12 Models 1x0 Overview

Chapter 1. The Self Checkout System
The Self Checkout System

The Self Checkout System is a self-serve alternative to conventional checkout lanes that is
available in cash, cashless, and kiosk models that can be configured with security options such as
bagging area scales that verify the weight of scanned items when they are bagged. The system is
a fast, cost-effective solution and an easy-to-use alternative that allows retail shoppers to scan
orders, and select payment options to complete purchases or request assistance using the user
interface.
Note: An optional transaction awareness light can also notify shopper assistants of problems on
the system or of a request by the shopper for assistance.
Table 1 contains a brief description of the hardware and software used on the Self Checkout
System models to create a complete retail solution. See “The self checkout system models” on
page 17 and “Model and unit information” on page 15 for detailed information about the self
checkout system models and the units that make up the system.

1Alllane models have the number "1" as the first character. The second character is a 0 (cashless
lane), a "1" (cash lane), a "K" (Kiosk lane), or a "B" (BOSS). The third character is always "0".

A Self Checkout System retail configuration consists of a Back Office System Server (BOSS),
multiple self checkout systems, and up to two shopper assistant cabinets located in the front end
of the store. The self checkout systems communicate with the BOSS.
Note: The BOSS is a computer that resides in the back office of the store. Some implementations
include an enterprise BOSS (eBOSS) for all stores, rather than a BOSS in each store.
Figure 1 shows an example of a Toshiba solution.

Figure 1. Self Checkout System retail configuration

BOSS
Used to store and distribute self checkout system software, administer system
configuration data, manage the list of shopper assistants and administrators, modify
security database information, and manage Quick Lookup information for up to 20
systems. It can also be used to monitor system performance, generate and display reports,
and collect and view diagnostic data. Each self checkout system communicates with the
BOSS. The item security information is replicated to each self checkout system so the
system is not dependent on constant communication with the BOSS. The self checkout
system scans items and verifies the information using the data in the database on the
system.
Note: One BOSS is required per retail environment.

Mobile terminal
A handheld device used by shopper assistants. Toshiba provides the software, but does
not supply the equipment. The shopper assistant uses the mobile terminal to monitor and
control selected functions of the self checkout lanes from anywhere in the store that is
within range of the wireless network. The shopper assistant can use the mobile terminal
to add oversized items to a shoppers order, to list the items that a shopper purchases, and
to assist multiple shoppers without having to travel to each system.
Note: A shopper assistant is a store employee trained to help shoppers with questions
and operational procedures pertaining to the self checkout system.

14 Models 1x0 Overview

Shopper Assistant Cabinet
Houses a standard POS terminal that is used by shopper assistants to retrieve suspended
self checkout system transactions and perform actions that could not be performed at the
system, such as processing checks and selling items that are not allowed to be sold at the
self checkout system. It can also be used to perform normal cashier operations.

Model and unit information

This section provides detailed information about the payment and scanning units of the Self
Checkout System and the optional units that can be attached to them.

Core, cash, and other units

Using the Core and scanning units, shoppers scan and weigh items, process coupons, pay for
their orders, and receive instructions. The following section describes the units that make up the
cash and cashless models.

Core Unit
The Core Unit is the heart of the Self Checkout System. The Core Unit houses the Lane PC, the
Touch Screen Display, the payment terminal, and the Receipt printer. The Core Unit can stand
alone and becomes the foundation of the Kiosk system. The Core Unit is also designed to accept
a Scanner/Scale cabinet and bagging shelves to form a cashless Self Checkout System. Finally, a
cash cabinet can be attached under the Scanner/Scale Cabinet to create a fully-functional cash
handling Self Checkout System.

Cash Cabinet Unit

The Cash Cabinet unit houses a Recycling Coin Handler (RCH) and a Banknote Recycler (BNR).
Note: Figure 2 shows Cash Cabinet and Scanner/Scale Cabinet units mounted together on the
Core Unit and include a scanner/scale and payment terminal. Both of these are customer
furnished devices.

Scanner/Scale Cabinet Unit

The Scanner/Scale Cabinet unit attaches to the Core Unit and forms a cantilever housing for the
Scanner/Scale, proximity sensor, and coupon acceptor.
Figure 3 shows the scanning unit in a stand alone, cashless configuration.
A cashless model made up of a Core Unit, Scanner/Scale Cabinet unit, and a customer supplied
payment terminal attached can process cashless transactions such as debit cards or other forms
of cashless payments.

16 Models 1x0 Overview

Figure 3. Cashless model

Bagging unit
The bagging unit provides an area for shoppers to bag their items.
For the scan and bag lanes, the security scale is located in the bagging unit, with the security
scale platter forming the base for the bag racks. For these models, the bagging unit supports
weight-based security for the items by reporting the weight of each item added to the bagging
area. The system software checks this weight information against security information in a
database.

The self checkout system models

The different models of the self checkout system allow retailers to choose a configuration to
satisfy specific store requirements and space constraints. Models are available in both left-to-
right and right-to-left configurations.
Note:

Chapter 1. The Self Checkout System 17

• Right Bagger configurations, the flow of item processing is from left to right.
• Left Bagger configurations, the flow of item processing is from right to left.
The figures in this publication show right bagger configurations. See Figure 4 for an example of
a left bagger configuration of a Model 110 self checkout system.

Figure 4. Example of a left bagger configured system

The sections that follow describe the different models that are available.

Model 1K0
The 1K0 Model is a kiosk, and offers the retailer self checkout systems with a small footprint and
without a scanner/scale, bagging or cash handling, or conveyor units. This model does not
provide weight-based security.

Back Office System Server (BOSS)

The BOSS shares information with all the Toshiba self checkout lanes installed in a store. It
maintains the item security information in a database as well as shopper assistant card
privileges. The BOSS also records operating information and produces system reports. It
contains the server application for the mobile terminal.
As an optional feature, Toshiba can remotely connect to the BOSS computer to update Self
Checkout System software, troubleshoot and correct reported Self Checkout System problems,
gather critical error log files (extracts), and retrieve Self Checkout System performance
information.

Mobile terminal
Toshiba does not supply a handheld mobile terminal device. The device is available from the
manufacturer, Motorola, Inc. ([Link]). Toshiba provides software, troubleshooting
procedures, and website links to assist you in using a mobile terminal with Toshiba self checkout
lanes. Contact your Toshiba representative for detailed information.
The mobile terminal is a handheld wireless device that you can use to monitor and control
selected functions of the self checkout lanes. Transaction status information is displayed in real
time on the mobile terminal as the shopper's order is being processed. An authorized shopper
assistant can monitor each self checkout lane and control selected functions from anywhere in
the store within the range of the wireless network. Figure 13 shows a generic mobile terminal.

Chapter 1. The Self Checkout System 27

Figure 13. Mobile terminal

The mobile terminal can monitor multiple self checkout lanes. An authorized shopper assistant
can be assigned for each mobile terminal. The mobile terminal enables the shopper assistant to
resolve some issues requiring store intervention without being present at the lane.
The shopper assistant can use the mobile terminal to add oversized items to a shopper order, to
list the items that a shopper purchases, and to assist multiple shoppers without having to travel
from lane to lane. The ability of a shopper assistant to assist multiple shoppers without having to
travel from lane to lane can reduce the time a shopper waits for assistance.
The mobile terminal:
• Uses wireless communication with the self checkout lanes.
• Provides security that allows only authorized users to sign on to a mobile terminal.
• Displays relevant status information for connected self checkout lanes that are assigned to
that mobile terminal.
• Requires the user to acknowledge various informational messages pertaining to specific self
checkout lanes.
• Allows the shopper assistant to use the bar code scanner integrated with the mobile terminal
to add single or multiple items to a new or open transaction on assigned self checkout lanes.
To add items to an order, the order must be open on the self checkout lane. Items cannot be
added to orders with the mobile terminal after the order has been retrieved at the shopper
assistant cabinet.
The mobile terminal notification consists of a distinctive audio tone and a visual display icon
that appears in the Lane Status display. Only assigned mobile terminals receive the notification.
Note: The retailer is responsible for the overall security of the wireless local area network
(WLAN) for the mobile terminal, including electronic eavesdropping safeguards.

Shopper assistant cabinet

The shopper assistant cabinet typically contains a terminal that operates like a conventional lane
without a conveyor or bagging area. A shopper assistant can use the shopper assistant cabinet's
terminal to assist self checkout shoppers who choose a payment option not offered at the self
checkout lane. The shopper assistant can retrieve transactions that are suspended at the self
checkout lane by scanning the bar code on the receipt from the suspended transaction. A

28 Models 1x0 Overview

shopper assistant cabinet that is detached from the lane is available as an option for use with all
self checkout lane models.

Scale management system

The scale management system contains pricing data for items sold by weight. The Self Checkout
System can interface with your scale management system, but Toshiba does not provide support
for the scale management system.
The scale management system used with the Self Checkout System is not a Toshiba product. See
the information provided by your scale manufacturer for more information.
The scale file is used primarily with pre-labeled Type 2 items such as meats or deli items to
calculate a unit price for comparison with the unit price in the security record for the item. If the
unit price calculated by dividing the pre-labeled price with the item's weight does not match the
unit price in the security record, the item is rejected. It is the responsibility of the retailer to send
scale files to the BOSS for processing.

Chapter 3. Model 100 and 110 item processing overview
Model 100 and 110 item processing overview

When a shopper scans an item, selects a Quick Lookup item, or keys in an item code, the self
checkout system sends the bar code or item ID to the point of sale (POS) system. The POS system
adds the item to the order, rejects it (for example, if it is not on file), or asks for more information
(for example, weight or quantity). If the item is added to the order, a price and description are
returned to the self checkout system. The security database is queried for the item's security
record. After the record is retrieved, the self checkout system uses the item type entry in the
security record to determine how to continue processing the item.
The scan and bag models require shoppers to place most items in the bagging area, but some
items are too large or heavy to fit in the bagging area. The scan and bag models check the item
security record in the security database to determine whether the shopper must place the item in
the bagging area or should not place it in the bagging area (a pass-around item). The system uses
this information to instruct the shopper on how to handle the item.
For an item that must be placed in the bagging area, or for an optional pass-around item that is
placed in the bagging area, the incremental weight in the bagging area is compared against the
minimum and maximum weight ranges for the item in the item security record. If the measured
weight falls within the range, the item passes the item security check; if not, the scan and bag
models ask the shopper to place the correct item in the bagging area. When a weight error is
corrected, the item purchase is complete. If the error is not corrected, the system instructs the
shopper to get assistance from the shopper assistant.
While weight validation is taking place, the self checkout system receives the item price and
description from the POS system. The self checkout system processes the information and
updates the electronic receipt.
After an item is scanned, the scanner is deactivated to prevent the shopper from accidentally
scanning the item twice. The scanner is reactivated when the item is placed in the bagging area
or after a predefined amount of time for an optional pass-around item. If an item that must be
placed in the bagging area is not placed in the bagging area, the system does not void the item
and does not remove the item from the receipt.

Chapter 4. Communication between the BOSS and a Self
Checkout system
Communication between the BOSS and a Self Checkout system

For software Version 7, the Remote Management Agent (RMA) Master Agent (MA) and DB2 are
used for communication between the BOSS and a self checkout system. While running, the RMA
MA is in constant communication with the RMA General Agent (GA) on each system, using
TCP/IP.

Information transmitted between BOSS and lane

The following list contains the types of information that are transmitted between the BOSS and
the lanes, as well as the methods of transfer for the different Self Checkout System software
versions.
• Transaction information: Every time an item, coupon, card, payment, or void is scanned or
performed or a security event (such as an item being processed not passing the weight-based
security check) occurs at the lane, a record is created and sent to the BOSS. The record is sent
to both the history and security databases for updating.
For software Version 7.1and later, this information is sent directly from the lanes to the BOSS
