Teaching Animal Cell Anatomy with TPACK

The document outlines a lesson plan for teaching the anatomy and function of animal cells using the TPACK framework. It includes an overview of cell components, a group activity for diagramming and presenting the cell, and a practical observation of cells under a microscope to enhance understanding. The approach aims to foster engagement, public speaking skills, and retention of knowledge among students.

UNIT 2-Lesson 1- TPACK

TASK 1: Application of the TPACK Framework

1. Overview of the animal cell anatomy and its function.

As the teacher, I will discuss the anatomy of animal cells with precision,
knowing that I am also a graduate student in the field of science education. I
will teach the students what are the different parts of the animal cell, the
function of each part, and how they contribute to the cell as a whole. Such as
the nucleus that bears the genetic information of the animal as well as the
mitochondria, where ATP is being made through a process of cellular
respiration. The importance of ribosomes in protein synthesis as well as the
Golgi apparatus that is responsible for the storing and transporting of
nutrients. These are just some of the key components in an animal cell, and
they will be further expounded in the discussion.

2. Pedagogy of the teaching the animal cells anatomy.

After the basic discussion and introduction of the anatomy of the animal
cells, I will then group them for a group work where they must make a
diagram of the cell and identify its function and why it is an essential part of
its anatomy. They will then present it in front of the class in various ways,
such as a drawing or a written report, so they can master their public
speaking skills as well as retain as much knowledge about the different parts
of the animal cells and their function. After the group activity, there will be a
quiz to examine the extent of their newly acquired schema and observe
where we can start by improving the discussion for them to understand it
better.

3. Microscopic view of the animal cell.

In the field of science, practical experiences are essential. Students will

observe the animal’s cells through the microscope, and this will be done in a
group, but their output must be individually passed. They must write their
observation on one whole sheet of paper and what process of the animal cell
they have observed with the microscope. Through the integration of the
microscope in observing the real animal cells, it makes the content more
interactive and understandable to the students. This will lay the groundwork
for their curiosity in the process of creating life.

Visual aids and presentations facilitate a better understanding of complex structures by providing clear, illustrative views that complement verbal explanations . These techniques cater to different learning styles, engage students more effectively, and aid in memory retention, making the learning experience more comprehensive and interactive .

Quizzes test students' retention and understanding of animal cell anatomy by encouraging recall and application of the learned material . They provide immediate feedback to educators, helping identify areas where students struggle or excel, thus informing future instructional adjustments to improve comprehension .

Mitochondria are referred to as the powerhouse of the cell because they generate ATP through cellular respiration, which provides energy necessary for various cellular activities . This energy production is crucial for maintaining cell function and supporting processes such as movement, growth, and division .

The Golgi apparatus plays a critical role in modifying, sorting, and packaging proteins and lipids for transport within or outside the cell . Its ability to manage cellular products is vital for maintaining cell functionality and supporting processes like secretion and membrane composition .

Group activities, such as creating diagrams and presentations, encourage collaborative learning and critical thinking, allowing students to engage with the material actively . By requiring students to explain and discuss cell functions collectively, they solidify their understanding and enhance their communication and public speaking skills .

Microscopic observation of animal cells exposes students to the intricacies of cellular structures, sparking curiosity and prompting questions that lead to deeper scientific inquiry . This method encourages students to explore beyond textbook knowledge, engaging them in the scientific process and fostering a hands-on understanding of life sciences .

Ribosomes are essential for protein synthesis, translating genetic code into proteins necessary for various cellular functions . Their role in assembling amino acids into functional proteins supports critical cellular operations such as enzyme activity, structural integrity, and signaling pathways .

The nucleus in an animal cell contains the genetic information necessary for directing all cellular activities, acting as the control center . It plays a crucial role in regulating processes such as cell growth, metabolism, and reproduction, making it an essential component of the cell's function .

Integrating practical experiences such as microscopy allows students to observe the real structures of animal cells, making the content more interactive and tangible . This hands-on approach engages students actively, enhancing understanding and retention of information about the cell's anatomy and functions, thereby bridging theoretical knowledge with practical observation .

Pedagogical approaches such as interactive group activities, hands-on laboratory work, and varied presentation methods help students retain detailed knowledge . These methods combine active participation with theoretical learning, facilitating higher engagement and better retention by connecting abstract concepts with practical experience .
