THE PROBLEM

Background of the Study

In little more than a decade, the impact of social media has gone from

being an entertaining extra to a fully integrated part of nearly every aspect of

daily life for many. Many have argued social media increases feelings of

connectivity and belonging (Akram, 2018; O’Reilly, 2020; Pennington, 2020).

However, there is increasing evidence shown through multiple research studies

that social media is also linked with increased feelings of loneliness (Primack et

al., 2017; Shensa et al., 2015; Twenge et al., 2019). Due to the impact of the new

Covid-19, TikTok has gradually become a tool used by teenagers to pass time

and pastime, and as an emerging social platform, the unique function of

commenting has become a very popular way for teenagers to socialize. TikTok is

a social media platform that involves watching and posting short, looping videos

that have can have a variety of themes, including singing, dancing, animals,

stories, opinions, and several others (Anderson, 2020). In addition, he also

explained that what makes TikTok a highly addictive platform is that the videos

presented to a user are algorithm-driven, and highly tailored to their selected

preferences, view history, rewatches, comments, likes or reshares.

Unlike other traditional leisure methods like travel or sports, Tiktok saves a

lot of time while reducing the cost of entertainment. While this may seem like low-
level entertainment, it is a great way to unwind for teens who do not have much

free time for their study-heavy tasks. While one may assume the concept of

social media would bring people together, there has been various anecdotal

accounts as well as empirical support indicating otherwise. There have already

been several studies that show a possible link with social media and depression

(Frison & Eggermont, 2017; Kelly et al., 2018; Sagioglou & Greitemeyer, 2014;

Twenge, 2017; Twenge et al., 2019).

While social media has been skyrocketing in popularity in recent years,

the research on this topic in regard to well-being and mental health has also

increased substantially (Schønning et al., 2020). The main focus of included

studies was social media and some aspect of pathology, with depression being

the most studied aspect at 29% (Schønning et al., 2020). Only about half of the

studies focused on specific networking sites like TikTok, and Facebook was the

most studied networking site at 39% (Schønning et al., 2020). While Facebook is

a dominant social media site among young people, there are other social

networking sites that have gained popularity such as Instagram, Twitter, and

TikTok (Schønning et al., 2020). To bridge the study gaps, by analyzing high

school students' use of TikTok data and its relationship on the their mental well

being, this paper puts forward suggestions to help families, schools and

governments take measures, and draw their attention to the mental health of

contemporary adolescents and promote their physical and mental health, so as

to promote the healthy growth of teenagers.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter provides all the related information, topics, ideas, studies and

observations by various researchers, writers and authors on the variables which

formed the conceptual framework of this study.

Positive Influences

Some users used TikTok for promotion, business, and enjoyment. On

the contrary, TikTok's positive purpose and impact must be the inverse. This

study tries to demonstrate TikTok's positive and negative effects on young

people.

Users can display their skill by making short films on TikTok. Giving people

the chance to showcase their talents in comedy, dancing, music, and other

creative arts promotes artistic expression while also boosting individuality and

self-confidence. In general, people use social media for business as well as

social objectives. As a tool for managing businesses and selling goods and

services, it is particularly useful for influencing the intentions and contentment of

customers (Sharabati et al., 2022). Additionally, TikTok has gained a large user

base and become widely used due to social media's multipurpose features and

video streaming media format. As a result, more and more people start using

TikTok for a variety of reasons, including amusement, information searching,

knowledge acquisition, pressure relief, passing the time during downtime, and so

forth (Tang et al., 2021).Moreover, TikTok was previously limited to serving as a

platform for brief video displays for amusement purposes. But as it has grown,

TikTok has also given entrepreneurs new and exciting chances to market their

brands more widely using video ads (Sari, Supraidi, & Rakhman, 2024).
In a more recent study carried by Awanda et al. (2024). Examining how

TikTok affects teens' lifestyles is the goal of this research. One hundred teens in

Indonesia were the subjects of this study, which used a survey approach. The

findings demonstrated that TikTok has an impact on teens' lifestyles that is both

beneficial and harmful. The approach is a survey that involves giving questions to

one hundred adolescent TikTok users. According to the findings, teens' lifestyles

were significantly impacted by their use of TikTok, particularly in terms of their

favorite meals and beverages, clothing models, pastimes and leisure activities,

and skincare and cosmetics usage.

A study that was conducted by Albahroyni, Sazali, and Khatibha ( 2023).

The effectiveness of salam da'wah television is impacted by social media Tiktok,

as this study shows. Using a Google form, the survey is distributed

electronically. Members of the salamtv Tiktok account comprise the population.

Regression analysis was utilized to examine the research data. 1) The

effectiveness of salamtv da'wah was positively and significantly impacted by the

da'wah delivery on Tiktok, with a value contribution of 55.1%; each increment in

delivery value increases the effectiveness of da'wah by 0.846.

TikTok use, it turns out, positively affects pupils' interest levels. A study of

Lobo et al. (2022), suggested that tiktok were made in light of the study's

findings. This study presents a fresh perspective on how students might utilize

the TikTok app wisely and responsibly to increase their level of involvement in a
local college setting. In addition, Decenilla et al. (2022) noted that, Students

showed that creating their own mini-lectures on Tiktok videos has a good impact

on their learning behavior by encouraging them to learn and build their

confidence in teaching others while having fun and making history lessons

[Link] the real world Students who frequently watch tiktok videos were

affected by the video's content, soundtrack, and quality. They made a big

impression on Tiktok as well, especially after being entertained and making a

statement.(Ngilangil, 2022)

Gajo et al. (2023) study was conducted primarily to assess students’

mental health through the use of the TikTok application. It showed a positive

impact between the level of engagement in terms of frequency of use, duration of

use and the students’ use of TikTok application, the level of effects of the

abovementioned application in students’ mental health; the level of students’

management of mental health in terms of academic stress, family crisis and peer

pressure. Moreover, Alternatively, there was a favorable relationship between

using the aforementioned application and Students' mental health and wellness.

The study's findings have the potential to enhance awareness. This suggests that

the TikTok app can help to sustain the harmful impacts of many factors impacting

college students' mental health while also raising mental health awareness for

everyone. emphasizes the necessity of utilizing the program in moderation and

how it may help implement early interventions and prevention for the symptoms

of any mental health concerns connected with the discovered common variables,
which are academic stress, family crises, and peer pressure. TikTok encourages

peer-to-peer contact among kids because it's interactive. This enhances

knowledge sharing and gives individuals more confidence when making

decisions about contraception by enabling them to share experiences and

guidance. The study gave TikTok creators advice on how to validate their work

by working with subject matter experts and ensuring that the information they

provide on contraceptives is reliable and accurate.(Nwafor and Nnaemeka, 2023)

According to study, TikTok can help spread the word about mental

health concerns, reduce stigma connected with them, and empower young

people to learn about and deal with mental health difficulties while also

functioning as a network of peer support. According to research, TikTok can

serve as a peer support network while also encouraging youth to learn about and

manage mental health challenges. It can also help spread awareness of mental

health concerns and reduce the stigma connected with them.(Turuba et al, 2023)

The TikTok app is generally regarded by students as a helpful tool for

vocabulary development since it makes learning more engaging and prevents

pupils from becoming easily fatigued. As they study the language, students will

pick up a wealth of knowledge about vocabulary in English. The software

provides captions beneath the original narrative, which aids in word

comprehension. Students can gain from the TikTok application in a variety of

ways, such as its visually appealing layout, acoustic elements that aid with word
recall, and subtitles that clarify vocabulary. With this user-friendly application,

viewers may watch videos at any time and from any location.(Pratiwi and

Syafrizal, 2024)

People of all ages and backgrounds utilized TikTok extensively.

Certain users utilized TikTok for leisure, professional endeavors, and advertising

tactics. Via videos, posts, and online conversations, Tiktok gives young adults a

platform to investigate, express, and share their identities and selfhood in relation

to concepts of mental health and sickness. I'll go through how young adults utilize

social media to care for and treat mental health and sickness, as well as to learn

about, experience, and criticize their own lived experiences. claiming that work in

the field of psychiatry can promote the need for social scientists to further

investigate, acknowledge, and confront these new developments in language

and social practices around mental health and sickness via social media (Bailie,

2024) Furthermore, Gender variations in addiction, self-evaluation, and FOMO

have been shown to enhance anxiety, reduce melancholy, and lower self-

esteem. Long-term TikTok use, like that of other social media platforms, can lead

to addiction, although the need for more visibility encourages creativity and skill

development, stated by Dudukovic(2023).

Educational Advantages
According to Revesensio et al. (2022) TikTok is a useful tool for learning

English grammar. However, it has limitations in that some films mislead and

confuse viewers. rather than easing the obstacles faced by college students.

Things that people believe are less reliable than books. TikTok encourages

students to learn grammar by watching videos of native speakers discussing

grammar-related issues such as finishing sentences and filling in the blanks, joining

a study group, or seeking peer feedback.

Learning about TikTok will help kids develop their vocabulary and

educate them how to use plain English. Though small, there are some

drawbacks to using the TikTok app, such as the requirement for students to have

a large quota to access the program, the occasional existence of less

instructional videos, and ambiguous TikTok trends, examines the idea of "digital

emotional labor," where users use the digital emotional contagion framework to

study how to navigate their emotions in the face of misinformation and deceit, as

well as the viral impact of emotional display,.(Pritawi et al., 2024)

Putri et al. (2024) noted that TikTok is an interactive and entertaining

learning tool that improves kids' speaking, listening, and writing abilities. In order

to maximize TikTok's educational efficacy, more research is necessary, since the

study's conclusion emphasizes the app's potential as a useful tool for language

learning. The ramifications imply that teachers can use TikTok to improve

language learning outcomes and increase student engagement. Khasawneh

(2024) stated that, TikTok's entertaining and fascinating characteristics have a

significant impact on the improvement and engagement of language students in

the learning of language [Link] can improve their comprehension and

recollection of the curriculum by using the platform to research additional

information on the themes they are learning. For example, students can watch

relevant TikTok videos to refresh their memories before taking history

[Link] the platform has visual, aural, and kinesthetic capabilities, it can

accommodate a variety of learning methods. When students connect with

content that is relevant to their interests, they learn more effectively and

enjoyably.

The results from the study of Saliban and Mapuang (2024) showed that

students think TikTok is a good resource for practicing English pronunciation.

This is evident from the responses provided by UNAI students, of whom 45%

said TikTok could be used to help with English pronunciation. Of the pupils, 45%

think that using TikTok can help them pronounce words more correctly in

English. Ultimately, TikTok is regarded as a useful resource for learning

pronunciation by 45% of UNAI students. Last but not least, the information

suggests that TikTok may be a helpful resource for improving university students'

English speaking abilities.

With its variety of content, TikTok is a useful addition to the study

materials, helping users grasp the information presented. Pupils highlight how

the content on the platform improves their understanding by providing more

interesting and easily available learning resources. Additionally, TikTok's

interactive elements—like stitch films and duets—emerge as essential elements

that add a fun and interesting element to the learning process. These elements

are highly preferred by students, who emphasize how beneficial they are to the

educational process. Thirdly, students’ self-confidence in speaking English is

greatly enhanced by TikTok. In response, the students underline that the platform

serves as a transforming environment where they get over their first concerns

regarding fluency. Students report feeling more confident and driven when

speaking in English after engaging in regular speaking practice.(Sarkila et al.,

2024) According to the findings of Budiarthra and Akmar 2024) , the participants

identified certain strategies for learning vocabulary, including saving the videos,

using the vocabulary items they learned through TikTok, and frequently

accessing the materials. They also believed that TikTok was a comfortable tool

for vocabulary learning, improving their vocabulary knowledge and vocabulary

fluency. Furthermore, TikTok's examples assist students to expand their

vocabulary and provide a context based on actual events. Seeing the same

vocabulary words in one movie or numerous videos at various times After seeing

the topic a few times, children can improve their word fluency and retention,

because of the intimate link between vocabulary knowledge and fluency.

The data that was collected by Suraisimi (2024) using a Google Form

and circulated around the internet, the study's findings showed that participants'

perceptions of TikTok as a resource for learning English vocabulary were

favorably correlated with the quantitative data. For instance the majority of them

agree that TikTok is an excellent resource for extending one's vocabulary, and

the majority of them claim to have learnt new terms while using the app. These

findings suggest that TikTok can be utilized by children to improve their language

skills and learn new [Link] can help students improve their English

language [Link] makes learning English fun and stress-free. TikTok also

has many advantages, such as being free and widely available, having a diverse

range of fascinating video content, being simple to use, and allowing users to

learn from native speakers, according to Novatsari (2022).

The study results of Lemana et at. (2024) show that TikTok fosters

stronger relationships between teachers and students by assisting them in

managing work-related stress and enabling them to show who they really are.

Their professional identities are established and their teaching approaches are

strengthened by this interaction. The study claims that TikTok's capacity to

connect professional engagement and emotional expression offers helpful

insights for integrating social media into educational frameworks.

Not only in the Academics and Boosting some confidence can tiktok

give. The of Tiktok highlights the TikTok affiliate marketing's potential as a

beneficial tool for developing creativity and useful skills in students studying art
and design, providing them with important insights into the world of digital

marketing while also helping the greater business community. (Aziz, 2024)

Stress Reliever

Guo (2021), Students can use TikTok as a means of stress relief and

an escape from the pressures of school. Taking a brief pause to utilize TikTok

can be helpful when dealing with different assignments and peer [Link]

algorithm used by TikTok to select material makes advantage of user

preferences to increase the possibility of finding upbeat and inspirational

[Link] may alter their feeds to prioritize content that supports wellbeing

thanks to this customisation, which helps them cope with stress, Stated by

Springer Link (2024).Allowing viewers to lose themselves in a hilarious and

imaginative realm, entertaining content allows them to temporarily escape the

stresses of their personal lives and academic duties. Moreover, Many TikTok

creators promote awareness and relaxation techniques, such as breathing

exercises and meditation. These approaches, which promote a sense of

presentness and tranquility, can help youngsters reduce anxiety and improve

their mental health.

University students face a variety of academic, financial, and emotional

stressors. As a result, people rely increasingly on social media to cope with

stress and find social support. A thematic analysis of the data revealed that,

while TikTok briefly alleviated academic stress, it also encouraged addictive

behavior and upward social comparisons. TikTok's algorithm, which suggested

content based on users' previous interactions, played a significant role in

mitigating these disparities, Stated by, Ramsden and Talbot (2024).

Self-Confidence

As a creative outlet, students can make videos on TikTok. The

process of creating content and exhibiting their skills can boost their confidence

and sense of self-worth, Palupi et al(2020). Students can feel more confident and

good about themselves when they get likes and encouraging comments on their

TikTok videos. Their talents and ingenuity are validated when they see that

others find enjoyment in their work, as mentioned by Nasidi et al. (2024).

According to Mia (2020), TikTok contributed to her greater confidence. The likes,

views, comments, and new followers all contributed to a rise in my serotonin

levels. I tried to be like other female Filipino TikTok video creators. I began

experimenting with makeup and wearing more form-fitting clothing. My partner

encouraged me, telling me that I was becoming more comfortable with my body

and realizing how appealing I am as a person. Along with his assistance, I was

pleased to check the app several times each day due to the wonderful feedback I

received from users on my stuff and the comments they left telling me I looked

nice. People praising me for how good I am really boost my self confidence.

NEGATIVE INFLUENCES

Students are fascinated by and addicted to TikTok, as well as how

TikTok use influences students' learning behavior. TikTok has created a new

culture that influences student learning behavior, such as difficulty concentrating

for extended periods of time, as well as negative consequences for student

learning. According to this article, excessive TikTok use can have a negative

impact on student learning behavior, hence measures should be taken to

regulate and restrict TikTok app use among students.(Shiddiiq and Taufik, 2024)

A study conducted by Uhriya and Dheasari (2024). Three parents of

pupils in the fifth and sixth grades at TK AL – IKHLAS in the Kademangan District
participated in this study as responders. The study's findings indicate that

children's moral development is significantly impacted by their use of the social

networking site [Link] children behavior changes brought about by TikTok

videos featuring moral and religious lessons that deviate from the curriculum at

AL - IKHLAS Kindergarten, Kademangan District. Despite the fact that watching

videos on the TikTok app has some benefits, like raising knowledge and

sharpening kids' minds, there are drawbacks as well. Watching TikTok material

causes kids to act inappropriately, use harsh language, and copy adult styles on

the platform.

The study conducted by Rahmayanti and Lubis (2024), aims to

understand the factors that lead to increased feelings of insecurity in university

students when they interact with TikTok [Link] has the potential to be a

diversion and divert attention from education. Kids who are distracted could

resort to social media as a means of communication. People may react to these

kinds of distractions in different ways and for different reasons. Distractions may

lead to a higher usage of social media. One possible explanation for why people

turn to social media instead of ignoring it when they should be studying is the

lack of self-control displayed by its users. The results showed that insecure

feelings can be triggered in different ways such as failure, social anxiety,

perfectionism, and self-comparison with others, especially on social media. It is

important to manage these feelings well and develop strategies to improve self-

esteem and mental [Link] understanding the factors that influence feelings
of insecurity, we can identify effective intervention strategies to reduce their

negative impact and promote college students' mental and emotional well-being.

This research highlights the urgency and relevance of understanding the factors

that cause insecurity in university students when viewing Tik Tok content. Topics

covered include social media, TikTok, content, insecure, factors that cause

insecurity by TikTok content, and efforts to overcome insecure feelings in college

[Link] culture is witnessing changes as a result of the social media app

TikTok. This application has led to an increase in concerns such as the beauty

complex, superiority complex, child pornography, cyberbullying, parental

disengagement, and many more.(Hassan, 2023)

A research from Ngilangil (2022) stated that, Although TikTok can

provide amusement and opportunities for social engagement, there is worry that

users, especially teenagers, could become unduly engrossed in the app and

neglect their relationships and obligations. In addition, Salasac et al. (2022)

stated that Students' academic performance may suffer if they use TikTok. One

example is that it has been observed that students who use TikTok a lot could

find it difficult to finish their tasks and pay attention in class, which could result in

worse academic results. Furthermore, Abiera (2024) stated that, It's claimed that

tiktok is ranked second, right after YouTube, in the study that looked at which

app boosts and encourages procrastination the most.

Tiktok users can communicate with one another by leaving comments

and liking photographs and videos. You may, however, receive a favorable or

negative message. People's mental health may be harmed by this remark.

Tiktokers have an impact on Tiktok users' psychological well-being. Tiktok users'

mental health might be characterized by feelings of guilt, anxiety, fear, and

comparison to others.(Nuryamsi, 2024)

Children, adults, and parents routinely abuse the TikTok app. Regarding

some of the disadvantages of using the app, such as syndromic, sexual

harassment, learning tutorials, and disconnection from the surrounding

community, according by Oktarini et al.(2022).Parents, adults, and children all

too regularly misuse the TikTok app. About the disadvantages of using the app,

such as syndromic relationships, sexual harassment, learning tutorials, and

disassociation from the surrounding community. Anggaeni et al. (2023) stated

that, Parents play a crucial role in monitoring and educating their children on

TikTok, as the app has the ability to impact their polite language skills.(Anggraeni

ey al.,2023)

Procrastination
As a study of Inner Drive stated, Procrastination is more common

among students who struggle with self-regulation, and using TikTok excessively

can make matters worse. TikTok is a great way to release stress, but as our kids

get more and more addicted to this loop of temporary dopamine with every video,

it starts to negatively impact kids' and teens' performance and productivity,

turning into a stressor rather than a re lief. TikTok is a terrific way to decompress,

but as our kids become more and more dependent on this transient dopamine

loop with each video, it actually makes matters worse by increasing stress levels

and impairing the performance and productivity of young children and

teenagers .TikTok use may cause stress and procrastination, which might impair

academic performance. Despite TikTok's growing popularity, research into these

consequences remains sparse, making it more difficult to develop effective

remedies. A cyclical relationship exists between self-regulation problems and

procrastination, whereby self-control problems are exacerbated by increased

procrastination, which puts off academic work even longer. Moreover, Lui and

Ling (2024) said that more academic stress causes bad TikTok usage, which in

turn makes procrastination behaviors worse.

Changes of Behaviors
Excessive TikTok use among social media users has been shown to

impair students' personalities.(Paramitha and Wardana, 2022). An increase in

deference to authority figures. Because of the influence of TikTok trends and

challenges, numerous kids reported engaging in disruptive behavior in class,

such as disagreeing with teachers or acting out. Liang (2021) noted that High

school kids exhibit a limited degree of agency in their daily TikTok usage through

their diverse attitudes and [Link] who experience pressure to use

TikTok regularly run the risk of developing addictive behaviors that impair their

ability to interact socially and emotionally. Nugroho et al (2023) said that, TikTok

users may imitate trends without giving them a second thought, which can have a

negative influence on student conduct. Examples of this behavior include

decreasing manners and an increase in [Link] situation shows how the

tiktok program can naturally, automatically, and reflectively affect students'

behavior, attitudes, and opinions.

Misinformation
Johnson (2022) stated that It's critical to verify information found on

social media because a lot of people just take everything they see online as hard,

genuine truth, and because of the accessibility, extensive distribution, and

potential harm disinformation may do to people's ideas. Moreover the study of

Lan and Tung (2024), clarifies the complex relationships between university

students in Danang city's awareness of and faith in fake news, particularly on

social media platforms like TikTok. The results demonstrate that students are

generally aware of the problems caused by misinformation in the digital age and

are aware of the proliferation of fake news on TikTok

According to Lan and Tung (2024), Students are usually aware of the

prevalence of fake news on TikTok, exhibiting a knowledge of the challenges

posed by incorrect information in the digital age. The survey found that students'

levels of trust in the information they find on TikTok vary. Despite being aware of

this, students usually regard TikTok as a fun platform rather than a reliable

source of news.

Effects of Tiktok on the Emotional and Mental Health

Social media is intended to be used as a form of entertainment that

improves mood, lowers stress, and provides an escape from the real world

(Omar & Dequan, 2020; Shankleman et al., 2021; Throuvala et al., 2019), as

cited in (Ramsden and Talbot, 2023). After using TikTok, the majority of users

reported feeling "better" and "relaxed," implying that the app had a relaxing

impact and served as a distraction from the stresses of college life.

TikTok hosts a wide range of content, and viewers can interpret it in

ways that are appropriate for them. Our culture is witnessing changes as a result

of the social media app TikTok. This application has led to an increase in

concerns such as the beauty complex, superiority complex, child pornography,

cyberbullying, parental disengagement, and many more, as stated by Hassan

(2023).

Using the Tiktok app on a computer, tablet, or laptop is as easy as

using a smartphone. Tiktok is the most popular app worldwide since it is simple

to use and in high demand. TikTok allows people to relax and have fun during

their free time. However, as TikTok's popularity grows, more students are using it

as a major platform. Nonetheless, the variety of short films available on TikTok

may result in inconsistent content quality due to their low cost of production.(Lui,

2023).

According to the study of Herath et al. (2020), In today's digital age,

the app TikTok is a revolutionary concept. Using this software has a big impact

on both schooling and social media. This is because tik tok contains a variety of
information, both useful and detrimental. Furthermore, everyone in this group,

from early infants to adults, accepts this knowledge. This study employed a

literature review technique to investigate various perspectives on the implications

of the tiktok application on education, notably in IndonesiaAs a result, being

aware of the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing tik tok will enable users

to share knowledge with the public and use social media wisely. Thus, it is

imperative that this research be done since it has the power to both inform the

public and keep the community in check by curbing aberrant behavior on social

media. In addition to being used by many organizations for entertainment and

skill development, tiktok is also starting to have some negative impacts, such as

narcissism. When people compete for recognition and continually try to project

their group as the dominant one in their environment, a noticeable change takes

place.(Herlina, 2023)

Students' emotional and mental health is impacted by TikTok in a

complex and multidimensional way, with both positive and negative impacts

Users can spread knowledge to the public and utilize social media wisely by

being aware of the advantages and disadvantages of tik tok. Students' emotional

reactions to TikTok content might differ greatly, which can have an impact on

their mental and emotional [Link] may get inspiration and positive vibes

from TikTok. Funny skits, dancing competitions, and inspirational stories that can

elevate one's spirits and foster a feeling of community are just a few of the

entertainment content available on the [Link] there are also serious

detrimental effects of TikTok on mental health. Excessive usage of the platform

has been connected in studies to elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and

poor sleep quality among teenagers.

A performed research by Alimpos et al. (2024) noted that, Students

can enhance their time management skills by adopting study habits that help

them balance their personal and academic obligations. Some pupils don't have

it because they function better without it. Rather, they employ the application

for different [Link] this platform, students can creatively

communicate their feelings and experiences. People might feel understood

and supported by sharing their personal stories about mental health, which

can bring comfort and affirmation.(Basch et al. 2022)

For some reason, other studies are conducted to explore the effects of

tiktok on the Students due to the exposure to various psychosocial stressors.

Here are the related studies conducted that explore the effects of tiktok. It

focuses on the experiences of the students.

A study from St. Paul University Surigao investigates how TikTok

affects student behavior, with an emphasis on learning new things and moral

amusement. The results show that TikTok, which provides both entertaining

and informative content, has a significant impact on students' learning

practices. However, the study also found that using the app for extended
periods of time had no obvious effect on these behaviors, implying that while

TikTok can be informative, it can also be distracting.

In the study of Ramsden, E., Talbot, C.V. (2024) it found out that tiktok

has the potential to promote mental awareness by disseminating information

about mental health issues and coping strategies. This can empower students

to seek help and adopt healthier behaviors.

Audrey Mekler's research investigates the effects of TikTok on the

academic performance and attention span of college students. The findings

indicate a relationship between increased TikTok usage and issues finishing

academic assignments, as well as higher levels of classroom distraction. This

suggests that TikTok might be detrimental to students' learning habits and

academic achievement by diverting users from their homework.

Furthermore, The influence of TikTok on mental health is a big issue.

Excessive use of the site may interfere with academic commitments and cause

negative mental health impacts such as worry and melancholy, according to

researchers. TikTok's addictive nature may lead to procrastination and increased

stress, which may negatively impact students' academic performance, NDD

treatment Centers (2024).

Generally, The researchers' findings demonstrate the intricate relationship

between TikTok and students' conduct and awareness. It offers opportunities for

creativity and learning, but it also brings risks of procrastination, distraction, and

negative effects on mental health. Understanding these repercussions is crucial

to motivating students to use the platform in more healthful ways. Given the

abundance of unanswered research problems regarding TikTok use, it is critical

to boost research efforts to acquire a better understanding of it and establish

whether any specific aspects of its use have detrimental behavioral

consequences. This study is especially relevant given the TikTok platform's user

base, which includes many potentially vulnerable youngsters.(Montag et al.,

2021)

Happy

Tiktok is an excellent method to pass the time. This program allows

participants to enhance their creative skills, meet new people, and dance. As

specified by Kitterman (2021), TikTok is mostly a place to have fun, with a wide

variety of inspirational and funny videos. This kind of material can make people

happy and laugh, which is good for the emotional health of the kids. Happiness is

a major emotion connected to TikTok content, according to research, which

makes it a popular platform for students looking for lighthearted amusement.

Additionally, The study's findings of Sinta (2022), indicates that students might

draw the conclusion that the TikTok duet video is a great resource for helping

them learn adjective vocabulary. Because they use the TikTok app most of the

time, they find it easy to do and they truly enjoy doing it. The TikTok duet video

app, which kids mistakenly believe is solely meant for amusement but may

actually be utilized as a learning tool, can also help them memorize more words,

particularly adjectives. TikTok not only provides humorous videos to a young,

multinational audience, but it also has a revolutionary structure of short

educational films made by experienced writers. This viewpoint provides several

opportunities to quickly and simply transmit knowledge across a wide range of

scientific areas.(Regasa et al., 2023)

Inspired

TikTok has a vast collection of educational films covering a wide range of

topics, making learning enjoyable and accessible. The platform's short-form

content is perfectly suited to the tastes of Generation Z, who frequently choose

microlearning over traditional techniques (Oxford Learning, 2022).Tiktok can also

inspire students by connecting the users with like-minded peers, fostering a

sense of community among users that can inspire students to engage more

deeply with their studies and follow their passion (The Leap, 2024).TikTok's

appeal is its ability to foster a sense of community. Users can find and

communicate with people who have similar interests in specialized hobbies,

vocations, or cultural backgrounds. A sense of belonging may be empowering

because it fosters a safe space in which people feel heard and seen. To enhance

the community experience, the platform's algorithm selects content that is

relevant to users' interests. Motivational video content has efficiently eradicated

stigma associated with mental health illnesses, provided practical answers, and

built a welcoming and empathetic environment. It has been beneficial in assisting

students with mental health concerns, delivering positive and remarkable

outcomes. The purpose of this mental health information system is to support

and uplift students who are facing difficulties, stated by Anugrah et al. (2024).

Consider tiktok to be a fun, engaging, motivating, and inspiring

instructional resource. TikTok was the best learning tool for the youngsters,

based on how it inspired students. Tiktok also influenced how students used

various tools and functionalities in a digital storytelling program. It demonstrated

that the pupils paid attentive attention to the learning [Link] and

Syafryadin (2024).
Anxious

According to Darmayanti et al., (2023) A person who feels they are

missing out on chances, experiences, or even exciting events that other TikTok

users are sharing can suffer from FOMO, which is a sense of worry, discomfort,

and restlessness. FoMO, or the fear of missing out on something that goes viral

on TikTok, is the feeling that one is "not updated" or left behind if they miss it or

experience it. Due to its limitless material, quick loading times, and ease of use,

TikTok plays a crucial role in fomenting FOMO because it can induce compulsive

scrolling (up, down, left, and right) in its users. They turn into addicts when they

lose control. Shared experiences might be consoling for certain users, but they

can also cause anxiety symptoms for others. It shows that teens frequently use

TikTok to manage their emotions, yet reading upsetting content can make them

anxious (National Library of Medicine, 2022).TikTok usage by students may

become compulsive, which can exacerbate stress and anxiety symptoms related

to social interactions and academic achievement. Because of a number of

interrelated issues, students frequently feel anxious when using or watching

TikTok. Moreover, According to Sedonasky (2024), Pupils' mental health may be

severely impacted by the mockery or severe criticism they receive for their work.

Students may become anxious and reluctant to use the platform because they

are afraid of receiving unfavorable comments.

Envy

TikTok is full of aspirational videos featuring beautiful lifestyles, physical

attractiveness, and accomplishments. This exposure might generate envy in

pupils who see themselves as deficient in [Link] per a study conducted

by the NCBI, individuals who scored higher on social comparison also exhibited

poorer happiness with their body image. Students who feel underrepresented on

TikTok may feel under pressure because a lot of the platform's users adhere to

particular beauty standards. Envy for people who seem to fit society's ideals of

beauty and a bad self-perception might result from this. This implies that

individuals who compare their lives to those of others on TikTok are more likely

to experience jealousy and dissatisfaction with their [Link] can be made

worse by placing too much significance on likes, shares, and followers.

According to Mekler (2021), Students may have self-esteem issues as a result of

being envious of classmates who receive more praise for their academic

achievements. Due to the competitive nature of social media sites such as

TikTok, students may develop a culture of comparison in which they measure

their accomplishments by comparing them to the fame of others.

According to the study, TikTok content had a mild effect on mental health.

The study's findings are fair, as the general population can no longer be

considered passive recipients of any message delivered through the media.

Audiences are now actively selecting content that suits their needs and interests.

TikTok, on the other hand, has emerged as a popular audiovisual platform

among Generation Z. (Astuti, 2024). It is clear that there is still a substantial

research need in this developing field for in-depth investigations. The modest

number of recognized studies indicates a need for more study and analysis.

Important topics including the long-term effects of watching mental health-related

content on TikTok, the platform's effect on how people perceive mental health

and its treatment, and the diversity of opinions among app users require further

investigation, As stated by Mustafa et al. (2024).

According to the study of Permana (2022), TikTok social media

influences changes in student character based on the intensity of time, tension,

attention, self-control, and anxiety that develop. Social media platforms like

TikTok appear to be an addiction for those who lack self-control, but when used

wisely, they may be educational resources. Examples of inspiration include

news, education, business, music and dancing, and the development of one's

own self-image and public speaking abilities.
