Subtopic: Solving right triangles where the two legs are given.
Grade Level: Grade 9
Time: 7:30-11:00am – 1:30-2:15pm
Subject: Mathematics
I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, learners are expected to:
recall and apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse in
right triangles where both legs are given.
recognize and explain the real-world applications of solving right triangles, showing
an understanding of how this skill is useful in various fields.
demonstrate the ability to use sine, cosine, and tangent to find the angles of a right
triangle, given the two legs.

B. LESSON PROPER
1. ACTIVITY
You are hiking up a mountain, and from your position, you can see the peak. The angle
from where you stand to the peak is 65°, and the height of the mountain (opposite
side) is 500 meters.
C a = 500
65⁰
A b C
2. ANALYSIS
What is the importance of trigonometry?
When you have two legs of a triangle, how do you use the Pythagorean
Theorem to find the hypotenuse?
3. ABSTRACTION
Solving right triangles
where the two legs are
Example:
Triangle ABC is right-angled at C. B
If a = 18.5 and b = 14.2. Find ∠A, ∠B and c.
Step 1: Solve for side c. c a = 18.5
Since two sides are given, we can use the Pythagorean
Theorem to solve for the third side.
A b = 14.2 C
c² = a² + b²
c² = (18.5)² + (14.2)²
c² = 342.25 + 201.64
c² = 543.89
√ c ² = √ 543.89
c = 23.32
Step 2: Solve for side ∠A Step 3: Solve for side ∠B
∠B= 180⁰- (∠A +∠C)
opp
tan θ =

∠B = 180⁰ - (52.50⁰ +

tan A =
b

∠B = 180⁰ - 142.5⁰
18.5
tan A =
14.2
tan A = 1.3028 ∠B = 37.5⁰
A = 52.50⁰
Example:
B
In a right triangle, the lengths of the two legs are:
Leg 1: a=7 c a=7
C b = 24 A
Leg 2: b=24
Find ∠A, ∠B and c.
Step 1: Solve for side c. Step 2: Solve for side ∠A
opp
c² = a² + b² tan θ =
adj
a
c² = (7)² + (24)² tan A =
b
7
c² = 49 + 576 tan A =
24
c² = 625 tan A = 0.2917
√ c ² = √ 625 A = 16.26⁰
Step 3: Solve for side ∠B
c = 25
∠B= 180⁰- (∠A +∠C
∠B = 180⁰ - (16.26 + 90⁰)
∠B = 180⁰ - 106.26
∠B = 73.74⁰
4. APPLICATION (3 minutes) (15 points)
In a right triangle, the lengths of the legs are 5 units and 12 units.
Find the length of the hypotenuse and the angles of the triangle.
C b = 12 A
a=5 c
IV. EVALUATION (20 points) (8 minutes)
In a right triangle, the lengths of the two legs are 11 units and 60 units. Find the length of the
B
hypotenuse and the angles of the triangle.
c a = 11
A b = 60 C
V. ASSIGNMENT
In a right triangle, the lengths of the two legs are 14 units and 48 units. Find the length of the
hypotenuse and the angles of the triangle.
