HYDRA ALERT
11-POPE GREGORY
I. objectives (what specific questions were addressed?)
II. Significance
The Hydro Alert system specifically offers significant
benefits to others, particularly in flood-prone
communities, by providing a simple, eco-friendly, and
affordable solution to help mitigate the impacts of
flooding. This project can greatly benefit individuals,
families, and entire communities in the following ways:
Early Flood Warning. The system can detect rising
water levels and trigger alerts, providing important early
warning and allowing the community to take action
before the flood level becomes too high and hazardous.
This can reduce injuries, prevent damage to properties,
and save lives.
Cost-Effective Solution. The system uses low-cost,
recycled materials, making it affordable for individuals
or communities with limited resources. This ensures that
even those in economically disadvantaged areas can
access and implement the technology to protect
themselves from flood-related risks.
Flood alarms are important because they help keep
people safe by warning them early when floods are about
to happen. These warnings give families enough time to
leave their homes and move to safer places, reducing the
risk of getting hurt. With the early alert, people can also
protect their belongings, such as important documents,
furniture, and electrical items, by moving them to higher
places or safe areas. This helps reduce damage and loss.
Flood alarms also help emergency teams act quickly and
organize rescue efforts better, which makes it easier to
save lives and help people in need. They are especially
helpful for vulnerable groups, like the elderly, children,
and people with disabilities, who may need more time
and assistance to prepare or evacuate.
III. Methodology
To create a low-cost flood alarm system, a selection of
affordable, easily accessible materials was used,
including recycled Tupperware, cardboard boxes, a 9V
battery, bolts, wire, a buzzer, a pen or stick, a glue gun
with glue sticks, a hose, and a funnel. Recycled
Tupperware was chosen as the base for the system due
to its durability and water-resistant properties, ensuring
that it could withstand any water exposure during
testing. The cardboard box provided a lightweight, cost-
effective enclosure for the system, protecting the internal
components and making the system portable. Bolts were
selected for their ability to conduct electricity when
water bridges the gap between them, which is crucial for
triggering the alarm when water makes contact. The
buzzer was used as the primary alert mechanism
because it’s an inexpensive and effective way to produce
a loud sound when the alarm is activated. A pen/stick
was used as a support structure for the buzzer, ensuring
it was securely positioned in place. The 9V battery was
chosen because it provides sufficient power for the
system while being easily available and affordable. Wire
was selected to make the necessary electrical
connections between the buzzer, bolts, and battery,
completing the circuit. A hose and funnel were used to
simulate floodwater, directing the water to the bolts,
where it completes the circuit and activates the buzzer. A
glue gun and glue sticks were used throughout the
process to secure the components, as they provide a
strong, quick bond without adding significant cost.
Finally, the cardboard box was decorated to represent a
flood scenario. This selection of materials was chosen for
its affordability, ease of access, and ability to effectively
create a functional and low-cost flood detection system.
IV. Results and discussion
The Hydro Alert flood alarm effectively detects rising
water levels and promptly activates an audible buzzer
upon contact. During testing, the system consistently
responded when water bridged the bolts, completing the
circuit and triggering the alarm. This confirms the
device’s reliability in identifying flooding situations.
Additionally, the use of a 9V battery ensures that the
alarm remains functional during power outages, which
frequently occur in flood-prone areas.
A notable advantage of the system lies in its cost-
effectiveness. Using affordable and recycled materials
made the alarm accessible without compromising its
function. The Tupperware and cardboard casing
effectively housed the circuitry, allowing it to function as
intended without interference. Beyond its core function,
the alarm provides an early warning mechanism,
allowing residents to take necessary precautions before
floodwaters rise to dangerous levels. This aligns with the
project’s goal of enhancing disaster preparedness
through a simple yet highly functional tool. The system’s
instant response capability ensures that users are alerted
at the earliest possible stage, minimizing risks associated
with sudden flooding.
Further refinements, such as expanding the detection
range and integrating additional alert mechanisms, could
enhance its application in various environments. The
project shows that even with basic electronic
components, a reliable and impactful flood warning
system can be developed, offering a practical solution for
flood mitigation efforts.
V. Conclusion
The Hydro Alert flood alarm effectively
demonstrates the effectiveness of low-cost materials in
creating a functional early warning mechanism that
allows the residents to make an instant response, which
ensures that users are alerted at the earliest possible
stage, and its ability to function during power outages,
making it a budget-friendly solution for mitigating flood
risks.
VI. Recommendations
These enhancements can be applied to real-world
scenarios. Expanding sensor networks would provide
more accurate and detailed flood monitoring, allowing
coverage of a wider area. This would make flood
detection more efficient and reliable. One key application
is flood alarms for river monitoring. Sensors can be
installed near or along rivers to track water levels and
alert nearby communities about potential flooding.
Another important area is urban flood management.
Flood monitoring systems in cities can alert residents
and authorities in advance, helping to minimize damage
to infrastructure and properties. Lastly, in the
Philippines, where agriculture is a major industry,
agricultural flood management can be implemented in
farmlands, especially in provinces. These systems can be
used in rice fields and other harvest areas to prevent
crop damage due to flooding. To prevent system
malfunctions, regular maintenance is essential to ensure
accuracy and reliability. Additionally, sensor calibration
is necessary to avoid false alarms.
