Project Name: Turning waste into money and raw materials

Project Category:

Outline the real-life engineering problem that your project intends to solve? Why is the
problem significant? (200 Words)

Plastic waste, particularly from single-use water bottles, is a major environmental concern.
Millions of plastic bottles are discarded daily, contributing to pollution, harming marine life,
and overwhelming landfills. Our project addresses this issue by promoting plastic recycling
and encouraging reusable water bottles through a deposit-return system.

One approach involves implementing efficient recycling mechanisms for used plastic bottles,
ensuring they are processed into new materials instead of polluting the environment. Advanced
sorting, shredding, and repurposing techniques can maximize recycling efficiency.
Another approach focuses on reducing plastic consumption altogether. By introducing a deposit
system where consumers pay a small additional fee when purchasing bottled water refundable
upon returning the bottle people will be incentivized to return used bottles or switch to reusable
ones. This strategy significantly reduces plastic waste at the source.

The significance of this problem lies in its environmental, economic, and social impacts. Plastic
pollution affects ecosystems, contributes to climate change, and requires costly waste
management. Encouraging recycling and reuse can reduce environmental damage, conserve
resources, and promote sustainable habits. By tackling this issue, our project aims to create a
cleaner environment, reduce plastic dependency, and encourage responsible consumer
behaviour.

Please provide a description of the technology, tools or method used in building the
solution. (100 Words)

Our solution is inspired by Germany’s Pfand (deposit refund) system, which has successfully
reduced plastic waste. This system involves Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) that are used
to collect used plastic bottles, scan barcodes to verify recyclability, and dispense refunds. The
bottles are then sent for mechanical recycling, where they are cleaned, shredded, and
processed into new plastic products.

Additionally, the project promotes reusable bottles by implementing deposit incentives at

retail points. Technologies such as RFID tagging can track bottle usage, ensuring efficient
returns. By leveraging AI-based sorting systems and automated recycling plants, we
enhance efficiency and sustainability in waste management.
Provide an abstract of the proposed solution, and how will it help in solving the above
problem? (500 Words)

Plastic waste, particularly from single-use water bottles, poses a significant environmental
threat worldwide. Millions of plastic bottles are discarded daily, contributing to land and marine
pollution, increasing carbon emissions, and straining waste management systems. Our project
aims to tackle this problem by implementing a deposit-refund system (DRS) inspired by
Germany’s successful Pfand system and leveraging Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs),
automated sorting technologies, and mechanical recycling processes.

The core of our solution is a two-pronged approach: (1) encouraging plastic recycling through
an automated collection and refund system, and (2) promoting reusable water bottles by adding
a financial incentive to reduce single-use plastic consumption.

Proposed Solution

1. Deposit-Refund System (DRS) & Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs)

Our system involves placing reverse vending machines (RVMs) in public areas, retail stores,
and transportation hubs. Consumers pay a small deposit when purchasing bottled water, which
is refunded upon returning the empty bottle to an RVM. The machine scans the barcode, verifies
recyclability, and sorts the bottle accordingly. The collected bottles are then processed through
a mechanical recycling system, where they are cleaned, shredded, melted, and reformed into
new plastic products or bottles.

2. Promoting Reusable Bottles

To further decrease plastic use, our project encourages individuals to carry their own reusable
bottles. As the customers have to pay a deposit amount every time, they purchase a plastic
water bottle. So instead of which they can bring their own water bottle and it can even be
encouraged by giving access to water sources to people by various methods like RO plants and
etc.

How This Solution Addresses the Problem

1. Reduces Plastic Pollution: By incentivizing the return of plastic bottles, we ensure

fewer bottles end up in landfills and oceans, reducing environmental harm. Germany’s
Pfand system has achieved over 97% recycling rates, proving its effectiveness.

2. Encourages Responsible Consumer Behaviour: Financial incentives influence

consumer choices. When people realize they can save money by using reusable bottles
or returning plastic bottles, they are more likely to adopt sustainable habits.

3. Improves Recycling Efficiency: The use of AI-powered sorting and automated

recycling plants ensures that plastic waste is processed efficiently, reducing
contamination and improving the quality of recycled materials.
4. Economic and Social Benefits: Implementing such a system creates jobs in the
recycling industry, boosts the circular economy, and reduces the cost of waste
management. Additionally, brands can enhance their sustainability image, attracting
eco-conscious consumers.
By integrating a deposit-refund system, reverse vending machines, and recycling
technologies, our project provides a scalable, cost-effective, and sustainable solution to plastic
waste. Encouraging the use of reusable bottles further ensures long-term environmental
benefits. Drawing from Germany’s success, our approach can significantly reduce plastic
pollution, promote sustainable behaviour, and contribute to a cleaner, greener future.

Please highlight the top 3 expected benefits of the Product / Solution for the end user. Who
are your primary beneficiaries? (200 Words)
1. Financial Incentives & Cost Savings: Consumers will receive a monetary refund for
returning plastic bottles, making recycling a financially rewarding habit. Additionally,
those using reusable water bottles can save money by avoiding deposit fees on
disposable bottles. This creates a win-win situation where users either get their deposit
back or reduce their overall spending by switching to sustainable alternatives.

2. Convenience & Accessibility: The reverse vending machines (RVMs) will be placed in
easily accessible locations such as supermarkets, public spaces, and transportation
hubs. The system will be quick and hassle-free, encouraging users to participate without
disrupting their daily routines. This ensures that recycling is both effortless and
rewarding for individuals.

3. Environmental Impact & Sustainable Living: By participating in this system,

consumers directly contribute to reducing plastic pollution and promoting a cleaner
environment. The initiative helps lower carbon footprints, conserve resources, and
reduce landfill waste, allowing users to take part in a larger movement toward
sustainability.

Primary Beneficiaries

1. Consumers – Individuals benefit financially and contribute to sustainability.

2. Retailers & Businesses – Encourages eco-conscious branding and customer

engagement.

3. Municipalities & Governments – Reduces waste management costs and environmental

damage.

How much time have you and your team members spent in building the solution (in
hours)? What roles do different team members play? (50 Words)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can your idea be improved or scaled further? What are the next steps if given an
opportunity to scale it further? (100 Words)

Our solution can be expanded globally by integrating smart recycling bins equipped with AI-
powered sorting to enhance efficiency. Additionally, mobile apps can be developed to track
returns, offer digital refunds, and incentivize users with rewards.

To scale further, collaborations with beverage companies and government policies can help
implement standardized deposit-refund systems (DRS) nationwide. Expanding to collect other
recyclables like aluminium cans can increase impact.

Next Steps

1. Pilot program in urban areas to test effectiveness.

2. Partnerships with retailers & recycling companies for infrastructure.

3. Legislative support to implement DRS at a larger scale.
