1. PARAGRAPH 1 : Introduction :
Paraphrase question sentences. There will normally be two question sentences and you should
combine them into one sentence by using ‘and’ or ‘while’. This will allow you to produce a complex
sentence and gain points for grammatical range and accuracy.
The pie graph displays the principal causes why farming land deteriorates while the table illustrates how three
regions of the planet were affected by these factors in the 1990s.

We can clearly see from the pie chart that there are three primary causes of farmland degradation, and
over-grazing is the major one. The table shows that Europe had a far higher percentage of unproductive
land compared to the other two regions in this time period.

The pie chart represents four causes, with over-grazing representing the biggest proportion at just over a
third. Widespread clearing of trees and the over-use of crops constitute nearly one third and just over a

The table shows that nearly one quarter of Europe’s entire surface had fallen victim to degeneration. Only a
small proportion of North America’s total land became less productive at 5% and Oceania was marginally
higher with a value of 13%.

The following model answer has been divided into sentences (A-G). Put them in the correct order.
A) In terms of the source of fish importation, Canada supplied the overwhelming majoritv in 1988 (60%)
compared to China and other countries which provided only 13% and 27% respectively.
B) Regarding the table, the value of imports started at $6.57 billion in the first year, increasing to $8.52 in
1992 and reaching $10.72 in the last year.
C) Overall, the value of imports rose by almost double over the period given.
D) Us imports from Canada fell over the period bv just over a half to 28% as opposed to China that
witnessed an increase to 30% in 2000.
E) At the start of the period, the US imported fish predominantly from Canada but, by the final year, other
countries had become the main source.
F) The table shows the value of fish that was imported to the US (measured in billions of dollars) in
1988,1992 and 2000, while the three pie charts illustrate the amount of fish that the US brought in from
China, Canada and other countries in the same three years.
G) By 1992, other countries had replaced Canada as the main supplier and made up 46% of all imports in
1992 and 42% by 2000.
2. PRACTICE 2:
The graph and table below give information about water use worldwide and water consumption in
two different countries. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and
make comparisons where relevant.
The charts compare the amount of water used for agriculture, industry and homes around the world, and
water use in Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It is clear that global water needs rose significantly between 1900 and 2000, and that agriculture accounted
for the largest proportion of water used. We can also see that water consumption was considerably higher in
Brazil than in the Congo.
In 1900, around 500km³ of water was used by the agriculture sector worldwide. The figures for industrial
and domestic water consumption stood at around one fifth of that amount. By 2000, global water use for
agriculture had increased to around 3000km³, industrial water use had risen to just under half that amount,
and domestic consumption had reached approximately 500km³.
In the year 2000, the populations of Brazil and the Congo were 176 million and 5.2 million respectively.
Water consumption per person in Brazil, at 359m³, was much higher than that in the Congo, at only 8m³,
and this could be explained by the fact that Brazil had 265 times more irrigated land.
