APPLICATION
Applied for protection of all types of motor/turbine generators with or
r GEPIMAX-.1N and -3R without neutral, irrespective of the nature of the load.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Today a generator very often supplies highly non-
linear units as e.g.. thyristor controlled motors,
rectifiers, etc., causing hoavy distortions of
generator voltages as well as generator currents.
PHASE
CURRENTS
Furthermore the three phases may be asymmetrically
loaded - especially if neutral is applied^

be connected to a moving coil instrument cali-
brated in amps, giving a correct indication up to
500% overcurrent. This output furthermore controls
the contact function for overcurrent, "I>" (R3),
and possibly "I >" R 2 ) .
APPLICATION OF THE CONTACT FUNCTIONS
The GEPIMAX-.1 is provided with ."! time delayed contact functions, normally applied as follows:-
RELAY COUPLINGS: For tripping of the generator circuit breaker relay coupling H is
recommended (normally energised).
For tripping of non-essential load relay coupling A should be applied
(normally de-energised).
OPERATING TIMES: Each contact function is provided with a time delay circuit with
"inversely proportional release characteristic", in practice implying
that the operating time of the relays is decreased as the exceeding of
the relevant set point is increased.
The time factor for relays 2 and 3 may be increased 5 times, which is
especially of importance for marine plants. (See page 10)
ORDER SPECIFICATIONS: Relay couplings as well as time factors can be specified by order (see
pages 6 - 7 ) , however, the GEPIMAX is as STANDARD supplied with all three
relays in coupling H and with time factor "x 1". It is, though, possible
to change the relay couplings and the time factors later on by moving (
certain jumpers (see page 1 6 ) .
APPLICATION OF THE 2 OUTPUTS
INDICATION OF KW: A moving coil instrument (Rj lOkfi ) with mechanical zero at OkW can be
(Pout) connected to Pg^j. to indicate the generator load.
For calculation of the scale/meas. range of the instrument: See p. 5-7.
NOTE: Max. distance between GEPIMAX-1N/-:1R and instrument: 20 m.
LOAD SHARING: NOTE: ONLY types GEPIMAX-3NGS/-3RGS with galvanically separated outputs.
(Pout) If P„out is connected to the OEIF Diesel Generator Ccntroller, TRANSAL
type DGC-IT -29A-19A, this controller will "in conjunction with a fre-
quency converter type FC-5, common to all t'he generators, control the
pilot motor of the speed governor of the engine in question. This
implies that load sharing of generators running in parallel can be
carried out in isochronous, speed droop or constant power mode.
The generator(s) may furthermore run in parallel with the mains or with
a shaft generator in the following modes:-
- constant power
- base load
- topping-up
For detailed information about these modes: See Catalogue No. 8.3.
TRIPPING If both relay 2 and 3 are applied for tripping of the generator circuit
OF NON-ESSENTIAL LOAD breaker, a TRANSAL controller provided with one or two contact functions
< • (Pout/^out' can be connected to Ig^^Cas shown on page 15), or be connected to Pg^^.
if the power (kW) exceeds a preset limit.
APPLY: TRANSAL type DC-2T -13A(-13A), scale: 0-125X
input: 0-lOV (Ri: 10kJ}) for tripping at too high power (kW)
input: 0-2.5V (Ri: lOkfi) for tripping at too high current
AUTOMATIC START/STOP: A TRANSAL controller provided with two contact functions connected
(Pout/I out) either to PQ^J. or to Ig^^ is applicable for START/STOP of the next
STAND-BY generator. However, especially for more than two generators it
is highly recommended that the START/STOP function is determined by the
available power (see Catalogue No. 12.1).
APPLY: TRANSAL type DC-2T -23A-13A, scale: 0-125X
input: 0-lOV (R^: 10kJ2) at power control
input: 0-2.5V (Rj: lOkJJ) at current control
INDICATION OF CURRENT: A moving coil instrument (Ri^lOkfl ) connected to Ig^j. will indicate the
highest of the three phase currents even though only two external
current transformers are applied (see page 1 5 ) .
lout :• 0-lOV % 0-500%.
STANDARD calibration:
2V DC = 100%"^ CT ratio x position of current jumper.
TEST OF R2 AND R3: It may in practice during a load test be difficult to obtain suffi-
ciently high overcurrents to test the set points and the reaction times
of the contacts at the actual current level. High overcurrents can be
simulated by connecting a 0 to lOV DC power source to Ig^^ .
However, it may be necessary to change the function selector for R2
temporarily to position "I>" to carry out the test for R2 as well.
STANDARD CALIBRATION By meins of the built-in jumpers for voltage and current and the ratio
of tht- external instrument transformers the GEPIMAX can be adapted to
any si:<.' of generators, however, the set points of the GEPIMAX should
be ca'.cjlated aioording to the below table.

The -rated values refer to the calibration of the GEPIMAX, i.e. to the
secondary of the external instrument transformers.
C.T. RATIO: The selection of current transformers is not critical, however, in order
to obtain highest possible reading accuracy of the GEPIMAX, the kW meter
as well as of the ammeter, the following method of calculation is
recommended:-
The ratio should be selected to ensure that accurate read-out of kW as
well as current is possible at least 125% load at a power factor value
_^ [Link] an accurate reading of currents higher than the rated secondary
current (lA or 5A) is not possible for moving iron instruments, the
nearest rated primary current higher than 125% of Ip is selected.
125% of Ip = 436A X 125/100 = 545A
Nearest higher standard rated primary current is 600A. If a 600/5A CT is
selected, the secondary current will at Ip be: 436 x 5/600 = 3.63A.
CURRENT/POWER CALIBRATION: Nearest higher secondary current range is 4A, the corresponding second-
ary power range for 3 x 380V being 2000W. The calibration jumpers are
set to the "H" and the "4A" position respectively. On the primary side
of the current transformers this corresponds to:-
PjOo = 2kW X 600 240kW; PjQQ = 100% (on kW scales) and P 8V DC.
out
I 100 = '^A X 600 = 480A; IjoQ = 100^ (on Amp scales) and Igy^ = 2V DC.

(SPl - SP2 - SP3l When a set point is reached, the corresponding LED will be illuminated
(half intensity).
OPERATING TIMES: The operating time (T) is the period of time from exceeding of a set
(Tl - T2 - T3) point to transmission of the release signal to the (generator) circuit
breaker. T is determined by^.-
1) The setting on the T^, scale (T^.)
2) The exceeding of the set point (y%)
3) The time factor (TF)
After the time "T" the intensity of the LEO in question is increased to
full intensity and the relevant relay changes position.
The oprerating times can be calculated on the basis of the below formular
or be read from the curves, see pages 13 and 14.
NOTE: The calculations are based on a sudden change of the power and/or the
current, with the set point of the relevant relay function as 0%.
TIME FACTOR = 1: TF = 1 is applied for all typical generator plants, ensuring optimum
protection of the supervised machinery.
T Tcx or T,c = T x y i— a t'y _< y 'max

NOTE: Shortest achievable operating time for all 3 relay functions: Appr.I sec
IP^ME FACTOR = 5: TF = 5 is mainly applied for marine plants. For this type of plants it
is vital that the time suffices to start up and connect the next STAND-
BY generator to deload the overloaded generator in order to avoid a
black out. If Tc2 and T^T is set to 20 sees, 40 sees, can be obtained
for start up of the STAND-BY generator at a 2b% exceeding of SP2 and/or
SP3. At exeeedings greater than 25^, the operating time for R2 and R3 is
decreased by the square of y.

TESTING PROCEDURE
To ensure that the GEPIHAX-^ functions exactly as intended the below items should be checked before
the final functional test is carried out.

DIAGRAM: See page 15.
5) RELAY CONTACTS
CONNECTIONS: See page 16 - Fig. 4.
LOAD: See page 9.
8) TIME SETTINGS
% APPLICATION: See page 10.

TYPES -N AND -NGS: See label on top of the case.
TYPES -R AND -RGS: See label inside the front plate of the 19" rack module.
CHANGE OF TIME FACTORS: See page 16. fig 5.
AMENDMENT OF LABEL: Carried out by means of a speed marker.
NOTE: For tripping of the generator circuit breaker coupling H is recommended.
If TF = 5 is applied for R2 and/or (C. in connection with selective
short-circuit protection, relays in coupling H should release the gener-
ator circuit breaker through a time delayed (1 sec.) zero voltage relay.
This is to prevent immediate tripping of the generator circuit breaker
if the auxiliary supply of the GEPIHAX - normally the generator voltage
- should drop to a value less than 20% of Vp in case of short-circuit.
11
11) start up the generator or simulate the generator voltage.
12) When the three phase currents are zero, Pg^j. and 1^^^ should be zero as well, and at normal
setting of the set points none of the three LEOs should be illuminated.
13) Load the generator or simulate generator load on either the primary or the secondary side of the
external current transformers.
15) If Pgut is less than the calculated value or is negative, check the following items:-{See page 15)
a. Phase sequence (R S T)
b. Phase accordance between voltage and current circuits (VR - Ip, Vg - I5 , Vj - ly)
1^ Set points and operating times can be checked by applying the following methods:-
b. By simulating change of the power and current inputs (Compare with Fig. 2, page 3 ) ,
- Test of RI: Connect 0- 4V DC to Pout with inverse polarity.
- Test of R2 + R3: Connect 0-lOV DC to lout-
In order to test R2 it may be necessary to set the function selector temporarily to pos. "I>".
1. Set Tg to 2 [Link].
2. Increase the input slowly until the relevant LEO at the set point is illuminated (half intensity)
3 Reduce the input slowly until the LED is switched off again. g
4. Set Tc to the required value on the T^ scale. \
B Increase the input quickly to a value y% above the set point.
6. After the operating time (T) the LED will be illuminated (full intensity) and the relay will
change position. (Tolerance: ±10^).
