Chapter 4

grabs her shoulder.

Chapter 5
• The locust who grabbed Ettie’s shoulder at the boom
gave her her tube of cream that she dropped. We can
deduce that this is the same Locust that also helped
her on the beach in Chapter 1, because it is so unusual
for a Locust to help a Slum City resident.
• We learn that the relationship between Kitty and Ettie
has changed a lot. Kitty used to cling to Ettie for
comfort and now she is harsh with her.
Chapter 5
• Ettie goes on a game with Handler Xavier to Mangeria
City where she is disguised as a Posh.
• She meets Nicolas and they seem to like each other,
but Ettie realises that he will only speak to her because
he thinks she is a Posh, so she runs away.
• The cream that Ettie applied to her spine has not
been effective. The number is still there.

Chapter 6
• Ettie and Kitty head to the annual fate mates festival.
• n Ettie’s world, people are not allowed to choose their partners.
• As with their jobs, young people are assigned their partners at the age of 16 in the fate-
mate ceremony.
• At the festival, during the ceremony, one boy tries to protest and reject his assigned fate
mate, because he is already in love with another girl who is pregnant with his child. The
boy and the girl are captured and taken away.
• Kitty sees Nicolas again and they make plans to meet at the Tree Museum on Sunday.
Chapter 7
• Ettie and Kitty awake to chaos. The market is burning and there is a riot.
• Kitty and Ettie take advantage of the opportunity to try and steal things from the stalls in the
chaos.
• Ettie sees the Locusts arrest on of the arsonists. While he is being beaten up by the Locusts,
his shirt shifts off his back and Ettie sees that he does not have a number on his spine.
• The rioters have also set fire to the Tree Museum and Ettie is devastated.
• We learn that Kitty and Ettie once survived a fire in the orphanage. Kitty saved Ettie’s life.
• When the chaos of the riot dies down, Ettie sees Nelson (the man who played games
with Witch) acting suspiciously.
