NASA System Design Processes Overview

The class notes discuss NASA's system design processes, emphasizing the iterative nature of system design and the interdependence of major activities. It highlights the importance of understanding stakeholder expectations and the evolving context of problems as new stakeholders are identified. Additionally, it outlines the significance of establishing a Concept of Operations (ConOps) early in the design process and the types of requirements that need to be derived and allocated.

 Nasa system design processes

 System designs highly iterative
 The four major activities have interdepended
 As understanding grows insights about mew stakeholders and their
needs become clear
 With each new stakeholder, the problem and what it takes toa address
it, is be addressed.
 The entire context changes as time progresses and that may have an
impact on many elements.
 Which comes first, stakeholder or problem?
o Stakeholder expectations: needs foals and objectives
o Iteratively as we learn more about the problem and the needs of
the initial stakeholders.
o Establish list of stakeholder’s expectations
o Elect the stakeholders and expectations
o Establish operations concept and support strategies
o Define stakeholders’ expectations in acceptable statements.
o Analyze expectations statements for measures of effectiveness
o Validate that defined expectations statements reflect
bidirectional traceability
o Obtain stakeholder commitment to the validates set of
expectations.
o Baseline stakeholder expectations
o Capture work products from stakeholders’ expectations activities.
 Problems:
o Can you list all the stakeholders before any elicitation’s activities
o This looks loke a waterfall, but what would be better model?
o Do you understand all the input and output deliverables and the
activities.
 Stakeholders:
o What they provide you
o What you need to provide to them
 ConOps is the important driver in the system requirements and
therefore should be considered early in the system design processes.
 Derieved and allocated requirements
o Functional
o Performance
o Interface
o Operational
o Safety
