UIT-RGPV (Autonomous) Bhopal

Department of Petrochemical Engineering

Subject In-charge: Prof. Mehtab Singh Chouhan

Semester: III
Subject code – PC 302 Subject: Chemical Process Calculation

Assignment no 2 (date:28.09.2020)
Submission date (01.10.2020)

1. An aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide contains 20% NaOH by mass. It is desired to

produce an 8.0% NaOH solution by diluting a stream of the 20% solution with a stream of
pure water. Calculate the ratios (liters H2o needed/kg feed solution) and (kg product
solution/ kg feed solution).
2. A simplified flowsheet for the manufacture of sugar is shown in Fig. Sugarcane is fed to a
mill where a syrup is squeezed out, and the resulting "bagasse" contains 80% pulp. The
syrup (E) containing finely divided pieces of pulp is fed to a screen which removes all the
pulp and produces a clear syrup (H) containing 15% sugar and 85% water. The evaporator
makes a "heavy" syrup and the crystallizer produces 1000 lb/hr of sugar crystals.
a) Find the water removed in the evaporator, lb/hr.
b) Find the composition of the waste stream G.
c) Find the rate of feed of cane to the unit, lb/hr.
d) Of the sugar fed in the cane, what percentage is lost with the bagasse?

3. An aqueous solution of sodium chloride is prepared by dissolving 30 kg of NaCl in 70 kg of

water. Calculate mole% composition of solution.
4. Spent acid from a fertilizer plant has the following composition by weight.
H2SO4 = 20%
NH4HSO4 = 45%
H2O = 30%
Organic compound = 05%
Calculate the total acid content of the spent acid in terms of H 2SO4 after adding the acid
content chemically bound in ammonium hydrogen sulphate.
5. Calculate the volume occupied by 1 gmol of water vapour at 900 °C and 100 atm.
(i) By perfect gas law
(ii) By using Vander Waals equations.
The Vander Waals constant for water are

6. In a vessel, 28.5 litres of NO2 at 0.789 atm and 298 K is allowed to stand until the
equilibrium is reached. At equilibrium, the pressure is found to be 0.657 atm. Calculate the
partial pressure of N2O4 in the final mixture.
7. A solution of CaCl2 in water contains 80 kg of CaCl 2 per 100 kg of water. Calculate the
weight of this solution necessary to dissolve 300 kg of CaCl2 .6H2O at 25°C.

8. Milk powder is produced in a spray dryer which evaporates all of liquid (H 2O). The
operation is shown in figure below.

Assuming inlet air contains no water. Calculate:

(i) Production rate of powdered milk
(ii) Molal flow rate of the inlet air.
