A Wrinkle in Time
TEACHER TIPS
Thank You!
Thank you so much for purchasing my novel unit for A Wrinkle in Time! This is one of my favorite books to
teach in my fifth grade classroom and my students get so into it. Their passion for reading this novel is
so exciting.
I have included a LOT of information and activities in this unit. Please, please look through the entirety
of the unit and decide which parts would work best for your class. I do NOT recommend using it all, as
that would overwhelm your students and take away from the novel.
I made sure to include teacher notes for every section to help you best utilize this product. Here is an
overview of each section of this unit:
Chapter Notes
This section is for YOU! This novel is chock-full of information. I created notes for every chapter for
you to reference as you go through the novel with your students.
Meg’s Journal
Looking for an alternative to chapter questions? Have your students write a journal for Meg! After
students read a chapter, have them write a journal entry describing the events that occurred. This will
allow you to assess what students have learned in the chapter in a more open-ended manner. I have
included a writing rubric for you to take a grade on each chapter’s entry (or journal as a whole), if you
choose.
Graphic Organizers
These visual displays help students organize ideas and show the relationship between concepts and
information. I have provided answer keys for some of the organizers for your convenience.
Projects
This section offers additional activities that you do with your students as you read the novel. Again, it’s
a lot of resources, so pick and choose which ones will work best for your class.
Enjoy!
CURRICULUM MAP
This is a suggested 4-week plan for students to study Madeline L’Engle’s novel, A Wrinkle in
Time. As with all teaching resources, this plan is for your reference and to give you
ideas. You should adjust it according to your classroom’s needs.
Read ch. 12

MRS. WHATSIT
chapter 1
1. Describe Meg.
Meg is an awkward teenager. She is angry, impatient and stubborn. Meg sees herself as
plain and lacks confidence in herself. She is smart, but struggles in school.
4. How does Mrs. Murry treat Mrs. Whatsit? What does that say about Mrs. Murry?
Mrs. Murry invites the stranger into her house, gives her food and offers her a place to stay
for the night. This shows that Mrs. Murry is a trusting, caring woman.
MRS. WHO
chapter 2
2. What do you think Charles Wallace means when he says “one of us”?
Answers will vary.
3. Based on Meg’s behavior, how do you think she feels about her dad being gone?
Meg misses her father greatly and doesn’t know how to control her feelings about the
situation. She often acts out and misbehaves when she is upset, especially when others
bring up his absence.
4. Are the children safe at the haunted house? Use a quote from the book to explain.
The children are safe at the haunted house. Charles points out “But you saw Fort, didn’t
you? Not a growl. Not a quiver. Just as though there weren’t anything strange about it.”
If there were danger, their dog would have warned them.
5. Compare how the kids’ feelings in the garden with how they feel when seeing the
dark Thing.
On Uriel, the children encounter both good and evil. Flying over the beautiful garden, they
experience joy and bliss. The dark Thing, on the other hand, brings about feelings of dread
and fear.
3. Mrs. Which says, “There will no longer be so many pleasant things to look at if
responsible people do not do something about the unpleasant ones.” What does
she mean?
Mrs. Which means that the good people need to fight the negative things in order to keep
everything in balance.
4. Why were the kids shown the dark Thing on Uriel first?
The kids were shown the dark Thing on Uriel first because it was easier to see and also
because it was less frightening when it wasn’t on their own planet.
2. Describe Camazotz.
Camazotz appears very similar to Earth, except everything is identical. Every house is the
exact same size, shape and color.
3. What is different about the people of Camazotz? Why do you think they are this
way?
The people of Camazotz are odd because they all move at the same time and to the same
rhythm. They appear to talk as though their words are not their own and as though they
are controlled by something else.
5. Do you think the kids should go into the CENTRAL Central Intelligence building? Why
or why not?
Answers will vary.
2. Do you think it is better for a community if a single person assumes all the pain and
responsibility?
Answers will vary.
3. Why doesn’t Meg want Charles Wallace to open his mind to the man?
Meg doesn’t want Charles to be hypnotized by the man because she fears that he won’t be
able to get back out. The man with the red eyes is stronger than him and Mrs. Whatsit
warned Charles that he would be the most vulnerable.
5. What are the pros and cons of a planet operating one one mind? Fill out the chart.
Pros Cons
3. Explain the quote, “like and equal are two entirely different things.”
Answers will vary.
ABOSLUTE ZERO
chapter 10
2. Do you think tessering was the right thing to do? Why or why not?
Answers will vary.
5. Where do you think the beasts are taking Meg? Should they be trusted?
Answers will vary.
2. What does Meg mean – “it was she who was limited by her senses.”
Meg realizes that she is limited by her own sense of sight, for the beasts have other
senses beyond that which allow them to experience even more.
3. Meg blames her father. Is it his fault? Did he do the wrong thing?
Answers will vary.
4. Why do Meg and Calvin have such a hard time communicating with the beasts?
Meg and Calvin struggle to communicate with the beasts because they are limited by
their visual descriptions, which is difficult for the blind beasts to comprehend.
5. Do you think the Mrs. W’s will be able to help them? How?
Answers will vary.
1. Why is Meg the only one who can save Charles Wallace?
Meg realizes that she is the only one who can save Charles Wallace because she knows and
loves him best.
3. Why would Mother want Meg to save Charles Wallace, even though it is dangerous?
Meg knows that her mother would want her to be brave and save Charles Wallace because
she is always pushing her out of her comfort zone.

Vocabulary Definitions
I chose 5 vocabulary words from each chapter that I felt were challenging for my fifth graders.
The words I chose are also crucial to the understanding of the story. I require students to list the
page number that the vocabulary word is found on (they are written in chronological order) as well
as the definition of the word, based on the context of the novel.
The vocabulary definition pages can be copied to the back of their corresponding question page for
students to have all the information in one place.
Vocabulary Sentences
I also have students come up with their own sentence for each vocabulary word. I provided a blank
vocabulary sentence page for you. If you choose to do this, I would copy the definition page and
the sentence page back to back.
Answer Key
For your convenience, I have included an answer key. The definitions in the answer key come from
Learner’s Dictionary (a great online dictionary for students!). I used the definition that best fits the
context of the word in the book. I listed 2 definitions for a few words since they have multiple
meanings in the novel.
In the answer key, I did not provide the page number that each word can be found on because
there are discrepancies in page numbers between the different editions of the novel. I found this
out the hard way!

TEACHER NOTES
Looking for an alternative to chapter questions? Have your students write a journal
for Meg!
After students read a chapter, have them write a journal entry describing the events
that occurred in that chapter. Instead of writing the date at the top of the page,
they will write the chapter number. I have included an example diary entry for you.
This will allow you to assess what students have learned in the chapter in a more open-
ended manner. I have included a writing rubric for you to take a grade on each
student’s entry (or journal as a whole), if you choose.
You could create a full journal ahead of time for each student by binding or stapling
the pages. Or you could give them one sheet at a time and pull them all together at
the end of the book. Alternately, you could just have students write Meg’s journal in
their own spiral notebook or composition book.

TEACHER NOTES
Pre-Reading Jots
Before opening the novel, have students take some time to think about what the story will be about.
I have included a page for students to write down their thoughts, as well as cards for you to use
as a class or group discussion.
Chapter Notes
The blank chapter notes pages can be used for students to jot down notes as you read the novel. I
recommend having students fill this out on their own as you discuss the chapters as a class. You
could use the teacher’s notes pages as a reference, but I wouldn’t use that as the only notes for
your students. They will be able to come up with so much information on their own!
Profile Pages
If you are looking for more room for students to track each character, they could fill out profile
pages for each character instead. I have included a full page or a half page, depending on which
you would like to use.
Graphic Organizers
As you finish the novel, students will use these sheets to share their knowledge of theme and
character change. There are two different versions of the character change page, allowing you to
differentiate. Students can complete these independently, with a partner/group or as a class.
Take a look at the novel, A Wrinkle in Time. Before reading, jot down some
thoughts below about what you think might happen in the story.

TEACHER NOTES
Important!
By request, I have included answer keys for some of the graphic organizers. However, these don’t
include all the correct answers. A lot of this novel is open to interpretation, so your students will
come up with more of their own thoughts and ideas! Please use these answer keys as just a
starting point. I know that they will have more to add!

TEACHER NOTES
Journey Through the Galaxy
Students will create a map of each character’s journey through the galaxy of the novel. They will
draw each planet, based on descriptions from the book (which they will include in the project).
Students will draw colored lines to represent each character’s path through the universe.
You can have students use the map template that I have created or they could get more creative
by starting with a large, blank piece of paper. I have included a rubric for you, if you choose to
grade your students’ understanding of the novel.
3. A map key that shows the colors you used for each character.
4. Five quotes from the novel – one for each planet that describes its characteristics (this
can be placed on the front or back of the map).
