- Imagine this situation: When you were younger you had to
decide which career you would pursue. You end up deciding
on teaching English because you really liked it and it was
the only thing you were good at. 4 years later you find
yourself really enjoying what you do, and you can’t imagine
any other career that would be better for you. You say:
If I had chosen another career, I would have been
completely lost .

- Imagine this situation: You just finished an important exam,
but you didn’t answer one of the questions. In the middle of
the exam that question was really troubling you, you knew
that the teacher had talked about it during classes, but you
couldn’t remember it no matter how hard you tried. You
say:
If I had paid more attention, I would’ve known the answer.
- Imagine this situation: 1 year ago you broke up with your
fiancé 3 months before your wedding. You had been with
him for 2 years, but you were having doubts. After thinking
about it carefully, you decided that breaking up was the
best option. When you talked to him about it, he went mad
and started to get aggressive. He didn’t hit you, but you
were really scared. Now you are really happy without him.
You say:
If I had married him, I would have been in danger.
Note that all situations talk about something in the
past, it cannot be changed and the result is only
hypothetical. It’s not always something bad,
something that you wish it could be different
(although it’s really common to use 3r conditional to
talk about regrets). The main point is to imagine
possible outcomes to that situation (even though it is
something you cannot change)
Structure
If + Past perfect + Complement Would + have + past participle + complement
If she hadn’t practiced a lot, she wouldn’t have won the contest
Examples
- I would have believed you if you hadn't lied to me before.
- If I hadn't eaten so much, I wouldn't have felt sick.
- She wouldn't have been tired if she had gone to bed earlier
- If they had gone to university, they would’ve become teachers.
- You wouldn’t have had an accident if you had been more careful.
- If he had asked for help, I would have helped him.
- We would’ve died if the ambulance hadn’t arrived quickly.
- I would have believed you if you hadn't lied to me before.
(But you did lie in the past so I didn’t believe you)
- If I hadn't eaten so much, I wouldn't have felt sick.
(But I ate too much and I felt sick)
- She wouldn't have been tired if she had gone to bed earlier
(But she didn’t go to bed early so she was tired)
- If they had gone to university, they would’ve become
teachers.
(But they didn’t go to uni, so they didn’t become teachers)
- You wouldn’t have had an accident if you had been more careful.
(But you weren’t careful so you you had an accident)
- If he had asked for help, I would have helped him.
(But he did not ask for help so I didn’t help him)
- We would’ve died if the ambulance hadn’t arrived quickly.
(But the ambulance arrived quickly so we didn’t die)
