Static Routing
(a) A Network switch S1 is used to interconnect 5 hosts (host1, host 2, ….host5). The five hosts are
connected to interfaces Fa 0/2 to Fa 0/6.
(b) Routers R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are used to interconnect four different networks each with the
above configuration: 5 hosts interconnected via a switch. Switches S1,S2,S3 are each connected to
interface G 0/1 on routers R1, R2 and R3 respectively. S5 is connected to interface G 0/2 on router
R5. The above named four networks are configured as subnets of one network with NetID [Link]
(Subnetting the network is one of the design decisions you must make. Every subnet ID in the
network must be a subnet of NetID [Link]. Consider carefully how many subnets you need to
create, Use VLSM rather than FLSM)
(c) The routers are connected in the following manner: R1 (using interfaces G0/0 and G0/2) is
connected to R2 and R3 on corresponding/similar interfaces. R4 (using interfaces G0/2 and G0/0) is
connected to R2 and R3 on corresponding/similar interfaces. R4 (using interface G0/1) is connected
to R5 on the corresponding/similar interface.(See network diagram at the bottom of the page)
● In packet tracer, interconnect the devices. use Router model No: 2911 , Switch model No: 2960
( To be video recorded)
● What is an appropriate number of subnets to create for this network?
● Create the subnets and describe in detail how you propose to
○ allocate subnet IDs to the different subnets in the network. Explain!.
○ allocate IP addresses to the different hosts in the network. Explain!.
○ allocate IP addresses to the different router interfaces in the network. Explain!.
● Configure the network appropriately based on the IP address allocation described above.
○ For each host:
■ Configure the IP address
■ Configure the subnet mask
■ Configure the default gateway
○ For each router
■ Configure the IP address for each connected interface ( Configuration of the
routers to be video recorded)
● Show and explain in detail the routing table on each of the Routers. Test connectivity between
networks. ( To be video recorded)
● Use static routing to configure routing tables. Show and explain in detail the routing table on each
of the Routers. Test connectivity between networks
○ Simulate a message transmission (use ping command) from a host on S1 to a host on S2.
Repeat similar message transmissions for every different pair of networks. ( To be video
recorded)
● In the special case of message from S1 to S5:
○ Trace the src IP and Dest IP addresses and src and dest MAC addresses of the message
from source to destination
■ Show src IP and Dest IP addresses and src and dest MAC addresses of the
message at source (as it leaves the sending host). ( Answer to be video recorded)
■ Show the inbound and outbound source and destination IP address on the
message as it enters and leaves each of the different routers on its way to the
destination. Show the inbound and outbound source and destination MAC
address on the message as it enters and leaves each of the different routers on its
way to the destination. ( To be video recorded)
■ At each of the routers, are there any differences (In src or dest IP addresses or in
the src or dest Mac addresses) when compared with the original message?
Explain!.
■ Using the routing table on Router R5 (show), How will the message be processed
by the destination router before being forwarded to the destination host. Give a
step by step account from the time the frame arrives at the router until it leaves
the router. ( Answer to be video recorded)
