Advice for freshman

a. If you were to write an abstract for a technical paper I would advise you to limit

the abstract to a paragraph consisting of around 100-300 words. The first few

sentences of your abstract should introduce the topic, then the next few sentences

should talk about the methodology, how the experiment was conducted, and what

the key findings are. Lastly your abstract should conclude with a brief decision of

your results, such as the possible future implications of the research. Overall, an

abstract briefly summarizes the entirety of your paper.

2. How long is each abstract? How many words? How many sentences?

a. Abstracts are typically a paragraph long ranging from 150 to 300 words.

b. Article 1: Approximately 225 words, 10 sentences.

c. Article 2: Approximately 200 words, 9 sentences.

d. Article 3: Approximately 230 words, 11 sentences.

3. How does each sentence correspond to a section in the report (Introduction,

Methodology, Results, Discussion, or others)?

a. The first few sentences introduce the topic and its significance. One to two

sentences describe the methodology. A few sentences summarize the key

findings, and the final sentences talk about the study’s impact and the conclusions

drawn from the study.

4. Is an abstract an introduction to a report or does it actually give the results, too?

a. An abstract is more than just an introduction. It provides a brief summary of the

background, methods, results, and the conclusion of a paper.
