CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This chapter includes an exploration of the effectiveness of employing various
instructional materials to enhance the knowledge of Grade 10 students in their Grade
9 lessons at Aklan State University Laboratory High School. This first chapter of the
research is composed of the background of the study, statement problem/purpose of
the study, significance of the study, scope and delimitations, and the definition of
terms.
Background of the Study
In the realm of education, instructional materials serve as indispensable tools
in the Facilitation of teaching and learning processes. Defined as any resource utilized
to support instruction, ranging from textbooks and audiovisual aids to digital
simulations and interactive software, instructional materials play a pivotal role in
enhancing comprehension, engagement, and retention among learners. Through the
judicious selection and integration of these resources, educators can create dynamic
learning environments conducive to student success. Education generally is based on
the pursuit of two basic aspects: “what to teach and how to teach”, the latter is
basically the methodology while the former refers to the learning material. Therefore,
the quality of education depends on the quality, availability and use of learning
materials as well as the quality of teachers . According to global monitoring, all other
things being equal, the quality of teaching and learning is heavily determined by the
resources available and how they are managed (VISION 2050, 2015). The
significance of instructional materials in education stems from their ability to cater to
diverse learning styles and preferences, thereby fostering a more inclusive and
personalized approach to instruction. Research indicates that well-designed
instructional materials not only convey essential content but also stimulate critical
thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills development (Association for
Educational Communications and Technology, 2012). Several researches have
reported an alarming decline in Secondary School Students interest to pursue science,
and that is attributed to lack of practical work, lack of adequate teaching resources
(instructional materials), lack of qualified teachers, poor method of teaching and lack
of sufficient time for science subjects(Olatoye,2004).
The primary motivation is to enhance the quality of education by identifying
which instructional materials are most effective in facilitating learning outcomes. This
is crucial for educators and policymakers to make informed decisions about resource
allocation and curriculum development. Students have diverse learning styles,
preferences, and needs. Research in instructional materials helps in identifying
materials that cater to different learning modalities, ensuring inclusivity and equity in
education( Oyekanmi, J. O. 2019). With the advancement of technology, there's an
increasing need to understand how digital instructional materials impact learning
compared to traditional methods. Investigating this area helps in leveraging
technology effectively for educational purposes(Kame'enui, E. J., & Carnine, D. W.
1998). Johnson, J., and Wells, G. (2017). Resources for education are frequently
scarce, particularly in settings with little resources. Finding economical solutions that
optimize learning results without placing an excessive financial load on educational
institutions is the goal of research on instructional materials. Since the subject of
education is dynamic, it is imperative that it always improve. Teaching practices can
be continuously improved and innovative thanks to research on instructional
materials, which offers insights into what functions best in various
circumstances(Lord, S. M., & Baviskar, S. N. (2007).
Today advances in technology have made it possible to produce materials and
devices that could be used to minimize the teachers; talking and at the same time,
make the message clearer, more interesting and easier for the learner to assimilate
(Onasanya, et al. (2008). According to Soetan et al. (2010), graphics including charts,
posters, sketches, cartoons, graphs and drawings. Graphics communicate facts and
ideas clearly through combination of drawings, words and pictures. The use of
graphics in teaching creates definitiveness to the materials being studied. Moreover,
the effectiveness of instructional materials extends beyond mere content delivery;
they also serve as catalysts for active learning experiences that promote deeper
understanding and long-term retention of information. Studies have shown that
incorporating multimedia elements, such as videos, simulations, and interactive
exercises, into instructional materials can significantly enhance student engagement
and knowledge acquisition (Clark & Mayer, 2016).
Furthermore, instructional materials provide scaffolding and support for both
educators and learners, offering guidance, structure, and reinforcement throughout the
learning process. By aligning instructional materials with curriculum objectives and
educational standards, educators can optimize instructional delivery and ensure
coherence and continuity in learning experiences (Glatthorn, 2012). In examining the
impact of instructional materials on student learning outcomes, it becomes evident
that their effective utilization correlates positively with academic achievement and
performance. Meta-analytical studies have demonstrated that instructional materials
tailored to specific learning goals and objectives contribute to improved student
outcomes across various subject areas and grade levels (Hattie, 2009).
As we delve into the effectiveness of instructional materials in teaching and
learning, it is imperative to consider the interplay between pedagogy, technology, and
curriculum design in optimizing their utilization. By harnessing the affordances of
instructional materials and leveraging evidence-based practices, educators can
cultivate dynamic learning environments that empower students to thrive in an ever-
evolving educational landscape.
This is mainly for the purpose-effective instructional materials play a crucial role in
improving learning outcomes for students. Understanding how different materials
impact learning enables educators to design more effective instructional strategies,
fostering student engagement, comprehension, and retention. By identifying and
implementing evidence-based practices, educators can create learning environments
that maximize student success and academic achievement. By identifying gaps in
existing materials or areas where improvements are needed, researchers contribute to
the development of more relevant and engaging curriculum resources. This ensures
that educational materials align with educational objectives and standards, providing
students with meaningful learning experiences that prepare them for success in the
modern world.
As educators, we must recognize the transformative potential of instructional
materials in shaping the learning experiences of our students. By embracing
innovation and evidence-based practices, we can harness the power of instructional
materials to inspire curiosity, ignite passion, and cultivate lifelong
learners(Hattie ,2009).
