IEEE REPORT: Sound Level Meter Using LED Bar Display
Abstract
This report presents the design and simulation of a Sound Level Meter utilizing an LM3914 LED Bar
Display. The circuit incorporates an Electret Microphone, a BC547 NPN Transistor for amplification,
and the LM3914 IC for LED-based sound level indication. The design is simulated using Multisim,
ensuring real-time responsiveness to varying sound intensities.
1. Introduction
Sound level meters are essential in various applications, including noise monitoring and audio
visualization. This project aims to design a simple yet effective LED-based sound level meter that
can visually represent sound intensity in a bar-graph format. The system comprises a microphone
for sound detection, a transistor amplifier, and the LM3914 LED driver for output visualization.
2. Circuit Design
**2.1 Components**
- Electret Microphone (or AC signal source for simulation)
- BC547 NPN Transistor (Amplifier)
- LM3914 LED Driver IC
- 10 LEDs (for level indication)
- 10KOhm Resistor (Biasing for transistor)
- 100KOhm Resistor (Voltage divider for microphone)
- 1KOhm Resistors (x10) (For LEDs current limiting)
- 10uF Capacitor (For signal smoothing)
- 9V DC Power Supply
- Ground (GND)
3. Circuit Operation
1. **Microphone Input Stage:** Converts sound waves into electrical signals.
2. **Transistor Amplification:** BC547 transistor amplifies weak signals.
3. **LED Display (LM3914 Driver):** Drives LED bar display.
4. **Power Supply:** 9V DC Power provides necessary biasing.
4. Multisim Simulation
The circuit is implemented in Multisim with the following adjustments:
- Microphone replaced with an AC voltage source (1mV to 100mV range).
- AC amplitude adjusted to simulate different sound levels.
- Simulation executed, verifying LED activation based on input intensity.
- Reference voltage of LM3914 tweaked for optimized LED response.
5. Conclusion
This project successfully demonstrates a simple sound level meter using LEDs for real-time sound
visualization. The Multisim simulation verifies the functionality, proving the circuit's effectiveness in
detecting and displaying sound intensities. The design can be further enhanced by incorporating
adjustable gain control and digital sound analysis.
