Chemical Bonding and Reactions Notes

The document outlines the steps for writing chemical formulas, including identifying cations and anions and determining their charges. It explains chemical reactions, evidence of chemical change, and the difference between covalent and ionic bonding, along with naming conventions for covalent compounds. Additionally, it provides a list of prefixes for subscripts in chemical formulas.

Step 2- write the symbol of the anion

Step 3- determine the charges using the periodic and the roman numerals

Chem Reaction- is the process of breaking of chemical bonds in one or more
substances and the reforming of new bonds to create new substanes
Ex- process of making pizza invloves physical change, or the process of yeast in
the dough or by the gas stove to bake the pizza are chemical changes
Ex- Substances that change would be Methane + Oxygen, Substance that is formed
would be Carbon Dioxide + Water

Evidence of Chemical Change- Bubbling, Turns cloudy, Tempature Change, Color change

Reactants and Products- Energy is added to start a reaction

Reactant Symbols- The smallest symbols in (_) next to each chemical formula
indicate the phase of each substance in the reaction

AgI(S) + Na2S (Aq) --} Ag2S(AQ) + NaI (S)

Silver Iodide Solid combines with Sodium Sulfide Aqueous to produce Silver Sulfide
Aqueous and Sodium Iodide Solid

Covalent Bonding- Sharing of electrons between two atoms by overlapping of half

filled orbitals
-between two nonmetals
Ionic Bonding- transfer of electrons
-between a metal and a non metal

Naming Covalent Compounds

1. Add a prefix to the first nonmetal name depending on how many atoms there are,
except for when its just 1
2. Add a prefix to the second nonmetal even if its a 1
3. Drop the ending of the second nonmetals name and add -ide
4. Write them together

Subscript Number/Prefix
1/mono-
2/di-
3/tri-
4/tetra-
5/penta-
6/hexa-
7/hepta-
8/octa
9/nona-
10/deca-

N2O3- (Di)Nitrogen (Tri)Oxide
