Lesson 8. Computers in our Daily Life

Activities
1. Cite at least 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of computers and
explain how they could affect human activities. Rubrics: 10 points
(Organization-5; Content-5)
Advantages of Computers
 Computer helps the user to finish their designated tasks easily
in few seconds.
 It helps the user in better understanding and communication
with other devices.
Disadvantages of Computers
 Computers can be a distraction because of its high
entertainment value.
 Use of computers nowadays increases the numbers of
cybercrimes.
How they could affect human activities
 Computer can make human activities easier and faster, it could
help to lessen our everyday work. On the other hand, it could
also be a threat to us. Improper use of it may lead us to danger.

2. Use an image that shows improper posture in using a computer

and suggest how to correct it. Rubrics: 10 points (Creativity-5;
Accuracy/Content-5)
Improper posture in using a computer
Some ways to correct posture in using computer is to:
Sit with a back straight (no hunching), your shoulders pulled back and
buttock touching the end of the seat.
Keep your neck and head in an upright angle with your ears aligned
with your shoulders. According to studies, tilting the head forward
just 15 degrees (so called “text neck”) doubles the amount of pressure
on your neck as the weight of your head doubles.
Avoid leaning on any side. Keep hips even to distribute weight of
body.
Bend your knees at a 90 degree angle, and keep your knees even with
or slightly lower than hips.
Leave a 2-3 inch small gap between the bottom of your thighs and the
edge of the seat. This helps reduce pressure build up in the underside
of your thighs.
Keep both feet flat on the floor, or rest them on a footrest if you can’t
reach it.
Don’t sit with your legs crossed, which restricts blood flow.
Avoid sitting for longer than 30 minutes at a time.

3. Explain the usage of a binary system? Rubrics: 10 points

(Organization-5; Content-5)
Computers use the binary number system to manipulate and store all
of their data including numbers, words, videos, graphics, and music.
Binary is most well known for being used in computers. Each bit (a
storage module) has two values, it can represent 1 or 0. Binary is used
in computers because it’s the most simple way to store and use data
that we know

4. Differentiate bit and byte. Rubrics: 10 points (Organization-5;

Content-5)

The main difference between bit and byte is the size of the file or the
amount of information it contains. A bit is the smallest unit of
computer memory, and it has the capacity to store a maximum of two
different values. While a byte, which is composed of eight bits, has the
potential to store a maximum of 256 distinct values.

Lesson 9. Networks & Wired & Wireless Data

E-Activities:
Rubrics: 10 points each (Organization-5; Content-5)
1. What is the difference between analog and digital technology?

The difference between analog and digital technology is that in analog

technology, information is translated into electric pulses of varying
amplitude. In digital technology, the information is converted into a
number (digits) and displays and stores it.

2. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of wired and
wireless communication media?

Using wired networks generally transfer data faster compared to

wireless networks. It is much less likely to suffer from interference
than wireless network. It is also much difficult for an unauthorized
user to intercept data. However, wired networks are expensive to
install or configure. The user also can’t instantly move a device from
one location to another as there may not be a network connection
available.
Using wireless networks allows the user to move around freely and
still stay connected. New nodes can easily be added without the
interruption to the network. However, wireless network only has a
limited range. Each wireless access point only has so much bandwidth
to share among connected nodes. The greater the number of nodes
that are connected, the less bandwidth each receives and the slower
communication becomes.

Modulation transforms digital signals into analog signals for transmission over communication channels, allowing data to travel effectively across media such as radio waves. Demodulation reverses this process at the receiving end to retrieve the original digital signal. This bidirectional conversion ensures that data retains its integrity across diverse media types and transmission environments .

Wired systems offer faster data transfer rates and greater security due to minimized susceptibility to interference, making them suitable for stable, high-capacity network environments. Conversely, wireless systems provide flexibility and ease of installation, crucial for mobile operations, though they are constrained by range and more prone to interference, which affects speed and reliability .

Advanced topology systems, by determining the structural layout of network connections, can optimize data flow and resource allocation across large-scale networks. Different topologies, such as bus, star, or mesh, have varying implications for scalability, cost, and resilience against failures, requiring a careful analysis of expected network load and failure points to achieve optimal network performance .

Analog technology translates information into electric pulses of varying amplitude, making it susceptible to noise and distortion but potentially capturing a full range of data continuity. In contrast, digital technology converts information into binary digits (0s and 1s), allowing for more precise and less noisy data handling, as errors can be more easily detected and corrected .

Innovations in educational software have fostered personalized learning experiences, engaging students through interactive media, and enabling educators to craft differentiated instruction tailored to individual learning paces. They facilitate remote learning and widen access to diverse educational resources. However, such transformations necessitate addressing the digital divide and ensuring equitable access to technological tools .

VPNs provide secure remote communication by encrypting data over public networks, maintaining data confidentiality, and integrity. They enable cost-effective connectivity, resembling private networks in performance while circumventing physical infrastructure costs. However, they demand robust authentication measures to counter security risks and may incur performance bottlenecks as data is encrypted and compressed, impacting speed .

The binary system, which uses bits that can be either 0 or 1, simplifies data storage and processing by providing a reliable on/off state for electronic components. This simplification allows computers to execute complex operations with speed and efficiency, as all data types (text, numbers, images) can be encoded in binary format, enhancing storage and computational accuracy .

Digital communication protocols, by converting information into discrete binary formats, can facilitate error-detection, compress data for better bandwidth utilization, and ensure consistent data integrity across lengthy transmissions. This contrasts with analog systems, where signal degradation can result in data loss and increased error rates, making protocols essential for reliable network communication .

Information overload leads to cognitive fatigue, as individuals struggle to process excessive data volumes, often delaying decisions and increasing the likelihood of errors. It dilutes focus and hampers the ability to prioritize relevant data, thus complicating strategic decision-making and operational efficiency in organizations .

Proper ergonomic design enhances productivity and minimizes health risks by ensuring equipment and workspace arrangements complement human anatomy. Ergonomic setups reduce strain on the body, decrease fatigue, and prevent repetitive strain injuries, leading to sustained worker performance and reduced absenteeism. However, failure to implement ergonomic principles can lead to discomfort and chronic health issues, impacting productivity .
