"IT'S HARD TO FACE REALITY WHEN YOU'RE TRAPPED IN YOUR FANTASY"

SYDEL: This quote highlights the struggle of confronting reality when someone is consumed by
the illusions created by drugs. The "fantasy" symbolizes the temporary escape or euphoria that
drugs provide, making it harder to face the truth about the harm they cause and the challenges of
real life. It emphasizes how addiction can trap individuals in a cycle of denial, preventing them
from breaking free and addressing their problems.

What is this poster all about?

This poster is about the current drug and substance abuse situation in the Philippines, focusing on
the issues of alcohol, drugs, vapes, and cigarettes. The main message of the poster is to raise
awareness about how these substances are affecting Filipino communities, especially the youth.
By showing common scenarios where people—particularly students—are exposed to these
substances, we want to highlight the dangers and the long-term consequences of their use.

Why did we choose these topics (alcohol, drugs, vapes, cigarettes)?

We chose these topics because they are some of the most common substances abused by people,
especially the youth, in the Philippines. Alcohol is widely consumed in social settings, while
drugs, vapes, and cigarettes are becoming more common and are often seen as more dangerous
because they can lead to addiction and serious health problems. These issues are not only harmful
to individuals but also affect families and communities, which is why it’s important to talk about
them.

Why did we choose these specific issues?

We focused on these issues because they are relevant to many Filipinos today, especially students
and young adults. Drug use, smoking, and vaping have become increasingly popular, and many
people are unaware of their harmful effects. By addressing these problems, we hope to educate
others and encourage healthier choices. Additionally, discussing these substances highlights the
need for better awareness, stronger prevention programs, and community support to help combat
the growing issue of addiction and its negative impact on society.

Now that we’ve talked about the problems caused by drugs, let’s look at some real examples of
how drug use affects people in the Philippines. We’ll see how these drugs are impacting lives,
families, and communities every day. These examples will help us understand just how serious the
issue is.

2. Statistics on Drug Abuse in the Philippines

I. Number of drug users in the Philippines:

Based on the latest data from the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) 2023, an estimated 2.5 million
Filipinos are currently using illegal drugs. Methamphetamine (shabu) is still the most commonly
abused substance, followed by marijuana.

II. Age of first use:

The average age of first drug use in the Philippines is getting younger. Eighteen percent (18.73%) of
users begin using drugs at the age of 15 or younger, which is a major concern for the country’s youth.
This highlights the growing trend of early exposure to illegal substances.

III. Drug use among youth:
According to the DDB 2023 survey, 19% of Filipino youth aged 15-19 are currently involved in drug
use. This is an alarming statistic, especially since the youth are more vulnerable to addiction and its
long-term impacts.

IV. Shabu remains the most abused drug:

Methamphetamine continues to be the top drug of choice in the Philippines. A large portion of drug
users, especially in urban areas, rely on shabu, which remains widely available and relatively cheap.

V. Drug-related crimes:
Drug abuse is also a key driver of crime in the country. According to reports from the Philippine
National Police (PNP), a significant portion of crimes, including theft, robbery, and violence, are linked
to drug use, with drug-related offenses accounting for over 70% of crimes in certain areas.

3. Cultural and Social Implications of Drug Abuse

I. Impact on Families:
 Financial Ruin: Addiction leads to financial struggles, diverting resources from basic needs and
causing poverty.
 Erosion of Trust and Communication: Addiction breaks down trust and communication within
families, leading to misunderstandings and resentment.
 Domestic Violence and Abuse: Drug abuse fuels aggression, resulting in physical and emotional
abuse within families, particularly harming children.
 Neglect and Abandonment: Addicts may neglect their family duties, leaving children without
care, or even causing families to flee their homes.
 Stigma and Shame: The stigma surrounding drug addiction prevents families from seeking help,
creating isolation and shame.

II. Undermining Filipino Cultural Values:

 Bayanihan (Community Spirit): Drug abuse isolates individuals, weakening community
cooperation and support.
 Hiya (Shame): The fear of judgment prevents individuals from seeking help, deepening their
struggles.
 Pagpapahalaga sa Pamilya (Value of Family): Addiction disrupts family relationships, weakening
the bonds of love and support.
 Pagkamagalang (Respect): Drug use leads to disrespect for authority and social norms, breaking
down social order and community respect.

III. Impact on Communities:

 Increased Crime: Drug abuse is linked to higher crime rates, making communities less safe.
 Social Disintegration: Addiction isolates people from their communities, weakening social ties.
 Health Issues: Drug abuse causes various health problems, straining healthcare systems and
lowering overall well-being.

4. Role of Community and Family Support (Bayanihan)

Family is an important factor in helping drug addicts, as family provide emotional and practical
assistance for recovery. But addiction is a family disease in that it introduces stress, anxiety, and
emotional and behavioral strain on the family, affecting spouses and children who may themselves be
more susceptible to addiction. The emotional whirlwind can leave guilt, anger and powerlessness in its
wake, frequently resulting in fractured relations, breakdowns in communication and isolation. But
families are also dealing with money issues, legal issues, and social stigma, making things only harder.

At the community level, support is important in addiction recovery. Having a support community
provides you with empathy and inspiration to stay in recovery, as well as an opportunity to learn some
essential life skills that can keep you on the right track. This common purpose helps fight the isolation
many feel when struggling with addiction.

5. Solutions and Actions for Drug Abuse Prevention

1. Strengthen Families
Families are key to preventing drug abuse. Programs like Systematic Training for Effective Parenting
(STEP) teach parents how to improve relationships with their kids, spot early signs of drug use, and get
help. Open communication in families also helps stop young people from trying drugs.
2. Start Community Programs
Community-based treatment and care are cheaper and easier to access than big rehab centers. These
programs focus on health and human rights, making it less scary for people to ask for help because they
won’t feel judged or punished.
3. Educate People Early
Teaching kids and teens about the dangers of drugs is important. For younger children (7-10 years old),
fun activities like puppet shows and games can help them understand. Teens and adults need deeper
programs that teach them about the risks and how to make healthy choices.
4. Improve Drug Policies
Drug laws should focus on health and human rights. Instead of just punishment, policies should support
treatments and programs that respect people’s dignity. The Manila Declaration highlights the
importance of these balanced approaches.
5. Make Rehab Easy to Access
Rehabilitation services should be affordable and available for everyone. Tailored programs can help
people with different levels of drug addiction. Putting rehab centers in communities makes it easier for
people to get help and rejoin society.
6. Get Communities Involved
Communities can make a big difference by coming together. Support groups and local events can raise
awareness and help people who are affected by drug abuse. Working as a team brings better results.
