II. Challenges Faced by Music Teachers (RQ1)

1. General Teaching Challenges (Choose one to answer)

I.1 "What are the biggest challenges you face as a music teacher in the Philippine
educational system?”

Having a community with less appreciation to arts. Most teachers recognized the need
but it was not given that high regard. It was being describe or treated like an extra-
curricular rather than a curriculum designed for special students who excels in music.

another challenge is lack of support. for 6 years I am doing my class on a bench outside
the classroom. The program was not given enough attention.

Lack of facilities and equipment. One of the biggest challenge is to let student
experience to hold or play an instrument. this is where they can apply there theory into
action. I remember I need to draw a life sized banduria just to show the student how the
scale apply to the said instrument. I have created a two octave piano to let all my
student understand a little of piano while I am making the sound using my phone piano.

I.2 "How do these challenges affect your ability to teach music effectively?"

It didn’t stop the growth of students despite of these challenges we were able to
conquer the national festival of talents, Panaad sa Negros, NAmcya and other
music competition but I think they will be more if we have the facility that needed.

II.1 "Do you feel that your school administration supports music education? Why or why
not?"

For 5 years I don’t think that my adinistrators and principal gives important. it was
treated like a requirement for the benefit of the school. No classroom for arts
curriculum. No homeroom. It gives us the struggle to encourage parents to enroll
there students.

This year we are blessed with superintendent and a principal who did their best for
us to be recognized in the regional level .

II.2 "What challenges do you encounter in terms of school policies, curriculum

requirements, or administrative support?"

Lack of Instruments, Curriculum cannot be fully materialized due to lack of resources.

classroom facilities? If not, how does this impact your teaching?"

For teaching materials the national commission for culture and the arts has an online platform
where odules and learning materials are uploaded whoch is in line with the curriculum.

but learning resources of the deped somehow neglect to provide.

for musical instrument a piano was provided and two guitar all other ointruments is funded through
the winning price or bought from my personal money.

it was challenging it keeps me moving but it was really a burded. I could have a better job.

III.2 "How do you compensate for the lack of resources?"

I provide. I look for resources. we join competitions that could generate fund. We do concerst we
create song. we are able to sustain the supply of the strings and other small materials.

IV.1 "Do students show interest in music education? If not, what factors contribute

I really eanted that there will someone from our city. I always say this. what if I was given enough
opportunity as kid to learn music in proper set up I could have been a better one. I was a fokdancer
and trained professionally. I am always looking to the rondalla ensemble if we are having a
rehearsalas in a bog university during my high school days. I know how to play it cause I
understand it but I was not trained that much,. I learned from my own self, observation, until I
decided to study and I realized there are still a lot of things to learn.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Music teachers remain motivated by the desire to provide opportunities they lacked in their own youth and the personal fulfillment from seeing students excel and participate in musical performances and competitions . Their passion for music and the belief in the transformative power of music education keep them devoted to the profession .

Music teachers recommend reforms such as increased government funding, support for arts curricula, and implementing more comprehensive and robust music programs across all school levels. They also emphasize professional development, including teacher training programs and workshops, and integration of cultural and modern musical elements into the curriculum . These measures aim to create equitable opportunities for music education nationwide .

Resource and facility constraints severely impact the teaching process. Teachers often lack sufficient teaching materials and musical instruments, which forces them to innovate, such as using makeshift resources or purchasing instruments from personal funds . This lack of resources creates frustration among teachers and limits students' hands-on experiences, undermining the full realization of the music curriculum .

Music teachers cope by creatively utilizing competitions to generate funds, organizing concerts, and crafting educational resources by themselves, such as life-sized drawings of instruments . These strategies allow them to partially counter resource shortages and keep the music classes proactive but can be burdensome and may not entirely replace the value of real instruments .

Integrating Philippine folk and indigenous music into the curriculum can serve as a crucial strategy for preserving cultural identity by exposing students to their cultural heritage and traditions. This approach not only enriches students' knowledge and appreciation of their roots but also fosters cultural pride. By embedding these elements into structured learning, music education can create a more comprehensive and culturally relevant experience that promotes artistic excellence and diversity .

Professional development is crucial for enhancing teaching quality and adapting to new methodologies. However, challenges include limited opportunities specifically for music teachers, as most available training focuses on broader subjects like MAPEH . Increased access to specialized training and networking with artists could provide much-needed support and innovation in teaching practices .

Music teachers envision a future where every Filipino has access to quality music education that fosters creativity, cultural appreciation, and artistic excellence. Achieving this requires implementing comprehensive music programs, using modern technology, ensuring teacher training, and integrating cultural elements into the curriculum . It also necessitates concerted efforts from policymakers, educators, and communities to prioritize arts education equitably alongside other academic disciplines .

Music teachers in the Philippines face challenges such as a lack of appreciation for arts in the community, insufficient institutional support, inadequate facilities, and limited resources, like musical instruments. These factors treat music education more as an extracurricular activity rather than part of a core curriculum . Despite these challenges, teachers strive to maintain effective teaching, evident from their students' successes in national competitions. However, they could achieve more with better facilities and support .

Institutional support significantly influences music education. In many schools, administrations do not prioritize music, often treating it as a mere requirement for the school's benefit, leading to struggles in gaining parental support and inadequate facilities for arts curricula . Improved recognition at higher levels, however, as seen with supportive superintendents and principals, can lead to regional recognition and encouragement .

Parents and the local community can enhance support by actively participating in school events, fostering a supportive environment for students, and collaborating with schools to provide better instruments and facilities. Local government and organizations can contribute by allocating resources and showing their commitment to cultural and artistic growth . This moral and material support can significantly uplift music education's status and effectiveness.
