Trigonometric Ratios Lesson Plan for 9th Grade

The lesson plan for Mathematics 9 focuses on teaching students to identify and recall the six trigonometric ratios for special angles (30°, 45°, 60°) and to construct a unit circle for visualizing these ratios. It includes introductory activities, a motivation challenge called 'Angle Detective Challenge', and various assessment methods such as multiple-choice and true/false questions. The plan emphasizes problem-solving and mathematical reasoning through practical applications of trigonometric ratios.

Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan

Mathematics 9

I. LEARNING Objectives:
OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

 Identify and recall the six trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine,

tangent, cosecant, secant, and cotangent) for special angles (30°,
45°, 60°),

 Value the logical process of determining trigonometric ratios and

understand its role in problem-solving and mathematical
reasoning, and

 Construct a unit circle and use it to visually find the sine, cosine,
and tangent values for special angles (30°, 45°, 60°).

II. SUBJECT Topic: Finds the trigonometric ratios of special angles

B. MOTIVATION  ACTIVITY
"Angle Detective Challenge"
Directions: Identify and calculate the trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine
and tangent) of Special Angles (30° , 45 ° , 60 ° ¿.

 Welcome, detectives! You’re about to take on a mystery-solving

challenge that will test your knowledge of angles and
trigonometric ratios. You’ll have 5 minutes to solve each case
and find the missing trigonometric ratios for some special angles.
 Your goal is to solve the clues, identify the angle shown, and then
write down the correct sine, cosine, and tangent ratios for that
angle. Be quick and accurate – the clock is ticking!
 The students should look at the angle shown in the triangle and
be ready to solve for the sine, cosine, and tangent ratios.
 Card 1: Triangle with a 30° angle and instructions to find the sine,
cosine, and tangent ratios.
 Card 2: Triangle with a 45° angle instructions to find the sine, cosine,
and tangent ratios.
 Card 3: Triangle with a 60° angle and instructions to find the sine,
cosine, and tangent ratios.

 Each group will identify the angle from the triangle on their card
and write down the correct sine, cosine, and tangent ratios for
that angle on sticky notes or small whiteboards.

Answer:

 30° angle:

 sin(30°) = 1/2
 cos(30°) = √3/2
 tan(30°) = √3/3

 45° angle:

 sin(45°) = √2/2
 cos(45°) = √2/2
 tan(45°) = 1

 60° angle:

 sin(60°) = √3/2
 cos(60°) = 1/2
 tan(60°) = √3

Congratulations, detectives! You've cracked the code for these special

angles. You've now unlocked the key to understanding these important
trigonometric ratios that you'll use throughout this lesson.

Now that you’ve solved the mystery, we’re ready to dive deeper into the
world of trigonometric ratios. Get ready for the next step in our journey!

 ANALYSIS
Discussion Questions

 How did identifying the angles in the triangles help you determine
the correct trigonometric ratios?
 Did you feel confident solving the mystery, or were there
moments when you felt unsure?
 How comfortable were you with using sticky notes or whiteboards
to write your answers? Was there any difficulty in expressing the
ratios clearly?
 ABSTRACTION
Finds the trigonometric ratios of special angles

45° – 45° – 90° Right Triangle 30° – 60° – 90° Right Triangle
Theorem Theorem

In a 45° – 45° – 90° triangle, In a 30° – 60° – 90° triangle,

✔ the legs are congruent ✔ the length of the hypotenuse is

twice the length of the shorter leg
✔ the length of the hypotenuse is
√2 times the length of a leg ✔ the length of the longer leg is √3
times the length of the shorter leg
hypotenuse = √2 times the leg
hypotenuse = 2 times the shorter
leg

longer leg = √3 times the shorter

leg

Example:

Given: ∆BEN is a 30˚-60˚-90˚ triangle with its corresponding sides.

Let’s say, we want to know the value of tan 30˚.Here is how we can solve
for it.

Given: ∆KAT is a 45˚-45˚-90˚ triangle with its corresponding sides.

Let’s say, we want to know the value of sin 45˚. Here is how we can
solve for it.

 APPLICATION
Find the length of the indicated side.

The given figure is a 45°- 45° - 90° triangle

y is the hypotenuse
leg = 5√2

Since hypotenuse =√2(leg)

then we have y =√2(5√2)
y = 5√4
y = 5 (2)
y = 10

The given figure is a 30°- 60° - 90° triangle

w is the shorter leg
z is the hypotenuse
longer leg = 6

to find w use:
longer leg = √3 (shorter leg)
6 = √3 (w) substitute the given
6 = w√3 multiply the left side
6 w √3
= divide both side by √ 3
√3 √ 3
6
w=
√3
w= × √ √3 )
6 3
rationalize the denominator (multiply
√3 √ 3 √3
w= √
6 3
simplify by dividing the numerator by the denominator
√3
w=2 √ 3

To find z use:
hypotenuse = 2(shorter leg)
z = 2 (2√3)
z = 4√3
