ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
One of the most pressing environmental issues in my community is the
use of plastic bags in grocery stores. Despite the negative effects of
plastic, some people argue that plastic is convenient for consumers and
more helpful compared to other alternatives. On the other hand,
opponents of plastic bags point out that they are a major source of
pollution and harm to wildlife.
Pro-plastic users stated that plastics are more durable, cheap and
convenient. However, the use of it doesnt mean great harm to the
environment. They argued that although they use plastic bags, it can be
recycled and reused many times, thereby reducing waste and
contributing to the circular economy.
For anti-plastic groups, even though plastic is reused many times, it will
eventually end up in the ocean where they can entangle or suffocate
marine animals. Plastic bags also take hundreds of years to degrade,
and as they break down into smaller pieces, they release toxic chemicals
into the environment. Furthermore, plastic bags can clog drains, cause
floods, and litter streets, parks, and beaches.
Although the two sides have valid points, in response to this issue, most
local communities do not really ban the use of plastics because of its
efficiency. It leads us to think that it is indeed difficult to find a solution to
this kind of problem as many factors are to be considered. It also leads
us to think if there really is a solution.
Ultimately, the best approach may involve a combination of education,
innovation, policy, and individual responsibility. For instance, retailers
could offer incentives and resources to encourage customers to use
reusable bags, while also exploring alternative materials and disposal
methods for single-use bags. Consumers could also be more mindful of
their own consumption habits and make conscious choices about
reducing waste and supporting sustainable practices in their
communities. Only by working together can we find a solution that
benefits everyone and the planet.

1. Do we think about the potential a product has to become
hazardous when we purchase it?
As humans, we need to consider the potential risks and hazards associated
with a product before making a purchase. We cannot really avoid using
some products that have the potential to be hazardous because of their
usefulness. However, we can always prevent the hazards through being
familiar with the product, reading the label and proper method of disposal.
2. Do we read label directions pertaining to proper use and
disposal of products and follow them?
Reading label directions and following it is a must especially if the
product is to be used for the first time, or especially if it is hazardous. It
prevents us from harm as well as the people that may be in contact with
it if it is disposed improperly.
3. Do we dispose of these materials in our household trash or by
dumping them down the drain, or do we look for a more
proper method of disposal?
We should always look for a more proper method of disposal,
specifically following the directions indicated in the product. Dumping
them down the drain would cause floods and dumping it without proper
method of disposal in our household could harm our families. We can
also follow the guidelines of our local government to prevent hazards in
the community..
