Gasoline particulate filter (if equipped)

The Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) is the system that removes the soot from the exhaust gas.
Unlike a disposable air filter, the GPF system automatically
burns (oxidizes) and removes the accumulated soot while driving. However, repeated short-distance
driving or long-distance driving at a low speed can stop the accumulated soot from automatically
being removed by the GPF system. If the accumulated soot reaches a certain amount, the GPF
warning light will illuminate. To re-operate the GPF system, the vehicle should be driven for more
than 30 minutes at a speed of 50mph and faster. Ensure the following conditions are met:
safe road conditions, transmission 3 or above, and engine speed of 1,500- 4,000 rpm. Driving at 50
mph or faster for recommended hours will get the GPF Maintenance Emission control system
system back to work and stop the GPF warning light.
If the GPF warning light stays on or the warning message "check exhaust system" pops up even after
driving at recommended speed and for recommended hours, visit a professional workshop and have
them check the GPF system. Constant driving with the GPF warning light on can damage the GPF
system and undermine fuel economy.

6. Move the shift lever.
7. Remove the tool from the shift lock override access hole then install the knob boot (1).

When you turn the engine on and off, you may hear clicking sounds as the system goes through a
self-test. This is a normal sound for the dual clutch transmission. During the first 1,500 km (1000
miles), you may feel that the vehicle may not be smooth when accelerating at low speed. During this
break-in period, the shift quality and performance of your new vehicle is continuously optimized.

When driving in stop-and-go traffic, in stop condition, to reduce the driving stress and have better
transmission operation move the shift lever to N (Neutral) or P (Parking) position. For the dial shift,
select P which is also N.
For EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) equipped vehicles with AUTO HOLD function used while driving, if
the vehicle is in OFF position, the electronic parking brake will be engaged automatically. Therefore,
AUTO HOLD function should be turned off before the vehicle is in OFF position. Can use the paddle
shifters when in D and Sports Mode.

Pull and hold the right side (+) of the paddle shifter to turn on or off smart regeneration system.

The initial setting will be set to 0 when the vehicle is in D (Drive) and in ECO mode.
If the vehicle changes to P (Park), R (Reverse), N (Neutral) or manual mode (shift lever), or vehicle is
in SPORT mode, the vehicle regenerative braking system control will not be operated. Resetting the
vehicle in D (Drive) will set the regenerative system setting to 0.

Note – it’s unclear whether manual control of the regen makes much difference to the economy
since regen is still done using conventional braking and coasting.

Smart Regeneration System

Controls the regenerative braking automatically according to the road gradient and driving condition
of the vehicle in front. Only works above 7.4 mph. The system minimizes the unnecessary operation
of the brake and acceleration pedal, improving the electric efficiency and assisting the driver. Most
videos say to use this. Note braking is affected by the presence of vehicles nearby.

With the vehicle on, touch Settings → Vehicle → Eco Vehicle → Smart Recuperation on the
infotainment system or pull and hold the right side paddle shifter for over 1 second to turn on and
off the automatic change of the regenerative braking. The level of regenerative braking displayed
on the cluster in stages is converted to the 'AUTO' indicator light. When the vehicle is turned off
and then turned on again, the regenerative braking mode returns to step ‘0’.

When the system is turned on from the Vehicle Settings menu, but the front radar does not
recognize the vehicle in front, 'AUTO' is displayed in white. If the front radar recognizes the vehicle
in front, 'AUTO' is displayed in green. The regenerative braking level is automatically controlled
depending on the driving condition of the vehicle in front and the level is indicated with arrows.

Brake Disc Cleaning

Press AUTO HOLD button for more than 3 seconds. If the message is shown on the cluster, Brake
Disc Cleaning function is activated. Depress the brake pedal around 10

Using the 12V battery reset switch

This vehicle does not have a regular 12V battery that needs periodic replacement. It is lithium ion
polymer type integrated into the HEV high voltage battery. The vehicle has a 12V battery protection
system that cuts 12V battery from vehicle draw to prevent full discharge.

1. Press the 12V Battery Reset switch to reconnect the 12V battery.
2. Start the vehicle within 15 seconds of pressing the 12V Battery Reset switch.
3. After starting the vehicle (READY indicator on), operate the vehicle safely outdoors in ready mode
stopped and/ or drive it for 30 minutes total to charge the 12V battery fully.

If you do not start the vehicle immediately after pressing the 12V Battery Reset switch, the power of
12V battery is automatically disconnected after few seconds to save the 12V battery from additional
discharge. If the 12V battery is disconnected prior to starting the vehicle, press the 12V Battery
Reset switch again and then immediately start the vehicle as explained. Repeated use of the 12V
Battery Reset switch without a sufficient vehicle ON cycle (30 Min+) may cause over discharge of the
12V battery, which will prevent the vehicle from starting. If the 12V battery is over discharged to a
point that the reset does not work, try to jumpstart the vehicle. NOTICE After starting the vehicle
(READY indicator on), the 12V battery is being charged whether the engine is running or not.
Although there is no engine sound, it is unnecessary to depress the accelerator pedal.

Pan-European eCall system The car is equipped with a device connected with the Pan-European
eCall system for making emergency call to response teams. The Pan- European eCall system is an
automatic emergency call service made in event of a traffic accident or other accidents on the roads
of Europe. The system allows contacting with an officer of the single duty dispatch service in case of
accidents on the roads of Europe. Triggered automatically or by button by overhead lights.

The red and green LED illuminates for 3 seconds when the ignition switch is in the ON position. After
that they will switch off at normal operation of the system. If there are some problems in the
system, the LED remains in red.

The Pan-European eCall system battery supplies power during 1 hour in case main power source of
the vehicle is cut off due to the collision during the emergency [Link] Pan-European eCall
system battery should be replaced every 4 years.

Disabling Lane Following Assist may benefit drivers who prefer manual control over their steering inputs, potentially reducing reliance on automated systems and enhancing driver engagement. However, it might also increase driver workload and reduce safety, as the system assists in keeping the vehicle centered in its lane, minimizing lane drifting risks. Drivers should only disable this feature if they are confident in their ability to maintain lane discipline without assistance .

If a Kia Niro will be unused for a long time, the hybrid system may discharge, leading to a drained battery. It is recommended to drive the vehicle multiple times a month, for an hour or about 16 km each time, to maintain the battery charge. Additionally, when parking for extended periods, the owner should ensure the vehicle is parked with the parking brake engaged and consider routinely inspecting tire pressure via the TPMS .

The Green Zone EV Drive mode should be utilized when entering areas within the green zone based on navigation data or while departing from home based on driving history. This mode is designed to expand EV operation, maximizing energy efficiency and reducing emissions while driving within environmentally sensitive areas. Utilizing this mode aligns with sustainability efforts and can result in lower running costs due to reduced fuel consumption .

The Safe Exit Warning system helps prevent collisions that might occur when a passenger opens a door without noticing an approaching vehicle. It uses radar to detect vehicles coming from the rear area, providing warnings through a message and audible alerts when a door is opened under such conditions, thus enhancing passenger safety when exiting the vehicle .

Using manual mode with paddle shifters offers the driver the ability to control the vehicle's gearing without removing hands from the steering wheel, enhancing the driving experience with greater engagement and control. Pulling the right paddle shifter shifts gears up, while pulling the left shifts gears down. Manual mode automatically switches to automatic shift mode under conditions such as when vehicle speed falls below 3 km/h or when the accelerator pedal is gently depressed for more than 6 seconds, which is beneficial for convenience and safety in low-speed or stop-and-go traffic .

The Kia Niro uses Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist to detect and monitor approaching vehicles in the driver's blind spot area. It alerts the driver with a warning message and audible sounds if there's a risk of collision. The system can also assist in braking control to prevent collisions. It uses radar located on the rear corners of the vehicle and only issues warnings when the driver signals a lane change into the path of another vehicle, operating above 12 mph .

If the TPMS consistently alerts for low tire pressure, first check the tire pressures manually and inflate to the recommended levels, as the reset occurs automatically when pressures are set correctly. There is no manual reset button for the TPMS on the Kia Niro. If the spare tire is installed, a warning may persist as it lacks a sensor. Persistent incorrect alerts could be due to external RF interference affecting the system's sensitivity, which should then be inspected by a Kia service partner .

Smart Cruise Control enhances driving convenience by maintaining a set speed and distance from the vehicle ahead, reducing the driver’s need to frequently adjust speed manually. It uses camera and radar systems to automatically adjust speed based on traffic conditions and can resume control if the vehicle halts briefly. This system allows the driver to focus more on steering and monitoring the road, reducing fatigue, particularly on long commutes or highway drives .

The smart key is essential for starting the Kia Niro, as it must be detected within the vehicle or used to press the ENGINE START/STOP button at a right angle if its battery is weak. The stop lamp fuse is also critical; a blown fuse will prevent normal engine start. In case of a failed start due to these issues, one can replace the stop lamp fuse or use the smart key to directly press the start button. If neither is possible immediately, pressing the start button for 10 seconds while in the ACC position might temporarily resolve the issue until a permanent fix is made .

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist might be limited or disabled if the front windshield, radar cover, or sensor is obstructed by foreign materials such as snow or rain, reducing the system's detecting performance. When this occurs, a warning message and lights will appear on the instrumental cluster. To address these issues, the driver should ensure that these areas are clean and unobstructed to restore full function of the collision-avoidance system .
