Study of IC 7493 as Binary Counter
Aim: To study and verify the operation of a 4-bit binary counter using IC 7493 on a logic
trainer kit.
Apparatus: Logic trainer kit, IC 7493 (4-bit binary counter), Connecting wires
Theory: IC 7493 is a 4-bit ripple counter consisting of
four JK flip-flops connected in cascade. It can count
from 0 to 15 (0000 to 1111 in binary). The IC has two
sections:
1. MOD-2 counter (1-bit) using Flip-Flop A.
2. MOD-8 counter (3-bit) using Flip-Flops B, C,
and D. The counter can be used in different modes by
properly connecting the reset and clock inputs.
Pin Configuration of IC 7493 Logic diagram of IC 7493
Circuit Diagram:
Procedure:
1. Mount the IC 7490 on the Logic trainer kit.
2. Connect the circuit as per the circuit diagram. Output QA is connected to input B.
3. Connect the outputs to the LED indicators.
4. Give the clock input and observe the LED output after each clock pulse to verify the
counting sequence.
5. Record your observation in the truth table
6. Verify the reset function and ensure the counter starts again from 0000.
Observation: Truth Table for 4-bit binary counter.
