Basic Mitten Pattern for Beginners

Materials:
Size US6 DPNs,
Yarn used: Worsted Weight Yarn: Yarn Bee, Yarn ID. Color: Oats
Gauge: 4”x4” = 17 stitches, 27 rows in stockinette stitch
Size: Womens (Mens)
Abbreviations:
K: Knit
P: Purl
DPN: Double Pointed Needle
Sts: Stitches
PM: Place Marker
SM: Slip Marker
Rnd(s): Round(s)
M1R: Make one right (increase)
M1L: Make one left (increase)
K2tog: Knit two together (decrease)

Pattern:
Cuff:
With size US 6 dpns, cast on 32 (40) stitches. Distribute stitches to 3 DPNs, join in the round.
Rnd 1: *K1, P1* repeat to end of Rnd
Repeat Rnd 1 for 15 Rnds
Rnd 2: Knit all stitches
Repeat Rnd 2 for 6 (8) rounds
Thumb Gusset:
Right Hand Left Hand
Set Up Rnd: K2, PM, Set up Rnd: K to last 5 sts, PM,
K3, PM, K to end of Rnd K3, PM, K to end of Rnd
Rnd 1: K to marker, SM, M1R, K to marker, M1L, SM, K to end of Rnd
Rnd 2: Knit all
Rnd 3: Knit all
Repeat Rnds 1-3 three (four) more times till 11 (13) sts are between markers
Knit to marker, remove marker, place 11 (13) sts onto stitch holder or scrap yarn, cast on 5 sts
using backward loop and knit to end of round. (34 (42) stitches total)
Hand
Knit for 22 (26) rounds (or till it reaches just past the tip of your pinky finger when wearing).
Tip: Be sure to count your rounds so you know how many rounds to knit for the 2 nd mitten.
Decrease Rounds:
Set Up: K17 (K21), PM, K17 (K21)
Rnd 1: K2tog, K to 3 sts before marker, SSK, K1, SM, K2tog, K to 3 sts to end, SSK, K1
(4 st decrease)
Rnd 2: Knit all
Rnd 3: Repeat Rnd 1

10 (10) stiches remain
Break yarn, with darning needle thread yarn and draw through remaining stitches, pull tight to
close. Push needle through hole to inside, secure by threading again through last few stitches.
Weave in end.
Thumb:
Put 5 sts from CO edge inside of thumb onto 1 DPN.
Divide held sts between two other DPNs.
With new working yarn, start round beginning with CO sts. Join in the round. (16 (18) stitches)
Knit in the round for 15 (17) rounds or until it reaches just past the thumb when worn. Tip: Be
sure to count your rounds so you know how many rounds to knit for the 2 nd mitten.
K2tog (8 (9) stitches remain)
Break yarn and with darning needle draw through remaining stitches, pull to close. Push needle
through hole to inside.
When weaving in ends, take the tail from the start of the thumb and stitch to close up the two
gaps at the base of the thumb.
Weave in all other ends.
