Science Notes
Unit 1- Photosynthesis
Plants prepare their food by a process called “Photosynthesis”.
Photosynthesis- Photo (Light) and Synthesis (Making)
Plants need sunlight, carbon dioxide from the air, and water from the soil to
prepare their food.
Photosynthesis takes place in the leaf of the plant.
Leaves have tiny pores called stomata through which CO2 enters the plant.
Plant cells contain tiny structures called chloroplasts that contain chlorophyll.
6CO2 + 6H20 Sunlight
C6H12O6 + 602
Chlorophyll
(Carbon Dioxide) (Water) (Glucose) (Oxygen)
Oxygen then leaves the plant through stomata.
Glucose nourishes the plant.
The extra glucose produced in the plant is stored as starch and used later.
The carbon dioxide and the water are used for photosynthesis.
Function of roots-
1. Roots help anchor the plant firmly in the ground
2. Roots absorb water and other minerals from the soil
3. Roots help store extra food made by a plant
A leaf is green due to the presence of chlorophyll.
A leaf helps to absorb sunlight, water, and air.
Unit 2- Food and Digestion
There are 4 parts of Digestion-
1. Ingestion- Intake of food
2. Digestion- Breaking down of food
3. Absorption- Delivering nutrients to the body.
4. Elimination- Excreta, things that cannot be absorbed.
Digestion, in humans, starts from the mouth. The food is taken from the mouth
and broken down into bolus by saliva and the teeth.
Saliva has enzymes and is a counteract to acidity, which prevents tooth
decay.
The bolus travels down the esophagus. There is a flap in the esophagus
preventing the bolus from getting into the windpipe. This flap is called the
“epiglottis”.
Peristalsis, which is a wave-like movement made by the muscles happens in
the esophagus.
Peristalsis helps to move the bolus down into the stomach.
An adult stomach can store up to 2 liters of food and water.
Enzymes such as HCL (Hydrochloric Acids) and Pepsin are in the stomach.
The resulting substance after the churning process, is known as chyme.
