Tutorial 7: MM 406: Partial Differential Equations

1. Show that the following system of partial differential equations are compatible and hence solve
them:-
(a) p = ax + hy + g and q = hx + by + f
∂z ∂z
(b) = y(2ax + by) and = x(ax + 2by)
∂x ∂y
(c) p = x4 − 2xy 2 + y 4 and q = 4xy 3 − 2x2 y − sin y
(d) z − px − qy = 0 and 2xy(p2 + q 2 ) = z(yp + xq)
2. Check the compatibility of the following differential equations:-
(a) p = 7x − 8y + 1 = 0 and q − 9x − 11y + 2 = 0
(b) p − 6x + 4y − 1 = 0 and q = 4x + 6y + 1
3. Find the complete integral of the following equations using Charpit’s method:-

(e) z 2 p2 + q 2 = x2 + e2y

(a) z = px + qy + pq
(b) pq = xz (f) p2 − y 2 q = x2 − y 2
(c) (p + q) (z − px − qy) = 1 (g) yp = 2xy + log q
(d) q = px + q 2 (h) 2 (y + zq) = q (xp + yq)
