Objectives: Students will be able to apply the solution process of solving system of
equations discussed in lecture.
1. Considering the following system of equations:
(i) 2x–y + 3z = 9 (ii) x–2y + z − w = −1 (iii) 3x–y − z + 2w = 0

(A) Find the rank of coefficient matrix and augmented matrix corresponding to the following
system of linear equations.
(B) Discuss the consistency and/or number of solutions on the basis of ranks of coefficient
matrix and augmented matrix.
(C) Solve the system of equations, if consistent, using:
a) Gauss elimination method.
b) Gauss Jordan method (homework problem).
