Foundation Engineering: Retaining Wall Analysis

The document outlines a tutorial for CEN-306: Foundation Engineering, focusing on the calculation of safety factors for cantilever and gravity retaining walls. It provides specific wall dimensions, soil properties, and methods for calculating overturning, sliding, and bearing capacity using different pressure theories. The tutorial includes two problems with varying parameters and approaches for analysis.

Tutorial 3

1. For the cantilever retaining wall shown in Fig. 1, the wall dimensions are H = 8 m, x1 = 0.4 m, x2 = 0.6 m,
x3 = 1.5 m, x4 = 3.5 m, x5 = 0.96 m, D = 1.75 m and α = 10º. The soil properties are ϒ 1 = 16.8 kN/m3, ϕ1 = 32º,
ϒ2 = 17.6 kN/m3, ϕ 2 = 28º and c2 = 30 kN/m2. Calculate the safety factors concerning overturning, sliding and
bearing capacity, Use unit weight of concrete, ϒ c = 25.0 kN/m3. Neglect passive earth pressure and use δ =
(2/3)ϕ, adhesion factor = (2/3) c and qu = 300 kPa.

2. A gravity retaining wall is shown in Fig. 2. Calculate the safety factor concerning overturning, sliding and
bearing capacity.
Given:
Wall dimensions: H = 6 m, x1 = 0.6 m, x2 = 2 m, x3 = 2 m, x4 = 0.5 m, x5 = 0.75 m, x6 = 0.8 m, D = 1.5 m.
Soil properties: ϒ 1 = 16.5 kN/m3, ϕ 1 = 32º, ϒ 2 = 18 kN/m3, ϕ 2 = 22º and c2 = 40 kN/m2.
Use Rankine active pressure for calculation and unit weight of concrete, ϒ c = 25.0 kN/m3, qu = 450 kPa.

3. Repeat Problem 2 using Coulomb’s active pressure for calculation and δ = 2 ϕ 1 / 3.
