Let the fraction be x/y. According to the problem, x/(y + 4) = 1/2 and (x - 5)/y = 1/8. Solving these equations: from the first equation, 2x = y + 4. From the second, 8(x - 5) = y. Substituting y = 2x - 4 into the second equation gives 8(x - 5) = 2x - 4, which simplifies to 8x - 40 = 2x - 4. Solving for x gives x = 6, and substituting back gives y = 2(6) - 4 = 8. Therefore, the fraction is 6/8 or 3/4 in simplest terms .

Let the two numbers be x and y. According to the problem, x + y = 2 and x - y = 20. Solving these equations simultaneously, we add the two equations to get 2x = 22, leading to x = 11. Substituting x = 11 back into the first equation, we get y = -9. Therefore, the numbers are 11 and -9 .

Let the speed of the boat in still water be b km/h and the speed of the stream be s km/h. Downstream, the effective speed is b + s and upstream is b - s. From the problem, 40/(b + s) = 2 and 40/(b - s) = 4. These give b + s = 20 and b - s = 10. Solving these equations simultaneously, b = 15 and s = 5. Therefore, the speed of the boat in still water is 15 km/h and the speed of the stream is 5 km/h .

Let n be the number of total students, r be the number of rows, and s be the number of students per row originally. Then, n = rs. Adding a student per row gives n = (r - 2)(s + 1), and removing a student per row gives n = (r + 3)(s - 1). Solve these equations: from rs = (r - 2)(s + 1), simplify to 2s - r = 2; from rs = (r + 3)(s - 1), simplify to 3s - r = 3. Solving these, s = 5, r = 8, giving n = 40 students .

Let the two numbers be 2x and 3x, based on their ratio 2:3. According to the problem, (2x - 2) / (3x - 8) = 3/2, which is the reciprocal of 2/3. Cross-multiplying gives 4x - 4 = 9x - 24, leading to 5x = 20 and x = 4. Thus, the numbers are 8 and 12 .

Let x be the cost of 1 kg of sugar and y be the cost of 1 kg of rice. From the problem, we have the equations 5x + 7y = 153 and 7x + 5y = 147. Solving these equations simultaneously: multiply the first equation by 7 and the second by 5 to eliminate y, resulting in 35x + 49y = 1071 and 35x + 25y = 735. Subtract these equations to get 24y = 336, so y = 14. Substituting y = 14 into the first equation, 5x + 98 = 153, gives x = 11. Now, 6 kg of sugar and 10 kg of rice costs 6x + 10y = 6(11) + 10(14) = 66 + 140 = 206. Therefore, the cost is Rs 206 .

Let the cost price of the table be T and the list price of the chair be C. The given conditions are 1.08T + 0.90C = 1008 and 1.10T + 0.92C = 1028. Solve these equations simultaneously by multiplying the first equation by 0.92 and the second by 0.90 to eliminate C: 0.9936T + 0.828C = 928.32 and 0.99T + 0.828C = 925.2. Subtracting the second equation from the first gives 0.0036T = 3.12, leading to T = 866.67. Substitute T back to find C: 1.08(866.67) + 0.90C = 1008, solving gives C = 560. Therefore, the cost price of the table is Rs 866.67 and the list price of the chair is Rs 560 .

Let the rate of work done by a man be m and by a woman be w. According to the problem, (2m + 5w) × 4 = 1 whole work and (m + w) × 12 = 1 whole work. The equations are 2m + 5w = 0.25 and m + w = 0.0833. Solving these simultaneously, we find that m = 0.05 and w = 0.0333. Therefore, the time taken by one man to complete the work alone is 1/0.05 = 20 days .

Let x be the number of 20 paise coins and y be the number of 25 paise coins. The equations based on the problem are x + y = 38 and 0.2x + 0.25y = 8.50. Multiplying the second equation by 100 for simplicity, we have 20x + 25y = 850. Solving these equations: from x + y = 38, express y = 38 - x and substitute into 20x + 25(38 - x) = 850, leading to 20x + 950 - 25x = 850. Simplifying, we find x = 20 and y = 18. Therefore, there are 20 coins of 20 paise and 18 coins of 25 paise .

Let the current age of the daughter be x years and the mother's be y years. Based on the problem, four years ago the mother's age was 3 times the daughter's age, forming the equation y - 4 = 3(x - 4). Simplified, y - 4 = 3x - 12, which results in y = 3x - 8. Six years from now, the mother will be twice as old as the daughter, resulting in y + 6 = 2(x + 6). Simplifying, we find y = 2x + 6. Solving these two equations simultaneously, y = 3x - 8 and y = 2x + 6, gives x = 14 and y = 34. Therefore, the daughter is 14 years old and the mother is 34 years old .
