Pre-Racking Checklist for Circuit Breaker
1. Obtain Authorization & Documentation
☐ Obtain a valid work permit (if required).
☐ Verify the switching procedure and isolation plan.
☐ Inform the control room or relevant personnel.
2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
☐ Wear appropriate PPE (arc flash suit, gloves, face shield, safety shoes, etc.).
☐ Use insulated tools if necessary.
3. Load & System Verification
☐ Confirm the circuit breaker is not under load.
☐ Verify with control room that the breaker is safe to rack out.
☐ Check for any abnormal conditions (heat, noise, burning smell).
4. Isolation & Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
☐ Open the circuit breaker using the control switch.
☐ Verify the breaker status indicator shows OPEN.
☐ Engage the trip-free mechanism (if applicable).
☐ Apply the lockout/tagout (LOTO) device per procedures.
5. Voltage Verification
☐ Use an appropriate voltage tester to verify de-energization.
☐ Check for residual voltage on the load side.
6. Grounding (If Required)
☐ Connect temporary grounding if specified by procedure.
7. Mechanical Checks
☐ Inspect for any visible damage or signs of failure.
☐ Ensure the breaker is in the DISCONNECTED position before racking out.
8. Racking Out Process
☐ Follow the manufacturer’s racking procedure.
☐ Use an insulated racking handle if applicable.
☐ Rack out slowly and steadily to avoid damage.
☐ Ensure the breaker is fully disengaged from the bus.
9. Final Verification
☐ Confirm the breaker is in the TEST or REMOVED position.
☐ Place the breaker in a safe storage location.
☐ Document the process and inform relevant personnel.
