Memory Magic

- By Minnoo Singh

What is Memory ?
Memory is the diary we can carry around with us.

- Oscar Wilde

How can I deal with the information

overload?
 Notepad
 Written on a White board
 Carry a small notebook

 Retaining information : Encoding

 Storing information : Storing
 Recalling information , usually for a purpose : Retrieving

Interest -> Attention -> Encoding

Intense attention paid to something leads to Concentration.

How Can you increase your attention

span?
 Meditation
 Karate and Judo
 Control strong feelings and try to achieve mental health. Fear, anxiety , stress
and fatigue all affect your ability to remember things.
 Sudden distractions can impair your ability to concentrate.

The more you learn, the easier it is for you to learn other
things.

 Photographic Memory
 The more stimuli you store and associations you make, the
stronger the connnections.

1. Recall beginning of the list : Primacy

2. End of the list : Recency
3. But don’t recall too many words from the middle.

An ideal study session would probably be for fifty minutes, with

a ten minute break to rest and recharge before the next
session.
As time passes , less will be remembered . the idea of revision
comes from this principle.
What you need to do is review what you have learnt at a ten
minute point so that you reinforce the information when it is at
its strongest in your mind.
Again after a day.
A third quick review after a week.
Study for fifty minute session and a quick review after the
break .
Review schedule to implant information in long-term memory.
1) Review after ten minutes
2) Review after twenty four hours
3) Review after seven days
4) Review after one month
5) Review after six months

The notes, charts and outlines you prepare while studying will also help to
retrieve information.

83% of all learning takes place through sight and 11% through hearing.

It is easier to store pictures than verbal information in your memory.

A good way of adding diversity to that is if you take your notes and can
listen to them by way of review.

Specific Memory Tools

 Using Acronyms
e.g. NASA ( National Aeronautics Space Administration )
 Acrotics
e.g. MY Very Elegant Mother Just Served Us Noodles .
 Reciting Aloud or Writing Out
As you recite or write you are holding each idea in mind for the four
or five seconds that are needed for the temporary memory to be
converted into a permanent one.
 Teach any imaginary audience
 Using sound SQ3R
This method helps the students retain about eighty % of what he
has read after eight hours have elapsed, as compared to the twenty
% he would otherwise retain under ordinary conditions.

 Coat Hanger method (chunking)

 The loci method

 Mental alertness, concentration and motivation play an

important part in this technique. You could start by breathing
exercise to calm your nerves .

 Chunking

 Using graphs, maps, timelines

Uninteresting tasks or those that have resulted in some kind
of pain are easily forgotten.
Most of the information you learn is absorbed just through the
act of writing it down.

Only you can make a difference!!

As long as you remain motivated, you will learn well and reproduce
information easily.
If you do not want to learn , no on can make you. When you are
willing to learn, no one can stop you.

The more positive your attitude towards your subject of study, the
more easy it would be to remember it. Motivation is as important as
setting yourself positive goals. Reward yourself appropriately after
each accomplishment.

Things to keep in mind

Constant mental exertion reduces memory capacity as it leads to

stress, not only mental but also physical. Tiredness, physical,
weakness and negative emotions have a poor effect on memory.

Meditation and yoga, train the mind to focus. Yoga postures have a
beneficial effect memory capacity. Meditation helps you improve the
acuteness of the senses.
Try to get adequate sleep, eat a healthy diet and get enough
exercise. Memory capacity is likely to be affected by poor eating
habits.

You need to eat a good variety of low-fat foods with adequate fibre
and mineral content, and drink plenty of water.

Do not combine meals with reading or watching television.

Work constantly on increasing your powers of concentration. Do not

allow things to distract you.

Get rid of mental laziness by playing mind games, and doing

crosswords and puzzles.
Keep immaculate notes. If you revise regularly from your notes,
visual memory of the page will come back to you during tests and
serve as a prompt for recalling information .

Set aside a designated place to study at home, adequate lighting,

fresh air and comfortable chair.

Common questions

Emotional state plays a critical role in memory recall. Positive emotions enhance memory retention by promoting a conducive mental state for encoding and retrieval, whereas negative emotions like anxiety impair concentration and memory recall. Managing emotions through stress-reduction techniques such as meditation and creating a positive learning environment can significantly enhance the memory process .

The SQ3R method enhances reading comprehension and long-term retention by actively engaging the learner through structured phases: Surveying the material provides an overview, formulating Questions directs focus, Reading attentively processes information, Reciting consolidates understanding, and Reviewing reinforces retention. This comprehensive approach ensures that students retain about 80% of information after eight hours, a significant improvement over typical retention rates .

Sensory involvement, notably through sight and hearing, plays a pivotal role in learning. Approximately 83% of learning takes place through sight, while 11% through hearing. Visual stimuli are easier to store than verbal information, highlighting visual memory's stronger impact. Integrating both visual and auditory elements, such as listening to notes, diversifies the input channels and strengthens memory connections. Techniques like using graphs, maps, and timelines further enhance visual learning, optimizing memory retention and recall .

Meditation and yoga offer substantial cognitive benefits by training the mind to focus and calming mental disturbances. These practices enhance mental alertness, concentration, and the acuteness of senses, which contribute to improved memory capacity. Regular practice helps in managing stress and fostering a mental state conducive to effective learning and memory retention .

External distractions and emotions like fear, anxiety, and stress significantly impact concentration detrimentally. Sudden distractions interrupt the focus, while negative emotions divert mental resources away from the task at hand, reducing the ability to concentrate and subsequently retain information. Strategies to counteract these effects include creating a distraction-free study environment, practicing deep breathing, and engaging in concentration-enhancing activities like martial arts and meditation .

Chunking and the loci method enhance memory retention by organizing information into manageable units and using spatial memory to facilitate recall. Chunking reduces cognitive load by grouping information into larger, meaningful segments. The loci method involves associating information with specific locations or paths, leveraging visual memory to strengthen recall. These techniques create robust mental associations, making information retrieval more efficient .

Physical and mental health are tightly linked to the ability to concentrate and memorize information. Poor physical condition, including inadequate sleep, an unhealthy diet, and lack of exercise, can negatively affect memory capacity. Likewise, mental conditions like stress, anxiety, and fatigue impair concentration. To combat these negative effects, practices such as meditation, yoga, and mental games can enhance focus and memory. Maintaining a positive attitude and motivation is crucial for effective learning .

Regular revision is significant because it reinforces learning when the memory trace is fresh and strong, thereby strengthening long-term retention. The guidelines suggest a systematic revision schedule starting from ten minutes after initial study, followed by reviews at 24 hours, seven days, one month, and six months. This spaced repetition combats forgetting and ensures information is transferred from short-term to long-term memory, ultimately making retrieval more efficient .

Retrieval is the process of recalling information, usually for a purpose, and it's a critical component of memory alongside encoding and storing. Techniques such as reviewing information at specific intervals—ten minutes, twenty-four hours, seven days, one month, and six months after initial learning—help in reinforcing and retrieving that information effectively. Additional tools like preparing notes, charts, and using methods like SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Repeat, Review) and the loci method can aid in strengthening retrieval by creating stronger memory connections .

Motivation and a positive attitude significantly enhance learning and memory retention. When a learner is motivated, the willingness to engage with the material results in better absorption and recall of information. Positive goals and self-reward can boost these effects. Conversely, a lack of motivation results in poor attention and weaker memory retention. Thus, maintaining an optimistic outlook and setting clear learning objectives are crucial for effective learning .
