)shaft horse power

iii)Hydraulic efficiency and overall efficiency.
