Corruption
Corruption is when someone misuses their power, which was given to them to help
others, to benefit themselves instead. Corruption destroys trust, weakens democracy, slows down
economic development and increases inequality, poverty, social division and the environmental
crisis. To expose corruption and hold those responsible accountable, we need to understand how
corruption operates and the systems that allow it to thrive. Corruption can show up in various
ways, such as public officials asking for or accepting money or favors in return for their services,
or politicians misusing public funds or making unfair deals. Corruption can occur in many
places, including businesses, government, courts, media, and civil society. It can affect various
areas like health, education, infrastructure, and sports. It can involve anyone, from politicians
and government officials to businesspeople and ordinary citizens. Corruption can involve
anyone, including politicians, government officials, public servants, businesspeople, or ordinary
citizens. It particularly harms the poor and vulnerable by raising costs and limiting access to
essential services like healthcare, education, social programs, and even [Link] the issue I
will talk about is the corruption case in Indonesia which is “Bank Century”.
Bank century corrupted around Rp 6,76 trillion, this involved many parties and to date
only one perpetrator has been sent to prison. Bank Century's mega corruption case came to the
public in 2014. The Indonesian Political Indicator through the latest release entitled Kepercayaan
Publik terhadap Lembaga-lembaga Penegak Hukum dan Agenda Pemberantasan Korupsi
mengungkap bahwa mayoritas publik optimis Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (KPK) will
resolve the Bank Century's mega corruption case. The corruptor is Budi Mulya, Budi was stated
in July 2014 that he will be in prison for 10 years, but after 6 months which is in December 2014
the DKI Jakarta High Court has sentenced Budi Mulya to 12 years in prison. But after several
research and digging about the corruption they sentenced Budi Mulya to 15 years in prison.
“Tolak PK Pemohon/Terpidana Budi Mulya dan putusan kasasi yang dimohonkan PK tetap
berlaku,” said the Mahkamah Agung (MA), hakim agung Andi Samsan Nganro, to detikcom
Wednesday (18/11/2020). Just so you know, the indictment was read out on Thursday, March 6
2014. The proof for this case is that around fifty people of witnesses have been examined, the
defendant's statement letter on Friday, June 6 2014, The statements of 7 a charge experts and 8 a
de charge expert statements have been examined. Declared the defendant Budi Mulya, legally
and convincingly guilty of committing criminal acts of corruption jointly and as a continuing
crime as regulated and punishable by crime in Pasal 2 ayat 1. Pasal 18 UU no. 31 of 1999
concerning Eradication of Corruption Crimes or Pemberantasan Tindak Pidana Korupsi as
amended or changed by UU no. 20 of 2001 concerning Amendments or Peruaan to Law no. 31
year 1999 concerning Eradication of Corruption Crimes or Pemberantasan Tindak Pidana
korupsi.
The problem of corruption at Bank Century is still a major issue, even though there have
been efforts to deal with it. The reason it's so hard to fix is that the people involved in the
corruption still have a lot of power and influence. There’s also a real fear that taking strong
action might lead to disturbance or unrest. This situation has created an environment where many
other officials are taking advantage of the chaos to engage in corruption themselves. In
Indonesia, the laws designed to fight corruption are not enforced effectively, and part of the
problem is that some of these officials who should be upholding the law are actually contributing
to the corruption. While the creation of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and other
reform efforts are steps in the right direction, they have not been enough to completely solve the
problem. More comprehensive and effective measures are needed to truly tackle and resolve the
issue of corruption. In my opinion, the corruption issue at Bank Century is really troubling. It’s
not fair that some people in power are using their positions to take advantage of others and
engage in dishonest activities. It’s even worse when other officials see this and decide to do the
same thing. This kind of behavior undermines trust in important institutions and makes it harder
for everyone to get a fair deal. I think it’s really important for the government to take strong
actions to address this problem. We need clear and tough rules, and they should be enforced
properly. It’s also crucial to have transparency so people can see what’s going on and to protect
those who report wrongdoing. By making these changes, we can help prevent corruption and
make sure that everyone is held accountable for their actions.
My alternative solution may be, increase security in the bank and keep track of the
money. We can also create a special team to closely monitor the actions of bank officials and
government employees. Another alternative solution I want to share is that we can update and
enforce stricter anti-corruption laws, and make sure that those who are caught engaging in
corruption face serious consequences, such as heavy fines or jail time. Why? Because corruption
leads to serious bankruptcy for the country and for the people.
