What are tithes?
Is it applicable?
● The tithe is often misunderstood
○ Some Christians believe the tithe is a legalistic rule for the Old Testament

○ Others believe tithing is a qualification for being a Christian and failure to
tithe will result in God’s expelling us from our relationship with Him
○ Neither is correct
○ The tithe has always been an outside testimony of heart attitude

Why did Abraham pay tithes?
● Abraham paid tithes because he recognized that there was an authority greater than
he
○ He was a person (Abraham) with much responsibility, much power, and riches
○ He recognized that Melchizedek, by virtue of his divine office, had greater
responsibility in the administration of spiritual things
● He gave his tithe in recognition that God had helped him in a time of need; God had
helped him win the battle
○ He gave his tithes voluntarily in fulfillment to a Divine obligation
○ The Bible also declare that we are Sons of Abraham

What does the New Testament say about tithing?

● Jesus made sure to state the importance of fulfilling financial obligations
○ He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

Warning to them that do not pay their tithes and the
blessings to those that do:
● Turning to the Old Testament, we can see that tithing simply reflects the heart’s
attitude
○ Let’s see what God equates withholding the tithe:
● God accused the Jewish people of being thieves for not paying their tithes and
giving their offerings
○ He tells them to prove him by bringing their their tithes and offerings to his
storehouse (temple)
○ They would receive blessings if they were faithful
○ He would open the windows of heaven and bless them
○ He would rebuke the Devourer

Why should we pay tithes and give offerings?
● Because God commands it:
○ Everything we have belongs to God
○ We should pay our tithes as God promise to bless us, if we are faithful
● The tithe supports the church and all its needs
○ In order to spread the Gospel and have a place to unite in worship and
hear the Word of the Lord, there is a need of support from the
congregation
○ We also have a duty to support our Pastor in the full time job of
ministering
