Chapter I
INTRODUCTION
Rationale
Small-scale processing equipment played a crucial role in rural and
agricultural communities, where affordable, efficient, and portable machinery was
essential. The mini hammer mill was proposed to address these needs. Designed
to be compact and easy to use, it was especially valuable in areas with limited
access to advanced technology. Hammer mills were commonly used to grind raw
materials like grains into finer particles for feed or other purposes (Liu et al., 2019).
However, most existing designs were bulky, consumed a lot of power, and required
skilled operators, making them less accessible to small farmers and micro-
businesses.
This new design focused on being lightweight, energy-efficient, and simple
to operate. By manufacturing this mini hammer mill, communities could benefit
from increased productivity and reduced labor demands. The project also
supported sustainable development by encouraging small-scale industries to grow
and thrive (United Nations, 2015).
The absence of affordable and efficient size-reduction tools in resource-
constrained settings limited the processing capabilities of small-scale producers.
Existing machinery often demanded significant capital investment and
infrastructure, which many small-scale operators could not afford (Khurmi &
Gupta, 2005). Consequently, there was a need for a locally-fabricated, portable
hammer mill that balanced cost, efficiency, and durability.
Objectives of the Study
This study aimed to:
a) Design and fabricate a mini hammer mill tailored for small-scale
operations.
b) Evaluate the portability and usability of the proposed machinery in a
rural or micro-enterprise context.
c) Assess the cost efficiency and performance of the mini hammer mill
compared to existing alternatives.
Significance of the Study
The mini hammer mill served as a practical solution for agricultural waste
management, feed preparation, and other related applications. By addressing the
specific needs of small-scale users, the machinery could have facilitated economic
empowerment and resource efficiency. Moreover, the adoption of stainless steel
materials ensured durability and long-term functionality, providing an economical
yet robust solution (Rosentrater & Evers, 2018)
In addition, the proposed Mini Hammer Mill contributed to agricultural and
industrial advancements by offering a scalable solution to material processing
challenges. It provided rural communities and small businesses with access to
affordable, efficient, and durable machinery. This study aligned with sustainable
development goals by promoting resource efficiency, reducing post-harvest losses,
and empowering local entrepreneurs (UNDP, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The project focused on designing, fabricating, and testing the mini hammer
mill for small-scale applications. However, challenges arose from limited funds,
technical difficulties during fabrication, and testing the machine in only a few
practical scenarios.
