Students are expected to commit to the principles of academic integrity.
Academic integrity includes a commitment to not engage in or tolerate acts of falsification,
misrepresentation or deception. Such acts of dishonesty include cheating or copying, plagiarizing, submitting
another persons' work as one's own, using Internet or other sources without citation, fabricating field data or
citations, stealing examinations, tampering with the academic work of another student, facilitating other
students' acts of academic dishonesty, etc.
Plagiarism for assignments and/or reports may result in a zero grade for the assignment and/or the report in question.
Cheating during an examination may result in a zero grade for this examination. Further action, according to
university regulations, would also be implemented.

Q.1. In 1517, when Sultan Selim defeated the Mamluks at the Battle of Marj Dabiq outside Aleppo, the
glorious Mamluk Empire, with its capital in Cairo, was transformed into conquered territories of the
Ottoman Empire, ruled by its Sultan from his capital in Istanbul. Although the Ottoman governors
continued to construct buildings carrying their names in Cairo, they never matched the luxury or
splendor of Mamluk buildings or buildings in Istanbul. Elaborate from your understanding of course
material on the possible explanation of the statement above.

Q.2. The Ottoman Conquest in Egypt in early 16th century came after nearly two centuries of Burji
Mamluk rule. In light of your understanding of each dynasty’s history, architecture and artistic
traditions, find the common features that survived from the Burji Mamluk dynasty into the Ottoman
dynasty while mentioning new features that were introduced by the Ottoman Conquest.
